Parabatai and foster brother to Jace. Brother to Isabelle and Max. Eldest child of Robert and Maryse.
Considered the member of their group that prefers to fight from afar and not wade directly and recklessly into the fray. Very good with a bow and arrows but has never killed a demon, a point of contention for him when it is brought up. He is gay but not out, especially as it would not be accepted by the greater Shadowhunter community. Believes he is in love with Jace but the feeling is unrequited, Jace considers him a brother. Is badly injured while fighting a Greater Demon at Madam Dorothea's home, Magnus Bane arrives to help purge his body of the poison and wake Alec up.
Alec accompanies Isabelle and Clary to the Shadow City when the Silent Brothers send out a request for help, discovering that Valentine has stolen the Sword and killed the Brothers and breaking Jace out of his cell. When the Seelie Queen requests an audience, Alec willingly takes Jace's place in Magnus Bane's care so Jace can meet the Queen. He and Magnus bring blood for Simon when he is turned into a vampire and come to heal Luke when he and Maia are attacked by demons. He pretends to turn against Jace when the Inquisitor accuses him of visiting his father, so that he could later help Jace without being closely watched. He convinces Jace to break out of the Malachi Configuration and helps break his shackles. When Jace heads to Valentine's ship, Alec texts Magnus to meet Jace and stays at the Institute so he can tell the Inquisitor where Jace is once her planned trade with Valentine falls through. He fights with the Shadowhunters on Valentine's ship, almost drowning, but is saved by Magnus. When Magnus' power is depleted, he willingly gives Magnus some of his strength. He is almost definitely dating Magnus but has not had the courage to tell anyone.

Daughter of Jocelyn Fray (previously Fairchild) and Valentine Morgenstern. Sister of Jace. Best friend of Simon.
Was raised by her mother alone, believing her father Jonathan Clark had died in a car accident, with no knowledge of her Shadowhunter heritage. Only after a chance meeting with Jace, Alec, and Isabelle and Jocelyn's kidnapping does she find out the truth and that Jocelyn has blocked many of her memories. In trying to find her mother, she discovers the truth of Jocelyn's past, meets Magnus Bane and discovers the existence of the Shadow World, fights a vampire coven trying to save Simon, discovers that her father figure is actually a werewolf, and recovers the Mortal Cup from where her mother had hidden it. To get the Mortal Cup, she had to use a rune that allowed her to pull the Cup out of a painting her mother had done. Finds out that Jace is actually her brother who everyone thought was dead.
Visits the Seelie Queen with Jace, Isabelle, and Simon, where she accidently ingests Faerie drink and cannot leave the Court. In order to free her, the Seelie Queen forces her to have the kiss she most highly desires - with her brother Jace. She also finds out in the Court that Valentine experimented with his children giving them both extra gifts. This causes Simon to freak out and storm off. When Jace is imprisoned in the Silent City, she accompanies Alec and Isabelle to answer a distress call. She uses an Unlock rune on the door and blows the door of its hinges. In a dream, her mother draws a protection rune on her arm that is still there when she wakes up and no one else recognizes. She believes that she can create new runes, something that no one has ever done, and creates a Fearless rune that almost causes Alec to come out to his parents. She and Luke accompany Jace to fight Valentine on his ship. Valentine's demons abduct her and Clary is able to help Maia escape into the ship before being grabbed by Valentine. She later uses a rune on the ship that makes it come apart at the seams, stopping the fight but also allowing Valentine to escape with the Sword. She is broken up with by Simon and then approached by Madeleine, who knows how to wake Clary's mom.

Son of Valentine Morgenstern and Jocelyn Fray, previously Jocelyn Fairchild. Raised to believe he was the son of the late Michael Wayland. Raised by Michael's parabatai Robert Lightwood and his wife Maryse at the New York Institute. Foster brother to Alec, Isabelle, and Max Lightwood. Parabatai to Alec. Might be in love with Clary, who he just found out is his younger sister.
One of the best Shadowhunters of his generation and has killed the most demons of anyone his age, he tends to seek out dangerous situations. Sarcastic and loud, not always well liked by others. His mother died when Jace was born. His father Michael was killed while Jace hid, but he saw the whole thing. He helps Clary to save Simon from a vampire coven and introduces Clary to the Shadow World, introducing her to the warlock who blocked her memories, Magnus Bane. He goes with Clary to retrieve the Mortal Cup from Madam Dorothea's, fighting a Greater Demon in the process and watching Alec nearly die. When Hodge trades the Mortal Cup with Valentine, Valentine also takes Jace from the Institute. It is later revealed that Jace's father was not Michael Wayland, that was a fake persona that he adopted after the real Michael Wayland died. His father was really Valentine Morgenstern who had faked his own death, meaning that Jocelyn is Jace's mother and Jace is Clary's older brother. Saves Luke's life when Valentine nearly kills him. Jace tries to get Valentine to give him the Mortal Cup but ultimately stays in New York instead of joining his father in Idris.
Goes to see the Seelie Queen and is told that his father experimented on him and Clary, giving them special gifts. His is heightened physical abilites. The Seelie Queen also forces him to kiss Clary for Clary to leave the Court. Jace is kicked out of the Institute just for being Valentine's son when Maryse returns from Idris, and later blamed and imprisoned in the Silent City by the Inquisitor. He is in a cell when Valentine steals the Soul-Sword and murders the Silent Brothers. He is then put under house arrest and in the care of Magnus Bane. He and Magnus go to Luke's when Luke and Maia are attacked by demons and Jace is able to question a demon and find out where his father is. He escapes and sees his father that evening, but turns down the offer of joining Valentine and returns to Luke's. When the Inquisitor finds out, she puts him in a Malachi Configuration jail cell, which Alec tells him he can escape by jumping to the rafters thirty feet up, which Jace does. He begins to believe that Valentine did experiment on him. He meets Luke and Clary to fight Valentine on his ship, being given Clary's Fearless rune to combat Agramon. When the Shadowhunters arrive, the Inquisitor apologizes for not believing Jace and sacrifices herself to save his life. He finds Simon's nearly dead vampire body and allows Simon to drink his blood - reviving Simon. They go together to face Valentine and save Clary, who dismantles the ship.

Born Jocelyn Fairchild, goes as Jocelyn Fray. Mother of Clary Fray. Wife of Valentine Morgenstern. Member of Valentine's Circle. Friends with Luke Garroway (Lucian Greymark) since childhood. Mother of Jace and Clary.
When Valentine's Circle became more violent, Jocelyn teamed up with Luke to warn the Down Worlders and create a resistance. When the Circle's Uprising happened at the signing of the Accords, Jocelyn had left her son Jonathan at home with her parents. Valentine realized that she had betrayed him and gone to their home and burned it down. He killed her parents while faking his death and the death of Jonathan, instead taking Jonathan into seclusion and adopting the names of Michael and Jonathan Wayland. Jocelyn stole the Mortal Cup and, knowing that she was pregnant again and believing Jonathan to be dead, gave up the Shadow World. She pretended to be a Mundane, supporting herself and Clary with her art. When Luke found her in New York, she agreed to let him back into her life but he had also given up his ties to the Shadow World. Jocelyn hid the Mortal Cup in a tarot card deck that she handpainted and gave to her neighbor Madam Dorothea. She paid Magnus Bane to put a block on Clary's mind, hiding anything from the Shadow World. After an argument, Clary comes home to find her mother gone - kidnapped by Valentine. She tracks down Valentine and finds her mother on Roosevelt Island, but they lose the Mortal Cup and her mother still won't wake up from her coma.
Clary is approached by an old friend who says that Jocelyn placed herself in the coma to avoid giving information to Valentine. But the friend, Madeleine, knows how to get Jocelyn to wake up.
Currently in the hospital still in a coma

Previously known as Lucian Graymark. Werewolf in charge of a New York pack of werewolves. Owns and runs a small bookstore in the country. Was a Shadowhunter before being bitten and turned, parabatai to Valentine Morgenstern, and childhood friend of Jocelyn Fairchild, now Fray. A member of Valentine's Circle.
When Luke was turned into a werewolf, Valentine abandoned any relationship with him, giving Luke a knife and telling him to kill himself. As the Circle grew more violent and Jocelyn became worried for her and her son's safety, she reached out to Luke and with him, warned the Downworlders of Valentine's plan, mounting a resistance to the Circle's Uprising during the signing of the Accords. He was with Jocelyn when she found the remains of her family after Valentine burned her family's manor. Luke went with Jocelyn when she ran to the Mundane world but she soon broke ties with him. He eventually searched for her again, finding her and her daughter Clary in New York and agreeing to abandon his own ties to the Shadow World to be a part of their lives. When Jocelyn was taken, Luke pretended not to care about Clary for her own safety and found a local werewolf pack - fighting to become its leader. He sent the pack to protect Clary when she entered the vampire lair and he attacked Hodge when Hodge attacked Clary. When they found Valentine's location, he and the pack went with Clary to rescue Jocelyn. He lost many wolves, including his number two, Gretel, and number three, Alaric, who died saving Luke's life from Valentine. Valentine escaped with the Mortal Cup but they were able to rescue Jocelyn and take her to the hospital, where she is still comatose.
Becomes a sort of surrogate father to Jace, especially after Jace is kicked out of the New York Institute by Maryse. He is attacked by a demon when Maia is attacked and has to be healed by Magnus Bane. He accompanies Jace and Clary to Valentine's ship to fight Valentine, going with Jace to fight on the deck after Clary is kidnapped. His leg is broken and he is forced to retreat. After the fight is done and Valentine has escaped, he admits to Clary that he is in love with Jocelyn but has never told her.

Works as a tarot card reader and psychic, which she coins as "seeress and prophetess". Jocelyn made her a handpainted tarot deck which she hid the Mortal Cup inside, unbeknownst to Dorothea. She has a hidden portal inside her apartment. When Clary goes to retrieve the Cup from Dorothea's cards, they find that a Greater Demon (Abbadon - Demon of the Abyss) has killed Dorothea and disguised itself in her body. Fighting the demon banishes it back to Hell but injures Alec terribly in the process, nearly killing him.

Was paid by Jocelyn to block Clary's mind from the Shadow World. When Jocelyn is kidnapped, the block slowly starts to fade without being refreshed. When Alec is injured fighting a Greater Demon at Madam Dorothea's, Magnus comes to heal him and stays next to his bedside until Alec wakes up. He also tells Alec and Lightwood about the fight on Roosevelt Island between Luke's pack and Valentine's followers.
He offers to guard Jace while he is on house arrest but allows his place to be swapped with Alec when Jace needs to visit the Seelie Queen. He is the first person to bring up the Ritual of Infernal Conversion, which he believes Valentine is trying to do to the Soul-Sword so he can control demons. He investigates the murders of Downworlder children. He comes to heal Luke and Maia when they are attacked by Valentine's demons and later goes to Valentine's ship with them. He uses magic to get them to the ship as well as stripping the wards and protections from the ship so the others can go on board. When Alec falls overboard, he saves him from drowning. Valentine told his son, Jace, that his name was Jonathan Wayland. Luke's werewolf pack breaks in and fights the coven to allow Clary to escape (with Jace and Simon as a rat).
He insists that the vampires are not to blame for the recent murders of Downworld children, though not many believe him. When Simon comes to the Hotel Dumort and is drained of blood, he brings his body to the Institute where he explains what happened. Clary's best friend. In love with Clary. Dating Clary - kind of. Has a casual flirtation with Isabelle at times.
Simon gets roped into dealing with the Shadowhunters out of his concern for Clary and because he is the only one with access to a vehicle. At Magnus Bane's party, he is turned into a rat with a magical drink and taken as a rat to Hotel Dumort where he bites a vampire to get free. Clary and Jace are able to get out with Simon when Luke's pack breaks in to help them. Later, Simon drives the others to Madam Dorothea's apartment. When they are in trouble fighting the Greater Demon, Simon uses the archery skills he learned at summer camp to shoot out the skylight. The sunlight hits the demon directly and it disintegrates to return to Hell, saving the Shadowhunters' lives. On shaky ground with Clary after a pretty big fight.
After deciding that Clary is his girlfriend, she doesn't really argue with him about the point. Accompanies Clary, Jace, and Isabelle to see the Seelie Queen and upon seeing Jace and Clary kiss, gets angry and storms off alone. He had previously, while in the form of a rat, bit several vampires and the blood in his system called to him. He went to the Hotel Dumort to demand what was happening to him and was killed and drained of blood. Raphael brought his body to the Institute and they buried his body in a Jewish cemetary, he rose a vampire. He pretended to be sick so he didn't have to go out in the sun or tell his family. He was at Luke's when Maia and Luke were attacked by demons sent by Valentine. His house was later broken into and he was kidnapped while on the phone with Clary, taken to Valentine's ship, and killed and drained of blood by Valentine to complete the Ritual of Infernal Conversion. Jace found his nearly dead body and made Simon drink his blood, which revived Simon. They confronted Valentine together to save Clary and Clary destroyed Valentine's ship. On the way back to the shore, they discover that Simon can now be in the direct sunlight without any harm.

Husband of Jocelyn Fray, previously Jocelyn Fairchild. Father to Jace and Clary. Creator and leader of the Circle.
Believes that Downworlders should be completely exterminated, a belief that he fostered in the Circle. After Jocelyn had Jonathan, she became concerned for their safety from Valentine and Valentine's general views of violence. She turned to Luke, the two of them alerted Downworlders of the Circle's planned Uprising at the signing of the accords. When the Uprising was unsuccessful, Valentine escaped to the home he lived in with Jocelyn. He burned the manor down, killing Jocelyn's parents and staging the death of Jonathan and himself. Instead, he took Jonathan and lived in seclusion under the name Michael Wayland, a Circle member who had died during the Uprising. Everyone believed Valentine to be dead. For years, he told Jonathan that his last name was Wayland until Valentine again staged his death, this time in front of Jonathan. Jonathan was sent to live with Michael Wayland's parabatai Robert Lightwood and his family, choosing to go by Jace afterwards. Valentine hid for years until he tracked down Jocelyn, kidnapping her and trying to force her to tell him where she hid the Mortal Cup. Valentine makes a deal with Hodge, he will break Hodge's curse in exchange for the Cup and Jace. Clary, with Luke's help, tracks Valentine to Roosevelt Island. They mount an attack where the truth comes out about Valentine and Jonathan. Valentine escapes with the Cup, inviting Jace to join him in Idris, which Jace almost does but ultimately refuses. Currently hiding again with the Mortal Cup hidden, plotting for the demise of the Downworlders. He plans to turn Mundanes into more Shadowhunters using the Cup, even though doing so is dangerous for Mundanes and will likely kill more of them than it changes.
Hires a young warlock to summon the demon Agramon, the Demon of Fear, and the demon kills the warlock. Valentine used the warlock's blood to start the Ritual of Conversion, which switches the Soul-Sword's allegiance from angelic to demonic - allowing him to call and command demons at will. He later used Agramon to steal the Soul-Sword from the Silent City, killing any Silent Brothers present. He killed and used the blood of a Seelie Faerie child. Killed a young werewolf but was stopped from draining enough of it's blood. Kidnapped Maia and Simon to finish the RItual, killed SImon and drained his blood and used it on the Sword but Maia got away with Clary's help. When offered to trade the Mortal Instruments for Jace, he chose the Mortal Instruments. Jace and Clary are told by the Seelie Queen that Valentine did experiments on his children and they don't believe it at first, but they are starting to believe her.
