Parabatai and foster brother to Jace. Brother to Isabelle and Max. Eldest child of Robert and Maryse.
Considered the member of their group that prefers to fight from afar and not wade directly and recklessly into the fray. Very good with a bow and arrows but has never killed a demon, a point of contention for him when it is brought up. He is gay but not out, especially as it would not be accepted by the greater Shadowhunter community. Believes he is in love with Jace but the feeling is unrequited, Jace considers him a brother. Is badly injured while fighting a Greater Demon at Madam Dorothea's home, Magnus Bane arrives to help purge his body of the poison and wake Alec up.

Daughter of Jocelyn Fray (previously Fairchild) and Valentine Morgenstern. Sister of Jace. Best friend of Simon.
Was raised by her mother alone, believing her father Jonathan Clark had died in a car accident, with no knowledge of her Shadowhunter heritage. Only after a chance meeting with Jace, Alec, and Isabelle and Jocelyn's kidnapping does she find out the truth and that Jocelyn has blocked many of her memories. In trying to find her mother, she discovers the truth of Jocelyn's past, meets Magnus Bane and discovers the existence of the Shadow World, fights a vampire coven trying to save Simon, discovers that her father figure is actually a werewolf, and recovers the Mortal Cup from where her mother had hidden it. To get the Mortal Cup, she had to use a rune that allowed her to pull the Cup out of a painting her mother had done.

Son of Valentine Morgenstern and Jocelyn Fray, previously Jocelyn Fairchild. Raised to believe he was the son of the late Michael Wayland. Raised by Michael's parabatai Robert Lightwood and his wife Maryse at the New York Institute. Foster brother to Alec, Isabelle, and Max Lightwood. Parabatai to Alec. Might be in love with Clary, who he just found out is his younger sister.
One of the best Shadowhunters of his generation and has killed the most demons of anyone his age, he tends to seek out dangerous situations. Sarcastic and loud, not always well liked by others. His mother died when Jace was born. His father Michael was killed while Jace hid, but he saw the whole thing. He helps Clary to save Simon from a vampire coven and introduces Clary to the Shadow World, introducing her to the warlock who blocked her memories, Magnus Bane. He goes with Clary to retrieve the Mortal Cup from Madam Dorothea's, fighting a Greater Demon in the process and watching Alec nearly die. When Hodge trades the Mortal Cup with Valentine, Valentine also takes Jace from the Institute. It is later revealed that Jace's father was not Michael Wayland, that was a fake persona that he adopted after the real Michael Wayland died. His father was really Valentine Morgenstern who had faked his own death, meaning that Jocelyn is Jace's mother and Jace is Clary's older brother. Saves Luke's life when Valentine nearly kills him. Jace tries to get Valentine to give him the Mortal Cup but ultimately stays in New York instead of joining his father in Idris.

Born Jocelyn Fairchild, goes as Jocelyn Fray. Mother of Clary Fray. Wife of Valentine Morgenstern. Member of Valentine's Circle. Friends with Luke Garroway (Lucian Greymark) since childhood. Mother of Jace and Clary.
When Valentine's Circle became more violent, Jocelyn teamed up with Luke to warn the Down Worlders and create a resistance. When the Circle's Uprising happened at the signing of the Accords, Jocelyn had left her son Jonathan at home with her parents. Valentine realized that she had betrayed him and gone to their home and burned it down. He killed her parents while faking his death and the death of Jonathan, instead taking Jonathan into seclusion and adopting the names of Michael and Jonathan Wayland. Jocelyn stole the Mortal Cup and, knowing that she was pregnant again and believing Jonathan to be dead, gave up the Shadow World. She pretended to be a Mundane, supporting herself and Clary with her art. When Luke found her in New York, she agreed to let him back into her life but he had also given up his ties to the Shadow World. Jocelyn hid the Mortal Cup in a tarot card deck that she handpainted and gave to her neighbor Madam Dorothea. She paid Magnus Bane to put a block on Clary's mind, hiding anything from the Shadow World. After an argument, Clary comes home to find her mother gone - kidnapped by Valentine. She tracks down Valentine and finds her mother on Roosevelt Island, but they lose the Mortal Cup and her mother still won't wake up from her coma. Currently in the hospital.

Previously known as Lucian Graymark. Werewolf in charge of a New York pack of werewolves. Owns and runs a small bookstore in the country. Was a Shadowhunter before being bitten and turned, parabatai to Valentine Morgenstern, and childhood friend of Jocelyn Fairchild, now Fray. A member of Valentine's Circle.
When Luke was turned into a werewolf, Valentine abandoned any relationship with him, giving Luke a knife and telling him to kill himself. As the Circle grew more violent and Jocelyn became worried for her and her son's safety, she reached out to Luke and with him, warned the Downworlders of Valentine's plan, mounting a resistance to the Circle's Uprising during the signing of the Accords. He was with Jocelyn when she found the remains of her family after Valentine burned her family's manor. Luke went with Jocelyn when she ran to the Mundane world but she soon broke ties with him. He eventually searched for her again, finding her and her daughter Clary in New York and agreeing to abandon his own ties to the Shadow World to be a part of their lives. When Jocelyn was taken, Luke pretended not to care about Clary for her own safety and found a local werewolf pack - fighting to become its leader. He sent the pack to protect Clary when she entered the vampire lair and he attacked Hodge when Hodge attacked Clary. When they found Valentine's location, he and the pack went with Clary to rescue Jocelyn. He lost many wolves, including his number two, Gretel, and number three, Alaric, who died saving Luke's life from Valentine. Valentine escaped with the Mortal Cup but they were able to rescue Jocelyn and take her to the hospital, where she is still comatose.

Works as a tarot card reader and psychic, which she coins as "seeress and prophetess". Jocelyn made her a handpainted tarot deck which she hid the Mortal Cup inside, unbeknownst to Dorothea. She has a hidden portal inside her apartment. When Clary goes to retrieve the Cup from Dorothea's cards, they find that a Greater Demon (Abbadon - Demon of the Abyss) has killed Dorothea and disguised itself in her body. Fighting the demon banishes it back to Hell but injures Alec terribly in the process, nearly killing him.

Jace grew up believing that Michael Wayland was his father. However, according to Valentine, Michael was killed during the Circle's Uprising during the signing of the Accords and Valentine adopted his name, living in seclusion as Michael Wayland. Valentine told his son, Jace, that his name was Jonathan Wayland. Michael had been exiled from their society as punishment for his involvement with the Circle, so no one saw Michael after he disappeared from the Uprising. Valentine as Michael Wayland staged his own death, which Jace saw, and Jace was sent to live with the Lightwoods.

Clary's best friend. Mundane. In love with Clary. Has a casual flirtation with Isabelle at times.
Simon gets roped into dealing with the Shadowhunters out of his concern for Clary and because he is the only one with access to a vehicle. At Magnus Bane's party, he is turned into a rat with a magical drink and taken as a rat to Hotel Dumort where he bites a vampire to get free. Clary and Jace are able to get out with Simon when Luke's pack breaks in to help them. Later, Simon drives the others to Madam Dorothea's apartment. When they are in trouble fighting the Greater Demon, Simon uses the archery skills he learned at summer camp to shoot out the skylight. The sunlight hits the demon directly and it disintegrates to return to Hell, saving the Shadowhunters' lives. On shaky ground with Clary after a pretty big fight.

Husband of Jocelyn Fray, previously Jocelyn Fairchild. Father to Jace and Clary. Creator and leader of the Circle.
Believes that Downworlders should be completely exterminated, a belief that he fostered in the Circle. After Jocelyn had Jonathan, she became concerned for their safety from Valentine and Valentine's general views of violence. She turned to Luke, the two of them alerted Downworlders of the Circle's planned Uprising at the signing of the accords. When the Uprising was unsuccessful, Valentine escaped to the home he lived in with Jocelyn. He burned the manor down, killing Jocelyn's parents and staging the death of Jonathan and himself. Instead, he took Jonathan and lived in seclusion under the name Michael Wayland, a Circle member who had died during the Uprising. Everyone believed Valentine to be dead. For years, he told Jonathan that his last name was Wayland until Valentine again staged his death, this time in front of Jonathan. Jonathan was sent to live with Michael Wayland's parabatai Robert Lightwood and his family, choosing to go by Jace afterwards. Valentine hid for years until he tracked down Jocelyn, kidnapping her and trying to force her to tell him where she hid the Mortal Cup. Valentine makes a deal with Hodge, he will break Hodge's curse in exchange for the Cup and Jace. Clary, with Luke's help, tracks Valentine to Roosevelt Island. They mount an attack where the truth comes out about Valentine and Jonathan. Valentine escapes with the Cup, inviting Jace to join him in Idris, which Jace almost does but ultimately refuses. Currently hiding again with the Mortal Cup hidden, plotting for the demise of the Downworlders. He plans to turn Mundanes into more Shadowhunters using the Cup, even though doing so is dangerous for Mundanes and will likely kill more of them than it changes.
