Guard who accompanies Poppy to the capital and is killed during a Craven attack in the Blood Forest.

The last bonded wolven to King Malec. He broke his bond to tell Queen Eloana about Malec creating the first vampry. He is close to the Royal family and loyal to the King and Queen. His daughter Shea was killed trying to rescue her fiance Casteel from the Ascended. He suggested that Cas marry his niece Gianna to help mend the rift between the Ascended and the wolven populations. He was not present for the fight in New Haven, arriving just at the tail end, or the fight at Spessa's End, he was sent to get reinforcements with Kieran. However, he did not return with Kieran to fight, instead traveling alone to inform the King and Queen of Casteel's marriage plans. 

Young wolven and nephew to Alastir. 

He is badly injured while playing near one of the house constructions in Spessa's End and likely would have lost his legs if Poppy had not been able to help him shift from wolven to mortal form. Instead of just taking his pain from him, she healed his legs completely. Instead of making him like Poppy, it scared Beckett. He traveled with Poppy and Casteel to Saion's Cove, going over the Skotos Mountains with Naill and Delano. Once in Saion's Cove, he offered to give Poppy a tour of the Chambers of Nyktos and walked her into a trap instead. 

Maid in Castle Teerman, who is a huge gossip and whose cloak Poppy "borrows" to go to the Red Pearl. 

Guard who accompanies Poppy to the capital and is alerted that something is not right while in New Haven. Tries to get Poppy out of the city but is killed.

Mother of Poppy and Ian Balfour. Wife of Leopold Balfour, often called Cora by him. Killed in a Craven attack when Poppy was a child as they tried to leave the capital. Duchess Teerman tells Poppy that she was the Queen's daughter, which doesn't makes sense because the Ascended cannot have children.

Wolven in New Haven who fights with Poppy against Jericho. He helps guard Poppy in New Haven and is one of Casteel's preferred soldiers. He fights the Ascended that come to New Haven, travel with Poppy and Cas to Spessa's End, and discoveres when the Ascended march toward Spessa's End - getting gravely injured but being healed by Poppy. He fights against the Ascended in Spessa's End and travels with Poppy and Cas toward Saion's Cove, traveling over the Skotos Mountains with Naill and Beckett. He is one of the wolven Poppy is closest to.

Duchess of Masadonia who is guardian to Poppy. She eventually reveals that she knew the truth of Duke Dorian's behavior and did nothing to stop it. She arrives in Spessa's End with an army to try to get Poppy back. She reveals that Poppy is Queen Iliana's granddaughter, which would mean that the Queen is not an Ascended as they cannot have children. Poppy kills her in the battle at Spessa's End.

Duke of Masadonia who is the guardian of Poppy before she returns to the capital and becomes one of the Ascended. He delights in finding reasons to punish Poppy, whipping her with a cane over the smallest infractions. Is found at the most recent Rite dead and pinned to the wall with his own cane.

Mortal in charge of the Descenter's at New Haven. He becomes quite fond of Poppy while she's at New Haven. When Poppy and Casteel leave for Spessa's End, he stays to make sure the rest of the people follow them in the next few days, including those that are injured. He is captured by the Ascended with the rest of New Haven and killed. Their severed heads are catapulted onto the Rise of Spessa's End to taunt Casteel and Poppy.

Atlantian who is often traveling with Alastir. He is considered a good and loyal man by both Casteel and Kieran, though Casteel believes he has a crush on Poppy. He fights against the Ascended at Spessa's End before traveling with Poppy and Casteel over the Skotos Mountains. He goes over the mountain with Jasper and Quentyn.

Wolven. Niece of Alastir. Cousin to Beckett. 

Alastir suggests that Casteel marry Gianna to help mend the rift between the Atlantians and the wolven. It was expected that they would marry when Casteel returned to Atlantia, though Casteel never agreed to the match. 

Poppy's brother, who was allowed to Ascend due to his relation to the Maiden, although he should have become a lord-in-wait. Married to Claudeya.

Poppy agrees to marry Cas originally so they can find and potentially rescue Ian as well as Malik. She does not believe he is like the other Ascended, if he is Ascended at all. Duchess Teerman tells Poppy before she dies that Ian is with Malik. 

The first vampry. After she was mortally wounded, her lover King Malec drained her blood and allowed her to drink his own, making her into the first vampry, also known as an Ascended. 

Husband of Kirha. Father of Kieran and Vonetta (among others). Expecting another child soon. Speaks on behalf of all the wolven to the King and Queen of Atlantia. 

He arrives in Spessa's End and marries Poppy and Casteel. He does not believe that Poppy is an empath, saying that she has an ancient smell. He fights against the Ascended army at Spessa's End and later travels with Casteel and Poppy to Saion's Cove. He travels over the Skotos Mountains with Emil and Quentyn. He heard Poppy's call to the wolven when she was in danger at Spessa's End. He is one of the first wolven to enter the Chambers of Nyktos to find Poppy.

Wolven who attacked Poppy and Rylan in the gardens, killing Rylan and allowing Casteel to become her new guard. Tries to kill Poppy while in New Haven but is stopped by Kieran and later pinned to the wall and allowed to die slowly as a warning to others who may want to threaten Poppy. They don't force him to suffer long and kill him instead.

Wolven bonded to Casteel since birth, who pretends to be a guard to help accompany Hawke/Casteel and Poppy to the capital, helping Casteel to kidnap Poppy. Son of Jasper and Kirha, brother of Vonetta (among others). He becomes a friend of Poppy as he spends time with her both in New Haven and Spessa's End, always traveling with her and Cas. He fights whenever Cas fights but when Spessa's End is attacked, Cas sends him across the Skotos Mountains to get reinforcements with Alastir, also ensuring that Kieran will have the greatest chance of staying safe. He returns with an army of their own just after the majority of the Ascended army arrives and turns the fight in their favor. He heard Poppy calling the wolven to her and followed her call - leading them straight to her. He traveled over the Skotos Mountains with Poppy and Cas and when Poppy is attacked in the Chambers of Nyktos, he is one of the first to arrive inside.

King of Atlantia when the vamprys were created. Was married to Eloana but fell in love with Isbeth. When Isbeth was mortally wounded, he performed a forbidden act and drained Isbeth before allowing her to drink his blood - making her the first vampry, also known as the Ascended. Some believe that he and Isbeth were heartmates, leading to his unwillingness to allow her death.

King of Atlantia. Second husband of Queen Eloana and father to Malik and Casteel. He no longer believes Malik is able to be saved and wants retribution against the Ascended. He is prepared to use Poppy to get it if necessary. He championed Casteel's marriage to Gianna although Cas never agreed to the match. 

Wolven at New Haven who tells Casteel that the Atlantians will not accept Poppy. He threatens and insults Poppy, leading to Cas ripping his heart out.

Father of Poppy and Ian Balfour. Husband of Coralena Balfour, often called Leo or Lion by her. Killed in a Craven attack when Poppy was a child as they tried to leave the capital. Poppy remembers that he met someone the night of the attack and was acting nervous.

Ascended sent to find Poppy after she was kidnapped. He arrives in New Haven looking for her, attacking the town with the royal knights and kidnapping Poppy. He was gravely injured in the attack and bite Poppy after kidnapping her. Poppy was able to fight him off and he was taken captive when Cas rescued her. Poppy later killed him.

Ascended in Masadonia who was a friend of Duke Teerman and often participated in Poppy's punishments. After Viktor was killed, Poppy single handedly killed Mazeen.

She is captured by the Ascended with the rest of New Haven and killed. Their severed heads are catapulted onto the Rise of Spessa's End to taunt Casteel and Poppy.

Mortal man who lost his first two sons. When his third son was born, he and his wife were told they should not have any more children. Petitioned the Duke and Duchess of Masadonia to be allowed to keep the child instead of dedicating him to the priests during the Rite but was denied. Did not attend the Rite and later was discovered with the Descenters. Struck the killing blow on Poppy during the fight at New Haven and was later killed for it.

Mortal whose husband joined the Descenters after they petitioned the Duke and Duchess Teerman to allow them to keep their infant son and was denied. They escaped with their son. Mr. Tulis later tried to kill Poppy with Jericho. She left New Haven with her infant son after her husband was killed for trying to kill Poppy. She was caught by Lord Chaney and her son killed. She revealed that the Maiden was at New Haven, leading to Lord Chaney attacked the town and killing Mrs. Tulis.

Fought with Poppy against Jericho at New Haven. He is one of Casteel's preferred soldiers and becomes close to Poppy during their stay in New Haven and Spessa's End. He fights against the Ascended both in New Haven and Spessa's End, traveling with Casteel and Poppy to Saion's Cove - traveling over the Skotos Mountain with Delano and Beckett. 

Previously the Maiden, supposedly chosen by the gods themselves. As the Maiden, was not allowed to socialize with anyone or have her face seen lest she be deemed unworthy by the gods. Wife of Prince Casteel Da'Neer.

The Dark One seems to want to kidnap her so she is called back to the capital by the queen, likely to move up the date of her Ascension. However, on the way she is taken by Atlantians and told the truth of Solis and Atlantia. Was attacked in New Haven and dealt a lethal blow, but Casteel allowed her to drink his blood to save her life. The original plan was to trade her to the Ascended for Prince Malik, but Prince Casteel decides to take her to Atlantia and marry her instead, after realizing that she is part Atlantian. 

She stays at New Haven for awhile, becoming close to some of the people there but recognizing that others do not like her. She agrees while there to marry Casteel to use their marriage as leverage to rescue both of their brothers and potentially bring down the Ascended while avoiding a war. She travels to Spessa's End and realizes that her gift allows her to heal others, she heals Beckett's broken legs, preventing the need to amputate them. She is kidnapped by Lord Chaney, who bites her, and later kills him after being rescued by Cas. A full-grown blood tree sprouts where she was attacked by him in the courtyard. She fights with the Ascended at Spessa's End, threatening to kill herself to protect herself and Cas from the Ascended army. In doing so, she unwittingly calls the wolven to her. She marries Cas in a ceremony officiated by Jasper, their marriage is blessed by Nyktos when the sky goes black. She travels over the Skotos Mountains to Saion's Cove with Casteel and Kieran, nearly walking off a cliff when taken by the mist but being saved by the goddess Aios. When she arrives in Saion's Cove, she is walked into a trap in the Chambers of Nyktos by Beckett. She kills her attackers, bleeding on the floor and causing another blood tree to grow. When Queen Eloana comes in, she demands everyone to bow to Poppy - their new queen and descendant of Nyktos.

Priestess who taught Poppy in Masadonia and often tattled on her to the duke, though she knew that he would punish Poppy. 

The Dark One, leader of the Descenters. Brother to Prince Malik. Husband of Poppy.

Comes to Masadonia and calls himself Hawke Flynn, setting himself up as a guard and eventually becoming Poppy's guard. They become close and he kidnaps her on the way to the capital with the intention of trading her for Prince Malik, but instead decides to bring her to Atlantia and marry her. When Poppy was dealt a lethal blow when attacked, he did a forbidden act and allowed her to drink from him, which saved her life. 

He proposes to Poppy, believing that their marriage could allow them to rescue both their brothers and take down the Ascended while avoiding another war. He fights the Ascended in New Haven, rescuing Poppy when she is taken by Lord Chaney. They travel to Spessa's End together, and marries Poppy while there in a ceremony blessed by Nyktos. He fights against the Ascended, trying to get Poppy to safety when the larger army arrives but being saved by the wolven and Atlantian reinforcements that are brought by Kieran. He travels through the Skotos Mountains with Poppy and Kieran, saving Poppy from walking off a cliff, before arriving in Saion's Cove. The first person to kneel to Poppy when her lineage is discovered. He admits to Poppy that he killed his previous fiancee, Shea, after she rescued him from the Ascended because she had traded Malik's freedom for her own and later tried to do the same with Cas. 

Prince of Atlantia who rescued Prince Casteel when he was held hostage by the Ascended and fed from to create new Ascended. Currently held hostage himself. Duchess Teerman reveals to Poppy that he is still alive. Cas and Poppy agree to marry in part to rescue both of their brothers. 

Queen of Atlantia when the vamprys were first created, wife of Malec. When she realizes what Poppy is in Saion's Cove, she tells everyone to kneel to their new queen.

Queen of Solis. Everyone is told that she is Ascended, but Duchess Teerman makes it seem like she is not. Supposedly the grandmother of Poppy, her mother's mother. 

Young Atlantian who just went through the Culling. He is at Spessa's End when Casteel and Poppy arrive. During the battle with the Ascended at Spessa's End, Quentyn fought next to Poppy on the Rise, protecting her from the arrows with a shield while she shot her bow, and covering her with his own bow as she fought her way to the courtyard. He is a very good shot. He traveled with Poppy and Casteel to Saion's Cove, going over the Skotos Mountains with Jasper and Emil.

A child that lived in New Haven. He was taken hostage by Lord Chaney and Poppy traded herself to save the boy. After Poppy lowered her dagger and was knocked out, Chaney killed Renfern anyway.

One of Poppy's guards who was killed during a night walk in the Queen's Gardens in Masadonia by Jericho, allowing Hawke to become her new guard.

Close friend of Malik and Cas who became more to Cas, they were to be married. She tried to rescue Cas several times with Malik after Cas was captured by the Ascended. During one rescue attempt, she was cornered by Ascended and traded her freedom for Malik's, the Ascended were expecting them when they arrived to save Cas and Malik was captured while Shea pulled Cas to safety. They were cornered again and Shea tried to trade Cas for her own freedom this time. Realizing what she had done, Cas killed her and the Ascended that had caught them. He does not like to talk to her because he used to love her, and now he hates her. He has told no one the truth of what happened to Shea except Kieran and Poppy.

Lady-in-waiting that was given to Poppy as a companion while she was in Castle Teerman. They became quite close but Tawny decided to stay in Masadonia when Poppy was called back to the capital. She is excited to Ascend.

Duchess Teerman tells Poppy that they petitioned the gods to allow Poppy to Ascend early and the petition was granted. It is unclear if she has already Ascended or preparing to Ascend. 

Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Tulis. They petitioned Duke and Duchess Teerman to be able to keep him instead of giving him in the Rite. When their petition was denied, they disappeared with him. It is not seen, but he was probably killed by Lord Chaney.

Guard of Poppy, who he is very close to and has more of a father/daughter relationship with. Died protecting Poppy during the Descendent's attack on Castle Teerman.

Wolven. Daughter and youngest child of Jasper and Kirha Contou (for now). Sister of Kieran. She is a Rise guard at Spessa's End. She and Poppy hit it off right away and she helps Poppy dress for her wedding, attending the wedding as her guest. She fights against the Ascended at Spessa's End, getting saved by Poppy and saving her life in turn. She does not travel with Poppy and Casteel to Saion's Cove, but tells them she will be there soon anyway to see her mother before the imminent birth of her next sibling.
