He and Magnus bring blood for Simon when he is turned into a vampire and come to heal Luke when he and Maia are attacked by demons. He pretends to turn against Jace when the Inquisitor accuses him of visiting his father, so that he could later help Jace without being closely watched. He convinces Jace to break out of the Malachi Configuration and helps break his shackles. When Jace heads to Valentine's ship, Alec texts Magnus to meet Jace and stays at the Institute so he can tell the Inquisitor where Jace is once her planned trade with Valentine falls through. He fights with the Shadowhunters on Valentine's ship, almost drowning, but is saved by Magnus. When Magnus' power is depleted, he willingly gives Magnus some of his strength. He is almost definitely dating Magnus but has not had the courage to tell anyone.

They fight and kill all of Lilith's followers and in the fight, Alec finds Camille chained up. He breaks her chains and she disappears.

Meets with Camille to discuss how to make himself immortal, but Camille has no way for him to do so that he is willing to make use of. So she tells him instead that she will tell him how to make Magnus mortal if he kills Raphael Santiago. After some thought, he declines her offer. He works with Magnus and his friends to find a way to break the bond between Jace and Sebastian, summoning a demon first, and then an angel - who gives them the sword Glorious. When Simon is told where to find them by Clary, he leads the charge against Sebastian and the Dark Shadowhunters and gives Magnus strength when he needs to heal. When Alec goes to see Camille again after the battle, she has told Magnus what Alec was doing and Magnus catches him. He breaks up with Alec, insisting that Alec does not trust him.

He joins Jace and Clary when they travel to Edom to confront Sebastian. When they arrive in the Dark Gard, he helps to find the imprisoned Downworlders and escorts Magnus to the Council Room. When Sebastian and his Endarkened are defeated and Magnus makes a deal with Asmodeus to return them to their own world, Alec offers to stay with Magnus so they can spend their last time together but Magnus won't let him do that. Simon, who is also immortal but only seventeen, offers to give up his immortality instead. Asmodeius agrees to take Simon's immortality in exchange for opening a door to their world. In exchange for restarting Simon's heart so he doesn't just die when he becomes mortal again, he takes all of Simon's memories of the Shadow World. Brother Zachariah

Persuades the other Brothers to redo the protective rituals for Jace after he died and was brought back by Raziel. Zachariah told Jace that had he known Jace when he was a boy, he would have known exactly who he was.

He advocates to help Jace even when the Clave deprioritizes finding him and Sebastian. He helps the Lightwood siblings, Magnus, and Simon as they discuss how to break the bond between Jace and Sebastian, sidestepping both the Clave and the Brotherhood and not telling the Clave about their plans. Is told by Maryse that she can sometimes see Jace's location on a map thanks to a location rune that Valentine Marked Jace with, without Jace knowing. He again does not alert the Clave to this information. After the bond is broken and Jace is healing, he allows Clary to see him, against the Brotherhood's orders. He tells Clary that there were two people in his life that he would have died for. Neither time nor the Brotherhood wipes away memories that strong.

During the battle at the Adamant Citadel, he fights with the Shadowhunters. When Jace is stabbed by Sebastian, Zachariah tries to heal him and touches the wound with his hands. The heavenly fire invades Zachariah, burning out what makes him a Silent Brother as well as the sickness that caused him to join the Brotherhood. He is returned to a normal but healthy Shadowhunter and helps to advise the Counsil about how to treat with the warlocks, faeries, and Sebastian. He fights with the Shadowhunters in Alicante, taking special notice of Emma Carstairs. After Sebastian dies and the Endarkened destroyed, he meets with Theresa Gray and they begin a relationship, moving to Los Angeles together and stealing Church, the New York Institute's cat. Clary is told that he was the Silent Brother who put protections on her as a baby.

In truth, Camille had been the mortals and when Raphael found out, he told her to leave but had not yet found a way to remove her as clan leader. Simon refused Camille's offer and laid a trap for her to be taken by the Shadowhunters instead. She refuses to speak to anyone but Magnus and when he arrives, tells him that she was working for someone very powerful but requires total amnesty to reveal who it was. Before she gets it, she is kidnapped from the Sanctuary in the New York Institute by Lilith's followers and held captive. She had been murdering ex-Circle members for Lilith in exchange for Lilith's assistance in regaining her place as clan leader. Lilith used the Shadowhunter blood to inject pregnant women. Camille is found in chains by Alec and freed, she disappears before he can decide what to do with her.

She offers to tell Alec how to make Magnus mortal if he kills Raphael Santiago for her, which he refuses to do. In retaliation, she alerts Magnus to the fact that Alec has been meeting her and causes the two of them to break up. When Alec prepares to confront her, he is told that she is dead by Maureen, who insists that she killed Camille and is now the leader of the New York vampire coven.

Charles Freeborn

Clary (Clarissa) Fray

Shadowhunter

Daughter of Jocelyn Fray (previously Fairchild) and Valentine Morgenstern. Sister of Jonathan (fake Sebastian). Best friend of Simon. Dating Jace. Hero of the Mortal War and the Dark War.

Was raised by her mother alone, believing her father Jonathan Clark had died in a car accident, with no knowledge of her Shadowhunter heritage. Only after a chance meeting with Jace, Alec, and Isabelle and Jocelyn's kidnapping does she find out the truth and that Jocelyn has blocked many of her memories. In trying to find her mother, she discovers the truth of Jocelyn's past, meets Magnus Bane and discovers the existence of the Shadow World, fights a vampire coven trying to save Simon, discovers that her father figure is actually a werewolf, and recovers the Mortal Cup from where her mother had hidden it. To get the Mortal Cup, she had to use a rune that allowed her to pull the Cup out of a painting her mother had done. Finds out that Jace is actually her brother who everyone thought was dead.

Visits the Seelie Queen with Jace, Isabelle, and Simon, where she accidently ingests Faerie drink and cannot leave the Court. In order to free her, the Seelie Queen forces her to have the kiss she most highly desires - with her brother Jace. She also finds out in the Court that Valentine experimented with his children giving them both extra gifts. This causes Simon to freak out and storm off. When Jace is imprisoned in the Silent City, she accompanies Alec and Isabelle to answer a distress call. She uses an Unlock rune on the door and blows the door of its hinges. In a dream, her mother draws a protection rune on her arm that is still there when she wakes up and no one else recognizes. She believes that she can create new runes, something that no one has ever done, and creates a Fearless rune that almost causes Alec to come out to his parents. She and Luke accompany Jace to fight Valentine on his ship. Valentine's demons abduct her and Clary is able to help Maia escape into the ship before being grabbed by Valentine. She later uses a rune on the ship that makes it come apart at the seams, stopping the fight but also allowing Valentine to escape with the Sword. She is broken up with by Simon and then approached by Madeleine, who knows how to wake Clary's mom.

She illegally enters Idris through a Portal that she created, intent on visiting Ragnor Fell. She is taken by fake Sebastian to Ragnor Fell's cottage to find Magnus Bane there instead. Magnus tells here where to find the Lost Book of the White in Wayland manor. When she and Jace go to retrieve the book, they find Ithuriel trapped in the basement and release him. After Valentine gives his ultimatum to the Clave, Clary discovers an unknown rune she calls Alliance which allows Shadowhunters and Downworlders to team up and use the gifts of their partner. It allows the Clave to stand against Valentine and helps them to accept the help of the Downworlders. She overhears Malachi speaking to Valentine and decides to stop Valentine at Lake Lyn. When Valentine calls Raziel with the Mortal Instruments and binds him, forcing Raziel to give him a favor, Clary changed the runes so that Raziel had to gift her instead. She uses his gift to restore Jace's life. She and Jace begin to date, since they now know they aren't actually siblings.

Jace and Clary's relationship turns tumultuous as Jace hides that he's been having violent dreams of killing Clary. They discover that Jace's dreams have been infiltrated by Lilith, Mother of Demons, and she gains possession of him. He kidnaps Clary and Lilith uses Clary to coerce Simon to bite Sebastian and bring him back to life. Because Clary had Raziel resurrect Jace, the balance between good and evil is skewed and Lilith intends to bring Sebastian back, which is only possible because it will restore the balance. Is given a pendant by Kaelie that will summon the Seelie Queen when used.

She uses the Seelie Queen's pendant to ask if there's a way to find Jace. The Queen agrees to give her the information she needs if Clary retrieves a set of faerie rings for the New York Institute library that allows two people to communicate silently. Clary retrieves the rings but uses them herself, giving one to Simon as she joins Jace and Sebastian. She learns that Sebastian plans to make a Dark Mortal Cup in order to make a new race of Shadowhunters from demon blood, and to raise Lilith again. She learns about how lonely Sebastian is. When Jace's rune is damaged and he is returned to his own mind, she tells Sebastian instead of allowing Jace to turn himself in to the Silent Brothers. She regrets this when she sees Amatis turned into a Dark Shadowhunter and is nearly turned herself. She uses Glorious to stab Jace in the chest. Glorious breaks his bond with Sebastian and burns the evil out of Jace, but it does not kill him because he is more good than evil.

After the Institutes are attacked by Sebastian, Clary takes refuge in Alicante with the other Shadowhunters, including her mom, and Luke. She befriends Emma Carstairs and tries to tell the Council not to underestimate Sebastian, which does not work. She and Jace sneak to the Adamant Citadel to fight against Sebastian when the Endarkened attacked and comes face to face with Amatis before the Iron SIsters come out and the Endarkened retreat. Sebastian demands that Clary and Jace be given to him, otherwise he will destroy all the Shadowhunters either by killing them or making them Endarkend. Clary and Jace decide to follow him to Edom to confront and kill him instead, taking Simon, Isabelle, and Alec with them. While there, Jace loses control of his heavenly fire but Clary figures out a way to imbue her Morgenstern sword, Heosphoros, with the fire instead. When they make it to the Dark Gard and the imprisoned Downworlders are released, Clary agrees to sit in the throne next to Sebastian and rule with him as long as he closes the borders from her world to Edom and vice versa. Once he does, she stabs him with Heosphoros. The evil is burned out of him and he becomes what he could have been, Jonathan, for a few moments. He tells them how to destroy the Endarkened before dying in the arms of Clary and Jocelyn. Simon then agrees to give his mortality and his memories of the Shadow World to Asmodeus to get them out of Edom. Clary tries to visit Simon, but he doesn't remember her until prodded by Magnus Bane's spell. He comes to her mother's wedding and remembers that they're best friends.

She idolizes Jace, but becomes friends with Clary, even sneaking out to tell them what she overhears from living in Jia Penhallow's house while in Alicante. She helps defend the Blackthorn children when Alicante is attacked, even killing a member of the Wild Hunt after he broke into the Accords Hall. She fights with the Shadowhunters during the attack on Alicante, but faces severe repurcussions because she is half-faerie. Some Shadowhunters want her and her brother stripped of their Marks but others say no. In a compromise, and partly because Jia Penhallow is concerned for Helen's safety, Helen is sent to Wrangel Island to study the wards instead of returning to the Los Angeles Institute to help raise her siblings. Aline decides to go to Wrangel Island with her.

Henry Branwell

Shadowhunter

Hodge Starkweather

Shadowhunter

Previous member of Valentine's Circle. Tutor to Jace, Alec, and Isabelle.

As punishment for taking part in the Circle's Uprising during the signing of the Accords, Hodge was exiled from Idris and cursed not to leave the walls of the New York Institute. He conspired to help Valentine recover the Mortal Cup in exchange for Valentine breaking his curse. When Valentine retrieved the Cup from the Institute, Hodge also gave him Jace. Hodge then escaped the Institute but was followed by Clary. Hodge may have hurt her, but Luke attacked him and took Clary to safety. When Luke went to retrieve Hodge's body, believing him to be dead, Hodge had disappeared.

He is found in prison but gives Simon the name Samuel Pangborn, so Simon doesn't realize who he is at first. When Simon is rescued by Clary and Jace from his jail cell, they save Hodge as well. He tells them that he believes Lake Lyn is one of the Mortal Instruments, the missing Mirror. He tries to explain himself to Jace but is killed by fake Sebastian before he can tell Jace the truth. Fake Sebastian then takes the theory of Lake Lyn to Valentine. They later find that Hodge had helped Valentine cut Celine Herondale's baby from her when she killed herself. She hates Valentine, which she takes out on Jace whenever she can. She imprisons him in the Silent Cell and believes Jace to be working with his father. She tries to trade Jace for the Mortal Instruments, which Valentine does not agree to. She then joins Jace to fight Valentine and sacrifices herself to save Jace's life.

Amatis tells Jace that Imogen must have realized he was Stephen Herondale's son, and her own grandson, because of the star-shaped birthmark on his shoulder. All the Herondale men have the same shaped birthmark, an echo of when a Herondale was touched by an angel.

Deceased

Isabelle (Izzy) Lightwood

Shadowhunter

Sister to Alec and the late Max Lightwood. Only daughter of Robert and Maryse Lightwood. Foster sister of Jace. Wears a ruby necklace. Dating Simon Lewis. Hero of the Dark War.

Fights with Jace and Alec, preferring to use a whip. Jace says she is one of the best Shadowhunters he's ever met. She tends to be a louder member of their group and enjoys partying with Downworlders. Very beautiful and enjoys a flirtation with Simon.

She accompanies Alec and Clary to answer the Silent Brothers distress call, discovering the murdered Brothers and that Valentine has stolen the Soul-Sword and rescuing Jace. She goes to the Seelie Queen, escorted by a Faerie that she is kind of dating named Meliorn. She fights with the Shadowhunters on Valentine's ship, getting hit hard by a demon's poison and needing to evacuate.

She fights the night that the demons infiltrate Idris, saving Aline's life from a demon attack, but is told by Alec to stay at the Penhallow house with Max until their parents return because she is underage, while he goes to defend the city. She is knocked unconscious by fake Sebastian and he kills her younger brother Max, which Isabelle blames herself for. She is not allowed to fight the battle at Brocelind Plain against Valentine's army, she tracks Jace instead and finds him about to be killed by Jonathan/fake Sebastian. She stops Jonathan and is whipped by him, giving Jace the opportunity to stab him. They believed he was dead, though his body was later gone.

Casually dating Simon but gets angry when she finds out Simon is also dating Maia. When Simon goes missing from the engagement party, Isabelle notices and mounts a search party that leads them to the Church of Talto and the followers of Lilith. Isabelle discovers their room of dead babies and believes they are trying to make more children like Sebastian. They fight and kill the followers of Lilith before finding Clary, Jace, and Simon.

She travels with Jocelyn to the Adamant Citadel, but does not get an answer of how to break the bond between Sebastian and Jace. She helps to raise the demon Azazel, and then the angel Raziel. She begins to realize that she likes Simon very much and is relieved when he does not die. She fights with the Shadowhunters against the Dark Shadowhunters, guarding Magnus when he is stabbed by Amatis.

Leaves her necklace with Simon in New York when she goes with her family to Alicante, believing he will be safer in New York and be kept safer still with the necklace (it does save his life). She is not happy when Raphael brings Simon to Alicante with him. She goes with Jace and Clary when they decide to find Sebastian in Alicante, using that time to tell Simon that she is in love with him and vice versa. When attacked by demons trying to get the skeptron and nearly dies, but SImon drips his demon blood on her leg to heal it. When in the Dark Gard, she helps to release the imprisoned Downworld representatives and then to find Jocelyn. After the borders are closed to Edom and Sebastian and the Endarkened are killed, Simon offers up his mortality and his memories of the Shadow World to get them all home safely. Isabelle doesn't want him to do this since he will forget her and they will not be able to tell him about the Shadow World again, since that breaks the Accords, but it is Simon's choice and he does it anyway. She is transported back to Alicante without Simon. Later, Magnus agrees to go with Clary and Isabelle to see if Simon remembers anything of the Shadow World and to try to jog his memory if he does. Isabelle sees that the name of his band is now the Mortal Instruments. Magnus helps bring some memories back to Simon and he attends Jocelyn and Luke's wedding with Isabelle that night - though he doesn't remember everything.

Ithuriel

Angel

Angel trapped and tortured by Valentine in the basement of the Wayland Manor. His blood was used in Valentine's experiments, affecting both Jace and Clary. He has sent Clary messages in the form of visions and dreams. Clary and Jace freed him from his trap. He took one of Jace's daggers and stabbed himself with it, going up in flames and disappearing, but I'm assuming he's not dead since he's an angel.

Jace Herondale

Shadowhunter

Son of Stephen and Celine Herondale. Raised to believe he was the son of the late Michael Wayland. Raised by Michael's parabatai Robert Lightwood and his wife Maryse at the New York Institute. Foster brother to Alec, Isabelle, and the late Max Lightwood. Parabatai to Alec. Dating Clary. Hero of the Mortal War and the Dark War.

One of the best Shadowhunters of his generation and has killed the most demons of anyone his age, he tends to seek out dangerous situations. Sarcastic and loud, not always well liked by others. His mother died when Jace was born. His father Michael was killed while Jace hid, but he saw the whole thing. He helps Clary to save Simon from a vampire coven and introduces Clary to the Shadow World, introducing her to the warlock who blocked her memories, Magnus Bane. He goes with Clary to retrieve the Mortal Cup from Madam Dorothea's, fighting a Greater Demon in the process and watching Alec nearly die. When Hodge trades the Mortal Cup with Valentine, Valentine also takes Jace from the Institute. It is later revealed that Jace's father was not Michael Wayland, that was a fake persona that he adopted after the real Michael Wayland died. His father was really Valentine Morgenstern who had faked his own death, meaning that Jocelyn is Jace's mother and Jace is Clary's older brother. Saves Luke's life when Valentine nearly kills him. Jace tries to get Valentine to give him the Mortal Cup but ultimately stays in New York instead of joining his father in Idris.

Goes to see the Seelie Queen and is told that his father experimented on him and Clary, giving them special gifts. His is heightened physical abilites. The Seelie Queen also forces him to kiss Clary for Clary to leave the Court. Jace is kicked out of the Institute just for being Valentine's son when Maryse returns from Idris, and later blamed and imprisoned in the Silent City by the Inquisitor. He is in a cell when Valentine steals the Soul-Sword and murders the Silent Brothers. He is then put under house arrest and in the care of Magnus Bane. He and Magnus go to Luke's when Luke and Maia are attacked by demons and Jace is able to question a demon and find out where his father is. He escapes and sees his father that evening, but turns down the offer of joining Valentine and returns to Luke's. When the Inquisitor finds out, she puts him in a Malachi Configuration jail cell, which Alec tells him he can escape by jumping to the rafters thirty feet up, which Jace does. He begins to believe that Valentine did experiment on him. He meets Luke and Clary to fight Valentine on his ship, being given Clary's Fearless rune to combat Agramon. When the Shadowhunters arrive, the Inquisitor apologizes for not believing Jace and sacrifices herself to save his life. He finds Simon's nearly dead vampire body and allows  Simon to drink his blood - reviving Simon. They go together to face Valentine and save Clary, who dismantles the ship.

Travels with Clary to Wayland manor to find the Lost Book of the White and finds the angel Ithuriel trapped in the basement. They release him. They return to Alicante to find the city being attacked by demons and the wards down. When Valentine issues his ultimatum, Jace chooses to track fake Sebastian down and find Valentine, with the express purpose to kill him. He tracks Sebastian and the two of them fight. In this fight, he finds out that Sebastian was also raised by Valentine. That he is actually Jonathan Morgenstern and Jace is not Valentine's son by blood. Jonathan nearly kills Jace but Isabelle saves Jace, distracting Jonathan long enough for Jace to stab him. They believed he was dead but when his body was not found later, Jace believes he is still alive. He found from eavesdropping on Jonathan and Valentine that Valentine planned to call Raziel from Lake Lyn. He travels to Lake Lyn to stop Valentine, finding Clary there already, and Valentine kills him. He uses Jace's blood to summon Raziel, not knowing that Clary had changed the runes. When Raziel was forced to give a favor, he owed the favor to Clary, who requested that Jace be brought back - which was granted. After finding out that his birth parents were Stephen and Celine Herondale, he was given a box of his father's things by Amatis. Jace's mother was given powders that she did not know were made from angel's blood while she was pregnant with Jace, leading to his better than average abilities. When his father died, Celine killed herself, but Jace was cut out of her body by Valentine and Hodge and raised by Valentine.

Jace begins to distance himself from Clary because he's been having violent dreams of killing Clary. When they go to the Silent Brothers, he's told that the protections placed on him as a baby were stripped in his death and need to be replaced, which should stop the dreams. Before that happens, Lilith visits him in a dream and places her rune on his chest and Jace is placed completely under her control. He kidnaps Clary and brings her to Lilith, who uses her to coerce Simon into bringing Sebastian back. Clary uses a seraph blade to break Lilith's rune, bringing Jace back to himself and he fights Lilith. In the end though, it is Simon that destroys Lilith. Jace still struggles with the guilt he feels as he watches over the body of Sebastian and waits for Maryse to come. Lilith's rune heals and Sebastian calls Jace to his casket. He has a matching rune and is apparently alive enough to use his brain. Jace drips blood over Sebastian, who wakes up and the two cut their hands and mix their blood in a handshake. Sebastian tells Jace they are now one.

Jace is bonded to Sebastian - whatever hurts one hurts the other. If one dies, so does the other. And the bond gives Sebastian control over Jace though Jace remembers what happens. Eventually, Clary agrees to come with them and learns that Sebastian wants to raise Lilith again and to create a Dark Mortal Cup to create a new race of Dark Shadowhunters. Jace kills the Iron Sister that creates the new Mortal Cup for them on Sebastian's orders. His rune is damaged in the fight and he is brought back to his own mind, he wants to turn himself and the new Mortal Cup to the Silent Brothers, but Clary tells Sebastian instead of letting Jace do as he wanted and Sebastian heals the rune. They manage to raise Lilith and about forty Dark Shadowhunters before they are interrupted by the Lightwoods and friends. Clary stops Sebastian from turning her and Jace into Dark Shadowhunters and stabs Jace in the chest with Glorious. The sword breaks his bond with Sebastian and burns the evil out of him, he barely lives through it but does not die because he is more good than evil. However, heavenly fire from the sword still runs through his veins.

Jace has a hard time controling his heavenly fire at first, so he starts meditating with Jordan. He travels to Alicante after the Institutes are attacked by Sebastian and tries to convince the Council not to underestimate Sebastian, but they don't listen. He and Clary sneak throught the Portal to fight at the Adamant Citadel and Jace comes face to face with Sebastian. When Sebastian stabs him, he is hurt by Jace's heavenly fire - which also calls the Iron Sisters out of the citadel, causing the Endarkened to retreat. When Brother Zachariah tries to help Jace, the heavenly fire burns out of Zachariah what makes him a Silent Brother and the sickness that made him become a Brother at all. After checking himself out of the Basilias, Jace and Clary decide to confront Sebastian in Edom, taking Alec, Isabelle, and Simon with them. While in Edom, Jace loses control of his heavenly fire and Clary is able to trap it in her sword Heosphoros. She then uses Heosphoros to kill Sebastian and Simon gives up his immortality and memories of the Shadow World in order to get them safely back from Edom to their own world. Once back in Alicante, Jace decides to take his father's last name and be known as Jace Herondale, receiving a Herondale family ring from Theresa Gray.

Jia Penhallow

Shadowhunter

Consul of the Clave. Wife of Patrick Penhallow, mother of Aline Penhallow. Previously ran the Beijing Institute. Currently lives in Alicante. Met her husband when he came to Beijing to get away from the Circle. The real Sebastian Verlan is her nephew, his mother was a Penhallow. Max was killed by Sebastian in her home.

New Inquisitor of the Clave. She does not sanction the Lightwoods for not alerting the Clave when they confronted the Dark Shadowhunters - partly because her daughter Aline lied about what happened leading up to the battle.

She underestimates Sebastian even though several people warn her how scheming he is. She asks for help from the Spiral Labyrinth to help find a cure for the Endarkened, which is unsuccessful, and then to help ward against the faeries. After Sebastian dies, she and the Council decide that the faeries will pay for damage done to the Praetor Lupus and Alicante out of their own funds, and they will disband their armies and no longer be allowed to carry a weapon upon the risk of their life. Some Shadowhunters call for Mark and Helen Blackthorn to be stripped of their Marks because they are half-faerie and Jia is forced to recuse herself since her daughter Aline is tied to Helen Blackthorn. She is unhappy with the compromise of sending Helen to Wrangel Island, although she believes Helen will be safe there, and to leave Mark with the Wild Hunt.

Jocelyn Fray

Shadowhunter

Born Jocelyn Fairchild, went as Jocelyn Fray. Mother of Clary Fray. Wife of Valentine Morgenstern. Member of Valentine's Circle. Married to Luke Garroway (Lucian Greymark), who she has been friends with since childhood. Mother of Jonathan and Clary.

When Valentine's Circle became more violent, Jocelyn teamed up with Luke to warn the Down Worlders and create a resistance. When the Circle's Uprising happened at the signing of the Accords, Jocelyn had left her son Jonathan at home with her parents. Valentine realized that she had betrayed him and gone to their home and burned it down. He killed her parents while faking his death and the death of Jonathan, instead taking Jonathan into seclusion and adopting the names of Michael and Jonathan Wayland. Jocelyn stole the Mortal Cup and, knowing that she was pregnant again and believing Jonathan to be dead, gave up the Shadow World. She pretended to be a Mundane, supporting herself and Clary with her art. When Luke found her in New York, she agreed to let him back into her life but he had also given up his ties to the Shadow World. Jocelyn hid the Mortal Cup in a tarot card deck that she handpainted and gave to her neighbor Madam Dorothea. She paid Magnus Bane to put a block on Clary's mind, hiding anything from the Shadow World. After an argument, Clary comes home to find her mother gone - kidnapped by Valentine. She tracks down Valentine and finds her mother on Roosevelt Island, but they lose the Mortal Cup and her mother still won't wake up from her coma.

Clary is approached by an old friend who says that Jocelyn placed herself in the coma to avoid giving information to Valentine. But the friend, Madeleine, knows how to get Jocelyn to wake up.

Clary travels to Idris to find the Lost Book of the White in order to bring her mother back from her sleep. When she finds the book, Clary gives it to Magnus Bane, who goes back to New York and wakes Jocelyn up. Jocelyn returns to Idris in time to see Clary announce the Alliance rune and fight with Luke at Brocelind Plain. Before the battle, she tells Clary the full truth about Valentine and how she knows that Jace is not Jonathan, her son with Valentine. They realize that Jonathan has been posing as Sebastian Verlac. After the battle, Jocelyn tells Luke that she is in love with him.

When she hears about the baby left behind the hospital, she contacts Catarina, who sneaks her into the hospital morgue to see the baby's body. Jocelyn believes someone injected the baby with demon blood to make him like Sebastian.

She tries to kill Sebastian when Jace and Sebastian come to recruit Clary, even knowing that it will kill Jace too. This leads to Luke getting stabbed in the chest and nearly dying. As Luke recovers, she tells Clary that she needs to let Jace go. Jace is no good for her in general, and lost to her now. This spurs Clary to join Sebastian and Jace. When the Lightwoods fight the Dark Shadowhunters, she joins them.

She travels with Luke and Clary to Alicante after the Institutes are attacked by Sebastian and she is kidnapped by Meliorn with Luke, Raphael, and Magnus. She is kept separate from the Downworlders but is eventually rescued by Isabelle, Simon, and Luke. When Clary stabs Sebastian with Heosphoros, she and Clary hold him as he dies and sees who he could have been if he hadn't been poisoned by Valentine. After the Dark War is over, she marries Luke.

John Carstairs

Shadowhunter

Emma Carstairs' father. Murdered with his wife the same day that Sebastian attacked the Los Angeles Institute, but Emma does not believe that he was killed by Sebastian - who would have preferred to make him Endarkened.

Deceased

Jonathan Wayland

Shadowhunter

He and his father Michael Wayland were killed by Valentine and their bodies placed in Fairchild manor before it was burned down. Everyone believed their bodies to those of Valentine and Jonathan Morganstern. Jace was raised believing that he was Jonathan Wayland when in fact, he was the son of Stephen and Celine Herondale.

Deceased

Jordan Kyle

Werewolf

Dating Maia. New roommate of Simon. Member of the Praetor Lupus.

Jordan turned Maia into a werewolf when she broke up with him and he saw her kiss someone else. He and his family moved right after the attack.

After he attacked Maia, he joined the Praetor Lupus. It turns out, the night that he attacked Maia was the first time he ever turned. He had become angry and violent after being bitten himself but did not know the man who bit him was a werewolf and had no idea what was happening. He joined the Praetor to ensure others in his situation are not left alone. He takes Simon's case for the Praetor, as a new vampire with no clan, because he sees Maia's name and wants to make sure she's okay. He begins to protect Simon and searches for him with Isabelle and Maia after he is summoned by Lilith. He fights the followers of Lilith and helps to kill them and finds the room of dead babies before they find Simon.

He and Maia start dating again. He learns that his Praetor roommate Nick is tasked with Maureen's case. Nick later ends up dead, presumably killed by Maureen. He goes to the Praetor to find a cure for the demon steel that Luke is fighting. He helps Magnus to summon Azazel the demon. He fights with Luke's pack against the Dark Shadowhunters.

After the Shadowhunters regroup in Alicante, Simon is attacked by Endarkened and escapes, but is kidnapped by Maureen's clan. Jordan looks for him but does not find him, then he is called to the Praetor Lupus. He asks Maia to go with him and when they arrive, they find the members of the Praetor murdered and the building burned down. Sebastian comes out and kills Jordan, giving Maia a message for the Downworlders that any who ally with the Shadowhunters will be killed too.

Deceased

Jules (Julian) Blackthorn

Shadowhunter

Eldest son of Andrew Blackthorn, the leader of the Los Angeles Institute, with his late wife, though he had two older half-faerie children, Helen and Mark. He has four younger siblings. Best friend of Emma Carstairs.

When the Institute is attacked, he and Emma get his younger siblings to the office to notify the Clave of what is happening. A Portal is opened, allowing Emma, Julian, and the younger Blackthorns to escape to Alicante. They stay with Helen and the Penhallows and Julian is questioned by the Mortal Sword more than once. He feels responsible for his younger siblings and when their Endarkened father breaches the Gard, Julian kills him to protect his siblings. He asks Emma to become his parabatai so they are not separated when the Blackthorns return to Los Angeles. Although Jia Penhallow makes him a promise not to give up of Mark Blackthorn, the Shadowhunters decide to leave Mark with the Wild Hunt. His uncle, Arthur Blackthorn, will be coming to the Los Angeles Institute to run the Institute and raise his nieces and nephews, but Julian knows that the job will really be his.

Kadir Safar

Shadowhunter

Shadowhunter in the New York Conclave who works closely with Maryse. His brother Malek was killed on Valentine's ship.

Kaelie Whitewillow

Seelie Faerie

Pixie. Member of the Seelie Court who brings Clary a token from the Seelie Queen - a pendant that Clary can use to summon the Queen.

When Sebastian's forces are overcome, Kaelie is chosen to represent the Seelie Court when the faeries receive their punishment for aligning with Sebastian. She tries to tell the Shadowhunters that the punishment is too harsh, but the Shadowhunters decide that they will pay for damages done to Alicante and the Praetor Lupus, disband their armies, and will not be allowed to carry weapons. If they do, they will be killed on sight.

Lilith

Demon

Demon who gave her blood to Valentine to use for his experiments, affecting Jonathan.

Lilith, who has kept watch over Sebastian, saw Jace kill Sebastian and pulled him out of the river. After seeing that Clary had Jace resurrected by Raziel, she knew the balance between good and evil would need to be restored and she could have Sebastian returned as well. She kidnapped Maureen, thinking she was Simon's girlfriend, and turned her into a vampire so Simon would come to Lilith. She infiltrated Jace's dreams and possessed him, commanding him to kidnap Clary. She used Clary to coerce Simon to bite Sebastian and then give Sebastian his own blood, to raise him again. Sebastian's blood made Simon so sick he could not give Sebastian his own blood and the ritual was only half completed before Jace was returned to himself and fought Lilith. While Lilith whipped Clary as punishment for Jace, Simon threw himself in front of the whip. The damage that Lilith caused was turned on her sevenfold due to Simon wearing the Mark of Cain, and Lilith was destroyed.

Sebastian is able to reraise her, and she annoints the Dark Mortal Cup with her blood. Doing so allows him to create Dark Shadowhunters but she is weak, so she doesn't stick around to see it.

Destroyed by heavenly wrath and reraised by Sebastian

Lily

Vampire

Vampire and second-in-command to Rafael while he is in charge of the coven at Hotel Dumort. Fought at Brocelind Plain against Valentine's army.

She is contacted by Maia after Raphael travels to Alicante as the vampire representative on the Council, and she agrees with Maia that Maureen is unfit to lead the vampire clan. Lily comes up with a plan, convincing Maia to inject herself with holy water and then striking a deal with Maureen. When the deal is sealed with blood, which Maureen will drink, it will kill her. After Maureen is dead, Lily becomes head of the New York clan and works with Maia against Sebastian. She attends Jocelyn and Luke's wedding.

Livvy (Livia) Blackthorn

Shadowhunter

Eldest daughter of Andrew Blackthorn, leader of the Los Angeles Institute, and his late wife, though he had two elder half-faerie children as well. Twin sister to Ty. Has three older siblings and two younger siblings.

Is at the Institute when it is attacked by Sebastian, though she is able to escape to Alicante, where she is questioned by the Mortal Sword. She stays in the Penhallow House while in Alicante and was in the Accords Hall when Alicante was attacked by Endarkened and faerie warriors.

Luke Garroway

Werewolf

Previously known as Lucian Graymark. Werewolf in charge of a New York pack of werewolves. Owns and runs a small bookstore in the country. Was a Shadowhunter before being bitten and turned, parabatai to Valentine Morgenstern, and childhood friend of Jocelyn Fairchild, now Fray, who he is now engaged to. A member of Valentine's Circle.

When Luke was turned into a werewolf, Valentine abandoned any relationship with him, giving Luke a knife and telling him to kill himself. As the Circle grew more violent and Jocelyn became worried for her and her son's safety, she reached out to Luke and with him, warned the Downworlders of Valentine's plan, mounting a resistance to the Circle's Uprising during the signing of the Accords. He was with Jocelyn when she found the remains of her family after Valentine burned her family's manor. Luke went with Jocelyn when she ran to the Mundane world but she soon broke ties with him. He eventually searched for her again, finding her and her daughter Clary in New York and agreeing to abandon his own ties to the Shadow World to be a part of their lives. When Jocelyn was taken, Luke pretended not to care about Clary for her own safety and found a local werewolf pack - fighting to become its leader. He sent the pack to protect Clary when she entered the vampire lair and he attacked Hodge when Hodge attacked Clary. When they found Valentine's location, he and the pack went with Clary to rescue Jocelyn. He lost many wolves, including his number two, Gretel, and number three, Alaric, who died saving Luke's life from Valentine. Valentine escaped with the Mortal Cup but they were able to rescue Jocelyn and take her to the hospital, where she is still comatose.

Becomes a sort of surrogate father to Jace, especially after Jace is kicked out of the New York Institute by Maryse. He is attacked by a demon when Maia is attacked and has to be healed by Magnus Bane. He accompanies Jace and Clary to Valentine's ship to fight Valentine, going with Jace to fight on the deck after Clary is kidnapped. His leg is broken and he is forced to retreat. After the fight is done and Valentine has escaped, he admits to Clary that he is in love with Jocelyn but has never told her.

He accidentally travels with Clary to Idris and deposits her at his sister Amatis' house in Alicante. Luke speaks to the werewolf pack in Brocelind Forest and convinces many of his New York pack to come to Idris, expecting some sort of attack by Valentine. They appeared to help the Shadowhunters when the wards of Alicante were lowered and they were attacked by demons. He advises the Shadowhunter Clave when they are given an ultimatum by Valentine, urging them to turn Valentine's offer down and instead fight with the Downworlders against him. In exchange for the help of the Downworlders, he asks for four Council seats - one for each Downworlder race. At first he is turned down, but after Clary shows the Alliance rune, the Shadowhunters agree to his terms. He fights with Jocelyn at Brocelind Plain against Valentine's army. After the battle is done, he is asked by the Shadowhunters to be the werewolf representative on the Council. He professes his love to Jocelyn finally and she returns his sentiments, the two start a romantic relationship.

He and Maryse concoct a plan to trap Camille, with Simon's help, after they discover that Camille is killing the dead Shadowhunters.

When Jace and Sebastian come to recruit Clary, he threatens them with a shotgun and is stabbed with a demon steel dagger. The demon steel dagger nearly kills him but Jordan and Maia retrieve a cure from Praetor Scott with the Praetor Lupus. He is recovering and can't get out of bed, but he allows Simon to use his farm to raise the angel Raziel and sends his pack to fight the Dark Shadowhunters.

Travels to Alicante with Jocelyn and Clary, he is later kidnapped by Meliorn and taken to Edom with Jocelyn, Raphael, and Magnus. He is kept imprisoned with Magnus and Raphael, but Jocelyn is separated from them. After being rescued by Alec, Isabelle, and Simon, he helps to find Jocelyn. They watch as Sebastian is killed and is transported back to Alicante by Asmodeus. After the Dark War, he marries Jocelyn.

Madam Dorothea

Mundane

Neighbor of Jocelyn and Clary in New York. Raised as the adopted daughter of a warlock.

Works as a tarot card reader and psychic, which she coins as "seeress and prophetess". Jocelyn made her a handpainted tarot deck which she hid the Mortal Cup inside, unbeknownst to Dorothea. She has a hidden portal inside her apartment. When Clary goes to retrieve the Cup from Dorothea's cards, they find that a Greater Demon (Abbadon - Demon of the Abyss) has killed Dorothea and disguised itself in her body. Fighting the demon banishes it back to Hell but injures Alec terribly in the process, nearly killing him.

Deceased

Madeleine Bellefleur

Shadowhunter

Friend of Jocelyn from Idris. A member of the New York Conclave. She shows up at the Silent CIty when Valentine steals the Soul-Sword and fights with the Shadowhunters against Valentine. She approaches Clary and tells her that Jocelyn put herself to sleep but Madeleine know how to wake her up. She tells Clary to travel to Idris and speak to Ragnor Fell, who knows how to wake Jocelyn up. She is killed during an attack of Forsaken as the Lightwoods travel to Idris.

Deceased

Magnus Bane

Warlock

High Warlock of Brooklyn. Demon Mark: Cat eyes. Boyfriend of Alec Lightwood. Son of the Greater Demon Asmodeus.

Was paid by Jocelyn to block Clary's mind from the Shadow World. When Jocelyn is kidnapped, the block slowly starts to fade without being refreshed. When Clary comes to him for answers, he can only tell her that Jocelyn started coming to him when Clary was a toddler. When Alec is injured fighting a Greater Demon at Madam Dorothea's, Magnus comes to heal him and stays next to his bedside until Alec wakes up. He also tells Alec and Lightwood about the fight on Roosevelt Island between Luke's pack and Valentine's followers.

He offers to guard Jace while he is on house arrest but allows his place to be swapped with Alec when Jace needs to visit the Seelie Queen. He is the first person to bring up the Ritual of Infernal Conversion, which he believes Valentine is trying to do to the Soul-Sword so he can control demons. He investigates the murders of Downworlder children. He comes to heal Luke and Maia when they are attacked by Valentine's demons and later goes to Valentine's ship with them. He uses magic to get them to the ship as well as stripping the wards and protections from the ship so the others can go on board. When Alec falls overboard, he saves him from drowning. Alec notices how drained Magnus is, he is about to pass out, and offers to give his strength to Magnus so he can continue to help.

He conjures a portal for the Lightwoods to be able to travel to Idris, which is attacked by Forsaken, but everyone but Madeleine is able to get out alive. He is then summoned by Ragnor Fell but when he arrives at Ragnor's cottage, finds the cottage ransacked and Ragnor missing, likely dead. Getting information from a hidden message from Ragnor, he tells Clary where she can find the Lost Book of the White and agrees to take the book and wake Jocelyn up in exchange for being able to keep the book afterward. He does just that and returns to Alicante to fight with the Shadowhunters against Valentine. He pairs up with Alec with the Alliance rune and Alec finally tells everyone that they are dating.

Goes on a worldwide vacation with Alec until they are called back to New York to speak to Camille, who Magnus used to date and who refuses to speak to anyone else. This causes an issue in his relationship with Alec because Magnus does not like talking about the past.

He helps Alec and his friends find a way to break the bond between Jace and Sebastian - visiting the Adamant Citadel, summoning the demon Azazel, and summoning the angel Raziel in the process. He fights against the Dark Shadowhunters, getting stabbed in the chest by Amatis and needing to draw strength from Alec in order to heal. He is told by Camille that Alec had come to see her, asking for a way to make Magnus mortal, and he breaks up with Alec. Not because of what Alec wanted, but because he does not trust Magnus and did not speak to him about it.

He asks Catarina to go to Alicante as the warlock representative because he does not want to see Alec, but she convinces Magnus to go. Instead of making up with Alec, he is kidnapped by Meliorn and imprisoned in Edom. His father Asmodeus calls to him while in Edom, Magnus fights his father's call but becomes very weak in doing so. By the time Alec, Isabelle, and Simon free him, Magnus is barely able to stand. After the borders between their world and Edom are sealed and Sebastian and the Endarkened are killed, Magnus tries to make a deal with Asmodeus to get them safely back to their world. What Asmodeus wants is Magnus' immortality, freely given, to help power Edom. This would kill Magnus because he is four hundred years old, give or take. Simon volunteers his immortality instead, and also gives up his memories of the Shadow World so that Asmodeus restarts his heart before taking his immortality. They are all sent back to their own world, where Magnus gives Alec a book of stories from his past so Alec can learn more about him. The two of them get back together. Magnus agrees to go with Clary and Isabelle to see Simon and when they see that Simon's band is called The Mortal Instruments, he offers Simon the chance to have his memories returned (if possible). Simon takes the chance and regains a few of his memories to start. Magnus attends Jocelyn and Luke's wedding with Alec.

Maia Roberts

Werewolf

Werewolf in Luke's pack who was turned by Jordan, who she dated again before he was killed by Sebastian. Leader of the New York pack and werewolf representative to the Council. Kind of dating Bat.

She is taken by Valentine to complete the Ritual of Infernal Conversion on the Soul-Sword, but Clary helps her escape and the Ritual is not completed.

Maia travels with Luke's pack to Idris, fighting in Alicante when the wards are down and demons attack the city. She also fights at Brocelind Plain. She has a crush on Simon.

Casually dates Simon and is upset when she finds out that he is also casually dating Isabelle. More upset when she finds out that Simon is sharing an apartment with her ex-boyfriend Jordan who Turned her. She learns that Jordan hadn't known he was a werewolf or why he was becoming so possessive and aggressive. The night he Turned Maia was the first full-moon and when he realized what he was. She searches for Simon with Jordan and Maia, discovering and killing the followers of Lilith and finding the room of dead babies. She kisses Jordan after the fighting is done, but she doesn't know why she did it or what it means.

Maia and Jordan start dating again. She goes with Jordan to the Praetor to try to find a cure for the demon steel for Magnus. She helps Magnus to summon Azazel the demon. She fights with Luke's pack against the Dark Shadowhunters.

She protects Simon with Jordan when he is attacked by an Endarkened, though he is then kidnapped by the vampires. She is with Jordan when they find the Praetor Lupus destroyed and Sebastian kills Jordan. Sebastian gives Maia a message for the Downworlders that anyone who allies with the Shadowhunters will be killed. Maia relays the message but does not think the Downworlders should abandon the Shadowhunters, since Sebastian will come for them next. When Bat is challenged for control of Luke's pack by Rufus, Maia interrupts the fight to challenge Rufus herself. She wins, becoming temporary pack leader. She conspires with Maia to kill Maureen, allies with Lily and Catarina to help the Shadowhunters, and sends a message to Jia Penhallow warning her of Sebastian's upcoming attack - giving the Shadowhunters time to prepare. After the Dark War ends, Luke steps down as werewolf representative to the Council, giving Maia that title as well as the permanent position as leader of the pack. She attends his wedding to Jocelyn and holds hands with Bat.

Malachi Dieudonne

Shadowhunter

Consul of the Clave, was implicit in putting Simon into a jail cell. He voted to surrender to Valentine and Clary and Jace later discovered that he was working with Valentine. He was killed by falling on a shard of glass when Hugo attacked him.

Deceased

Malcolm Fade

Warlock

High Warlock of Los Angeles. Demon mark: purple eyes.

Mark Blackthorn

Shadowhunter

Eldest son of Andrew Blackthorn, leader of the Los Angeles Institute. His mother is a faerie woman he does not know. He has one older sister, Helen, and five younger half-siblings from Andrew and his late wife.

When the Los Angeles Institute was attacked, Mark went to defend the Institute but unlike his father, he was not Turned because he was half-faerie. Instead, he was given to the Wild Hunt. He saw Jace, Clary, and their friends before they went to Edom and they convinced him to stay strong and keep fighting. He was able to get a message to his siblings for Jia Penhallow, warning her that the faeries were allied with Sebastian and allowing them to prepare defenses against the faeries. However, after the Dark War ended, many Shadowhunters wanted both Mark and Helen stripped of their Marks because they were half-faerie. As a compromise, they decided to send Helen to Wrangel Island and to not try to to negotiate Mark's release from the Wild Hunt.

Maryse Lightwood

Shadowhunter

Pronounced May-ris. Born Maryse Trueblood. Head of the New York Institute. Wife of Robert Lightwood. Mother to Alec, Isabelle, and the late Max Lightwood, foster mother of Jace. Previously a member of Valentine's Circle.

When the Circle's Uprising was unsuccessful, Maryse and her husband were given a more lenient sentence since they came from good families and had a young son (Alec). They were exiled and put in charge of the New York Institute, Hodge was placed with them. She and her husband are absent for the entire length of City of Bones, leaving their children with Hodge while they visit Idris for the most recent signing of the Accords.

When she arrives home with Max, she kicks Jace out of the Institute. She later tries to argue in his favor against the Inquisitor but Jace is irreparably hurt by being kicked out by the woman he considered a foster mother. She forces Imogen to reveal to the Clave that she tried to trade Jace for the Mortal Instruments and free him from teh Malachi Configuration (though he had already escaped) and calls the Conclave to fight on Valentine's ship, where she gets injured. After, she asks Jace to stay at the Institute and explains to him that she was afraid he would hurt her like his father did and she already loved him so much. Jace moves back in.

She travels to Idris to attend the meetings of the Clave, staying with the Penhallow family. When the wards are lowered and demons attack Alicante, her youngest son Max is killed by fake Sebastian. She argued for turning down Valentine's ultimatum and agreeing to give Downworlder seats on the Shadowhunter Council in exchange for their help in fighting Valentine. She fought at Brocelind Plain against Valentine's army.

Isabelle tells Simon that Robert blamed Maryse for getting them involved in the Circle. He nearly divorced her but they were already pregnant with Isabelle and he decided to stay. However, years later he began having an affair, only breaking it off when Maryse became pregnant with Max. Isabelle believes that being told this has led her to have a difficulty trusting men or a romantic partner. Maryse works to find out who has been killing Shadowhunters, working with Luke and Clary and finding out it is Camille. They concoct a plan to capture her with Simon, but Camille is later kidnapped from the Sanctuary by the followers of Lilith.

She discovers that Jace was unknowingly Marked with a location rune by Valentine. She uses this to see his location on a map occasionally. She tells Brother Zachariah, but neither of them alert the Clave. When told by Alec and Isabelle that they knew where to find Jace, she again did not alert the Clave - risking sanctions to save Jace's life if possible. She fought the Dark Shadowhunters. After the battle, the Consul Jia Penhallow did not sanction her, in large part because her daughter Aline Penhallow lied about events leading up to the battle. She finds a pair of wings that were cut off an angel in the libaray of the New York Institute with a note from Sebastian saying that he is coming.

She travels with her family to Alicante, where she stays in the Inquisitor's house but does not share a room with her husband. They decide to separate after the Dark War ends. She fights with the Shadowhunters against Sebastian's forces.

Maureen Brown

Vampire

Leader of the Manhattan vampire clan.

Eric's cousin's friend who has a crush on Simon and attends all of his band's shows. After a show when Simon is starving, he loses control and bites Maureen but does not kill her. She is awake but doesn't know what happened and Jordan makes sure she is okay before being sent home in a cab. Sometime afterward, Maureen is found by Lilith who believes Maureen is Simon's girlfriend. She kills Maureen and turns her into a vampire.

She goes on a killing spree in New York, breaking Accord Law, and a Praetor is sent after her. He later ends up dead, presumably killed by her. When Alec confronts Camille about betraying him to Magnus, he finds Maureen instead. She tells him that she killed Camille and is now the leader of the New York vampire coven.

The torture that she experienced before she was killed broke her, leading Maureen to act erratically. She has SImon kidnapped so that he can fall in love with her and they can be together, but Raphael saves him. Afterward, Lily and Maia conspire to kill Maureen and make Lily leader of the clan - allying themselves together against Sebastian. Maia injects herself with holy water so when Maureen bites her, sealing a deal they made, Maureen injests the holy water and dies.

Deceased

Max Lightwood

Shadowhunter

Brother of Alec and Isabelle. Youngest child of Robert and Maryse Lightwood. Foster brother of Jace.

Several years yonger than Isabelle, Max is too young to fight. With his parents in Idris during the current signing of the Accords.

He comes back to New York with his mom, ahead of his dad, and meets Clary. He helps his siblings get information from the Inquisitor because he is too young for her to be concerned with.

Travels with the rest of his family to Idris for the meetings of the Clave. He sees someone climb the demon towers that keep Alicante safe and tries to alert someone, but is not believed. When the wards are lowered and demons attack Alicante, he is killed by fake Sebastian, who is the person he saw climbing the towers. Isabelle blames herself for his death.

Deceased

Meliorn

Seelie Faerie

Half-faerie knight of the Seelie Court. Representative of the faeries to the Council.

He was kind of dating Isabelle and told them the Seelie Queen wanted to speak to them.

He fought with the Shadowhunters at Brocelind Plain. After the battle was done and the Clave were choosing representatives for the Downworlder seats, the Seelie Queen tried to convince Clary to argue in favor of Meliorn being the Fair Folk representative. Clary turned her down.

Meets with Sebastian in Prague to tell him that the Seelie Queen stands with Sebastian.

He invites the other Downworlder representatives to dinner before their Council meeting, drugging them and imprisoning them in Edom. When Jace, Clary, and their friends go to Edom to confront Sebastian, they see Meliorn walking free and realize they betrayed the Shadowhunters. It's revealed that Meliorn, who had told the Shadowhunters the faeries would fight against Sebastian, is only half-faerie and therefore can lie. Alec kills him.

Deceased

Michael Wayland

Shadowhunter

Member of Valentine's Circle. Believed by everyone to be Jace's father until the truth was revealed that Jace's father was Stephen Herondale.

Jace grew up believing that Michael Wayland was his father. However, according to Valentine, Michael was killed during the Circle's Uprising during the signing of the Accords and Valentine adopted his name, living in seclusion as Michael Wayland. Valentine told his son, Jace, that his name was Jonathan Wayland. Michael had been exiled from their society as punishment for his involvement with the Circle, so no one saw Michael after he disappeared from the Uprising. Valentine as Michael Wayland staged his own death, which Jace saw, and Jace was sent to live with the Lightwoods.

His body was burned with his son Jonathan Wayland's in the fire of Fairchild manor, which everyone believed to be the bodies of Valentine and Jonathan Morgenstern.

Patrick Penhallow

Husband of Jia Penhallow. Father of Aline Penhallow. Former member of the Circle who lives in Idris. Abandoned the Circle when it started to become more radicalized and fled to Beijing where he met his wife Jia. Uncle to the real Sebastian Verlac, whose mother was Patrick's sister. Max was killed by fake Sebastian in his home.

Ragnor Fell

Warlock

Warlock living in Idris who helped Jocelyn Fairchild when she first started planning to escape Valentine. Madeleine told Clary to track down Ragnor Fell, who knew how to wake Jocelyn up from her sleep. When Clary and the fake Sebastian arrive at Ragnor's cottage, Magnus Bane is posing as Ragnor because Ragnor's cottage had been ransacked and Ragnor likely killed.

Presumed dead.

Raphael Santiago

Vampire

Vampire in the New York Coven.

When Simon is taken by some of the vampires to the lair, Clary and Jace break in with Raphael's help to find Simon. However, Raphael lured them in so that they could be killed with no repurcusions, since they had broken the Accords by entering the vampire's territory. Luke's werewolf pack breaks in and fights the coven to allow Clary to escape (with Jace and Simon as a rat).

He insists that the vampires are not to blame for the recent murders of Downworld children, though not many believe him. When Simon comes to the Hotel Dumort and is drained of blood, he brings his body to the Institute where he explains what happened. He helps Clary and the others to bury Simon and raise him as a vampire, helping Simon through the initial few hours. He allows Jace to use a demon motorcycle the first time he goes to Valentine's ship.

He tells Luke that the only way the vampires will fight with the Shadowhunters at Brocelind Plain is if SImon Lewis is turned over to them. Raphael wants to kill Simon because as a vampire that can walk in the sun he is "unnatural", and also to prevent other vampires from trying to replicate the experience. Simon turns himself over to Raphael and the vampires fight with the Downworlders, although they are unable to kill Simon.

Camille tells Simon that Raphael ran her out of her clan because she had discovered he was killing people for fun. In truth, Camille had been murdering the mortals and when Raphael found out, he told her to leave but had not yet found a way to remove her as clan leader. Raphael has been acting as clan leader since then but did not want to tell anyone what Camille had done to prevent Accord Law from punishing them and because Camille still had those who were loyal to her in the clan.

Camille tries to convince Alec to kill Raphael for her, in exchange for a way to turn Magnus mortal, but he refuses her offer. Raphael talks to the Praetor about Maureen and her killing streak, saying that if they can't rein her in then the vampires will have to kill her.

After Maureen kills Camille and becomes clan leader, Raphael convinces Nightshade to allow him to go to Alicante to act as the vampire representative to the Council. He rescues Simon from Maureen to take him to Alicante as well, believing that the Shadowhunters will listen to Simon more than himself. While in Alicante, he attends a dinner thrown by Meliorn where he is drugged and kidnapped. He and the other Downworlder representatives are imprisoned in Edom. Sebastian tries to convince Raphael to join him, bring the vampires with him, and Raphael is easy to convince. But Raphael refuses to kill Magnus as a sign of good faith and is killed by Sebastian instead.

Deceased

Rebecca (Becky) Lewis

Mundane

Simon's sister and daughter of Elaine Lewis. Called Becky.

When Elaine tells Rebecca that Simon is dead, she wonders if Elaine snapped and did something to Simon herself. She later is able to get ahold of Simon, who meets her and tells her the truth about being a vampire. She does not abandon him, she loves him and still wants him to be a part of her life.

When Simon makes a deal to give his immortality and his memories of the Shadow World to Asmodeus in exchange for getting himself and his friends safely out of Edom, Asmodeus also takes the memories of any mortal who knew Simon was a vampire. Becky no longer remembers what Simon used to be.

Robert Lightwood

Shadowhunter

Inquisitor of the Clave. Husband of Maryse Lightwood (for now). Father to Alec, Isabelle, and the late Max Lightwood, foster mother of Jace. Parabatai to Michael Wayland. Previously a member of Valentine's Circle.

When the Circle's Uprising was unsuccessful, Robert and his wife were given a more lenient sentence since they came from good families and had a young son (Alec). They were exiled and put in charge of the New York Institute, Hodge was placed with them. He and his wife are absent for the entire length of City of Bones, leaving their children with Hodge while they visit Idris for the most recent signing of the Accords.

He returns to New York from Idris after his wife and Max, staying to see the Accords signed. When he arrives, he tries to speak in favor of Jace to the Inquisitor but is overruled. He fights on Valentine's ship, where he is injured.

Hee travels to Idris to attend the meetings of the Clave, staying with the Penhallow family. When the wards are lowered and demons attack Alicante, his youngest son Max is killed by fake Sebastian. He argued for turning down Valentine's ultimatum and agreeing to give Downworlder seats on the Shadowhunter Council in exchange for their help in fighting Valentine. He fought at Brocelind Plain against Valentine's army.

Robert has not yet returned from Idris, working with the Shadowhunters there to rebuild after the war with Valentine.

Has not returned to New York from Idris. Runs and wins the position of Inquisitor.

He and Maryse both stay in the Inquisitor's house when his family is in Alicante, but they stay in separate rooms and have decided to separate by the end of the Dark War. He does not listen when he is told not to underestimate Sebastian. He steps in for Jia when she is asked to recuse herself when decided Helen and Mark Blackthorn's fates. Robert does not agree with the compromise, but it is decided that Helen will go to Wrangel Island and Mark will stay with the Wild Hunt, simply because they are half-faerie. He reveals to Alec that he had driven his parabatai away when Michael said he was in love with Robert. Seeing Alec with Magnus reminds him of that, and the shame that he feels about what he did. He wants to try to repair their relationship, saying that Alec is a better man than he will ever be.

Rufus Hastings

Werewolf

Werewolf and member of the Praetor Lupus who survived Sebastian's attack. He is allowed to stay with Luke's pack, but sows discord among them. He tells the others they should not help the Shadowhunters so that Sebastian will leave them alone. When warned to stop by Bat, he challenges Bat for leadership of the pack. Rufus would have killed Bat and won, but Maia interrupts their fight to challenge Rufus herself. She kills him and becomes pack leader.

Deceased

Samuel Blackwell

Shadowhunter

Shadowhunter working with Valentine to find the Mortal Cup. Jace recognizes them as the men who "killed" his father - it's later revealed that his father faked his own death. Killed by Luke when he and his pack attacked Roosevelt Island.

Deceased

Sebastian Morgenstern

Shadowhunter

Son of Valentine Morgenstern and Jocelyn Fairchild. Brother of Clary. Birth name Jonathan Morgenstern but goes by Sebastian.

Jocelyn was given demon blood while she was pregnant with Jonathan and when he was born, she could tell that he was a monster. When the Uprising happened, Jonathan was taken into hiding by Valentine. He was raised by Valentine at Hodge Starkweather's family home while Jace was raised at Wayland manor. Even Valentine considers Jonathan to be lacking in patience and compassion, too hard even for him. Jonathan impersonates Sebastian Verlac, probably killing the real Sebastian, and lives with the Penhallow family in Alicante for the meetings of the Clave. He climbs the demon towers and lowers the wards, allowing demons to attack the city, and was seen by Max Lightwood. He knocked Isabelle unconscious and killed Max while everyone else was on the streets fighting the demons. He tried to convince Clary to come with him after the battle, but she would not. He followed her, Jace, and Alec to free Simon. They also freed Hodge Starkweather, who Jonathan overheard telling of his theory that the Mirror is actually Lake Lyn. He killed Hodge and took that information to Valentine, who used it to raise Raziel. He was tracked by Jace, who he fought. He nearly killed Jace but was interrupted by Isabelle. While Jonathan whipped Isabelle with her own electrum whip, Jace was able to rally his strength and stab Jonathan. Jace and Isabelle believed Jonathan was dead but his body was missing when Shadowhunters later went to collect it.

Lilith tried to use Simon's blood to raise him, rebalancing the scale between dark and light after Jace was killed and brought back by Raziel. She forces Simon to drink from his body, but is unable to finish the ritual before she is struck down by heavenly wrath. She did enough that he was able to use the rune bonding him to Jace, forcing Jace to finish raising him and disappearing together off the rooftop.

He begins to go by the name Sebastian again. He and Jace live in an apartment of Valentine's that travels in a pocket between realms. He collects adamas and has an Iron Sister named Magdalena create a new Mortal Cup. He uses the cup to raise Lilith, who annoints the cup with her blood and he is able to have Shadowhunters drink from it, creating a new race of Dark Shadowhunters. Their ritual is interrupted when they are attacked and Sebastian and Jace's bond is broken. He flees with the Dark Mortal Cup and no one knows where to find him. He cuts off the wings of an angel and delivers them to the New York Institute, warning them that he is coming.

Sebastian begins to use the Endarkened to attack Shadowhunter Institutes, creating more Endarkened. He also attacks the Adamant Citadel but retreats after seeing Jace's heavenly fire and the Iron Sisters come out to fight. He allies with the Seelie Queen, using faerie warriors in his army and allowing his forces to move around unseen. He is able to travel back and forth to Edom, where he is undetectable. He wants to rule Edom with Clary at his side. He and his forces destroy the Praetor Lupus, killing Jordan in the process, to stop the Downworlders from helping the Shadowhunters and also imprison the Downworlder representatives to the Council. When Clary and Jace come to the Dark Gard, Clary agrees to join him if he seals the borders between Edom and their world, which Sebastian does. After the borders are closed, Clary stabs him with Heosphoros, imbued with Jace's heavenly fire. The sword burns the evil out of him and he speaks to Clary and Jocelyn for a short time as the man he could have been if he'd not been poisoned by Valentine. Before he dies from his wound, he tells them how to destroy the Infernal Cup - which kills all of the Endarkened.

Deceased

Sebastian Verlac

Shadowhunter

Nephew of Patrick and Jia Penhallow, cousin of Aline. Lived in Paris with his Aunt Elodie at the Paris Institute. His parents were killed when he was young while raiding a demon nest and he was raised by Elodie. It is assumed that he was attacked on his way to Alicante by Jonathan and Jonathan assumed his identity.

Presumed dead

Simon Lewis

Mundane

Clary's best friend. Son of Elaine and brother of Rebecca. Was in love with Clary, but has moved on. Dating Isabelle. Hero of the Dark War.

Simon gets roped into dealing with the Shadowhunters out of his concern for Clary and because he is the only one with access to a vehicle. At Magnus Bane's party, he is turned into a rat with a magical drink and taken as a rat to Hotel Dumort where he bites a vampire to get free. Clary and Jace are able to get out with Simon when Luke's pack breaks in to help them. Later, Simon drives the others to Madam Dorothea's apartment. When they are in trouble fighting the Greater Demon, Simon uses the archery skills he learned at summer camp to shoot out the skylight. The sunlight hits the demon directly and it disintegrates to return to Hell, saving the Shadowhunters' lives. On shaky ground with Clary after a pretty big fight.

After deciding that Clary is his girlfriend, she doesn't really argue with him about the point. Accompanies Clary, Jace, and Isabelle to see the Seelie Queen and upon seeing Jace and Clary kiss, gets angry and storms off alone. He had previously, while in the form of a rat, bit several vampires and the blood in his system called to him. He went to the Hotel Dumort to demand what was happening to him and was killed and drained of blood. Raphael brought his body to the Institute and they buried his body in a Jewish cemetary, he rose a vampire. He pretended to be sick so he didn't have to go out in the sun or tell his family. He was at Luke's when Maia and Luke were attacked by demons sent by Valentine. His house was later broken into and he was kidnapped while on the phone with Clary, taken to Valentine's ship, and killed and drained of blood by Valentine to complete the Ritual of Infernal Conversion. Jace found his nearly dead body and made Simon drink his blood, which revived Simon. They confronted Valentine together to save Clary and Clary destroyed Valentine's ship. On the way back to the shore, they discover that Simon can now be in the direct sunlight without any harm.

When meeting Jace before the Lightwoods travel to Idris via Portal, they are attacked by Forsaken. Simon is injured and taken through the Portal into Alicante illegally by Jace, in order to save his life. After explaining all this, they are told by the Consul and Inquisitor of the Clave that Simon will return by Portal to Manhattan. However, he is taken to a jail cell instead. Inquisitor Aldertree wants Simon to say that the Lightwoods brought him to Alicante on purpose in order to spy for Valentine, implicating the Lightwood family in Valentine's most recent plot to bring down the Clave, but Simon refuses to do that. Inquisitor Aldertree decides to starve Simon until he agrees to do as asked, but he is snuck blood by Jace and Isabelle. He strikes up conversation with the prisoner in the adjacent cell, convincing Jace to rescue him when he comes to break Simon out of jail, and the prisoner is revealed to be Hodge Starkweather. The vampires refuse to fight with the Shadowhunters against Valentine unless Simon is given to them. Raphael wants to kill Simon because he considers Simon "unnatural" and does not want other vampires trying to replicate whatever made him into a Daylighter. Simon has Clary give him the Mark of Cain before turning himself over to the vampires. This requires the vampires to follow through on their word and fight at Brocelind Plain, but also will not allow them to hurt Simon because whatever pain is put on Simon comes back on the perpetrator sevenfold. Simon fights with the Shadowhunters at Brocelind Plain. He is over Clary, happy to be just friends, and doesn't quite believe Clary when she says both Isabelle and Maia have a crush on him.

Both Maia and Isabelle find out that Simon is dating them both and break up with him. His mother finds out he is a vampire and believes he is a monster, he moves out of the house and rooms with Jordan, who he finds out is the werewolf that Turned Maia and is a member of the Praetor Lupus sent to help Simon. When Simon begins to receive threatening letters, Jordan decides to protect him. Simon bites Maureen when he starves himself and his thirst takes over him, but he does not kill her. Maureen is later killed and made vampire by Lilith to lure Simon to Lilith's side. Lilith possesses Jace and has him kidnap Clary, specifically to coerce Simon into biting and raising Sebastian to restore the balance of life and death, good and evil. Simon agrees to do it to keep Clary safe but Sebastian's blood makes him so sick he cannot complete the ritual and give his own blood to Sebastian. When Lilith begins whipping Clary because Jace's possession has been broken and Lilith wants to punish him, Simon struggles to his feet and throws himself in front of the whip. Because he wears the Mark of Cain, the damage Lilith bestows is turned on her sevenfold and she is destroyed. Afterward, Simon finds out that Isabelle, Maia, Alec, and Jordan came to search for him when they find out he was missing. They were looking for him specifically, making him realize they do actually care about him. He and Isabelle have a nice moment where she tells him about her dad's affair and he almost kisses her.

His mother wards her home against him but he eventually tells his sister about his being a vampire, mostly so she doesn't have their mother commited. When Clary joins Jace and Sebastian, he wears the other faerie ring. He works with the Lightwoods and Magnus on finding a way to break the bond between Jace and Sebastian. They plan a visit to the Adamant Citadel, raise the demon Azazel, and the angel Raziel. When Simon raises Raziel, the angel does not kill him because of the Mark of Cain. He agrees to give Simon the sword Glorious in exchange for the Mark, and Raziel removes the Mark from Simon's forehead. Simon carries Glorious into battle with the Dark Shadowhunters. He gives it to Clary, who stabs Jace with it - breaking his bond with Sebastian and burning the evil out of him.

Simon is left in New York with Isabelle's necklace when the Shadowhunters retreat to Alicante. He is attacked by an Endarkened and then kidnapped by Maureen, but he is saved and taken to Alicante by Raphael. When Raphael goes missing, he speaks to Jia on behalf of the Downworlders and vampires in particular. He travels with Jace and Clary to Edom, saving Isabelle's life when she is badly injured in battle by dripping his own blood on her injury and healing it. He and Isabelle profess their love to each other. When they arrive at the Dark Gard, they go with Alec to find the Downworlder representatives, and then to find Jocelyn. When Sebastian is killed and the borders closed, Magnus makes a deal with Asmodeus to get them back to their own world but Magnus will die in the process. Simon agrees to give Asmodeus his own immortality in place of Magnus', since he was still a teenager when he was Turned and will not die of old age when mortal again. He also agrees to have his memories of the Shadow World removed so that Asmodeus will restart his heart before removing his immortality. Simon is taken back to New York while the others are taken to Alicante, and he does not know who Clary is when she called him. But later, he names his band the Mortal Instruments, indicating that he does remember something of the Shadow World. Using this as an opening, Magnus offers to try to return his memories to him, which Simon accepts. He does not remember much at first, but things are returning to him. He attends Jocelyn and Luke's wedding with Isabelle.

He was killed in a raid on a vampire nest, which caused a heavily pregnant Celine to commit suicide which her unborn child did not survive. His father died soon after. After Celine killed herself, her unborn child was cut from her body and raised by Valentine at Wayland manor, believing that his father was Michael Wayland. This child was Jace, who had ingested angel blood in utero from powders given to his mother by Valentine.

She had stood in as an Iron Sister when protections were placed on Clary as a baby. It is after Tessa that Jocelyn took the name Fray. F for Fairchild, RAY for Gray. She and Zachariah decide to move together to Los Angeles, stealing the cat Church in the process.

The Seelie Queen

Seelie Faerie

Queen of the Seelie Faerie Court.

She requests a meeting with Jace and Clary, but elects not to ally with them when she finds out it is Valentine who killed the Faerie child. She does tell them she will give aid where she is able. She reveals to Clary and Jace that they are their father's experiments, which they later realize means they have been given extra powers. When Clary accidently drinks in the Faerie Court, the Seelie Queen will not release her until she gets the kiss she most desires - Jace's kiss.

After the battle at Brocelind Plain, which the Fair Folk take part in (though we don't see the Seelie Queen) she asks Clary for a deal. In exchange for a favor from her, Clary will try to convince Luke and the Shadowhunters to make Meliorn the Fair Folk representative on the Council. Her offer is turned down by Clary.

She sends Kaelie to speak to Clary, giving her a pendant that will summon the Seelie Queen when used.

She agrees to tell Clary what she knows about finding Jace if Clary retrieves a pair of faerie wings that allows the wearers to speak silently. When Clary uses the rings herself, the Queen is able to hear her conversations and tell Sebastian what was said. She sends Meliorn to tell Sebastian that she stands with him.

She allies herself with Sebastian and has Mark Blackthorn sent to the Wild Hunt. Sebastian is able to get to Edom though a passage in her court. She warns Sebastian when Jace, Clary, and their friends use that same passage to find him.

Ty (Tiberius) Blackthorn

Shadowhunter

Was at the Institute when it was attacked by Sebastian and was led to safety by Julian, who helped him escape to Alicante. There he was questioned with the Mortal Sword. He stayed with Helen and the Penhallows while in Alicante, finding the message that Mark sent to warn the Shadowhunters that the faeries were working with Sebastian. Was in the Accords Hall when it was attacked by faerie warriors and Endarkened. Nearly went with his Endarkened version, but was saved by Julian who killed their father. Ty screamed that he hated Julian for doing it, but Livvy tried to remind him that he was no longer their father.

Valentine Morgenstern

Shadowhunter

Husband of Jocelyn Fray, previously Jocelyn Fairchild. Father to Jace and Clary. Creator and leader of the Circle.

Believes that Downworlders should be completely exterminated, a belief that he fostered in the Circle. After Jocelyn had Jonathan, she became concerned for their safety from Valentine and Valentine's general views of violence. She turned to Luke, the two of them alerted Downworlders of the Circle's planned Uprising at the signing of the accords. When the Uprising was unsuccessful, Valentine escaped to the home he lived in with Jocelyn. He burned the manor down, killing Jocelyn's parents and staging the death of Jonathan and himself. Instead, he took Jonathan and lived in seclusion under the name Michael Wayland, a Circle member who had died during the Uprising. Everyone believed Valentine to be dead. For years, he told Jonathan that his last name was Wayland until Valentine again staged his death, this time in front of Jonathan. Jonathan was sent to live with Michael Wayland's parabatai Robert Lightwood and his family, choosing to go by Jace afterwards. Valentine hid for years until he tracked down Jocelyn, kidnapping her and trying to force her to tell him where she hid the Mortal Cup. Valentine makes a deal with Hodge, he will break Hodge's curse in exchange for the Cup and Jace. Clary, with Luke's help, tracks Valentine to Roosevelt Island. They mount an attack where the truth comes out about Valentine and Jonathan. Valentine escapes with the Cup, inviting Jace to join him in Idris, which Jace almost does but ultimately refuses. Currently hiding again with the Mortal Cup hidden, plotting for the demise of the Downworlders. He plans to turn Mundanes into more Shadowhunters using the Cup, even though doing so is dangerous for Mundanes and will likely kill more of them than it changes.

Hires a young warlock to summon the demon Agramon, the Demon of Fear, and the demon kills the warlock. Valentine used the warlock's blood to start the Ritual of Conversion, which switches the Soul-Sword's allegiance from angelic to demonic - allowing him to call and command demons at will. He later used Agramon to steal the Soul-Sword from the Silent City, killing any Silent Brothers present. He killed and used the blood of a Seelie Faerie child. Killed a young werewolf but was stopped from draining enough of it's blood. Kidnapped Maia and Simon to finish the RItual, killed SImon and drained his blood and used it on the Sword but Maia got away with Clary's help. When offered to trade the Mortal Instruments for Jace, he chose the Mortal Instruments. Jace and Clary are told by the Seelie Queen that Valentine did experiments on his children and they don't believe it at first, but they are starting to believe her. When Clary destroys his ship, Valentine is able to get away with the Sword.

It is discovered that Valentine raised two boys. One, his own son Jonathan Morgenstern who he had given demon blood while in utero, who was raised at Hodge Starkweather's family home' and the son of Stephen and Celine Herondale, Jace, who he had given angel blood in the form of powders given to his pregnant mother. He cut Jace from his mother's body after she killed herself and raised him as Jonathan Wayland in Wayland Manor. He had gotten the demon blood from the Lady of Edom and the angel blood from Ithuriel, who he had trapped in the cellar of Wayland manor. Jonathan likely killed the real Sebastian Verlac, impersonating him in Alicante in order to lower the wards, allowing demons to attack the city. Afterward, Valentine issued the Clave an ultimatum. Either join him and make him in charge, taking a binding oath of loyalty to him, or be killed. He planned to raise Raziel and as the favor he was owed, ask that any Shadowhunters who were not loyal to him and had not drunk from the Mortal Cup to be made into Forsaken. He left Sebastian in charge of his demon army and attacking the Shadowhunters at Brocelind Plain as he did this, traveling to Lake Lyn, which he found out was the Mirror from Hodge Starkweather. He killed Jace at Lake Lyn in order to raise Raziel. When the angel is raised, the favor is actually owed to Clary, who had traveled to Lake Lyn and changed the runes without Valentine noticing. Raziel does not appreciate Valentine's hubris and kills him because he knows Valentine's motives are not worthy as he only wants glory for himself.

Endarkened Ones

Shadowhunter Group

Shadowhunters who drank from the Infernal Cup, either willingly or forced, who became a dark version of a Shadowhunter. Stronger and faster even than a common Shadowhunter. They all died when the Infernal Cup was destroyed.

The Iron Sisters

Shadowhunter Group

Weapons experts. Makers of seraph blades and Shadowhunter weapons, and those that mold adamas into steles, demon towers, and witchlights. They are the only Shadowhunters that know how to work the adamas into what is needed. The live in the Adamant Citadel. They bear orange decorative tattoos around their eyes and over their temples like a mask. There are makers, who shape the adamas for other sisters to carve.

Notable members:

Sister Cleophas - maker (Luke and Amatis' mother who became a Silent Sister - they never saw her again)

Sister Dolores

Sister Magdalena

The Silent Brothers

Shadowhunter Group

Archivists and librarians who use some of the most powerful runes ever made - warping their bodies and making them into some of the strongest, most feared demon hunters. They live in the Silent City and do not speak at all, communicating telepathically. Most have no longer have eyes and their mouths are sewn shut.

Notable members:

Brother Jeremiah - deceased

Brother Enoch

Brother Zachariah - the only Silent Brother to revert to being a Shadowhunter

Forsaken

Forsaken

While a single Mark on a mundane can kill them, putting several powerful Marks on them will create a Forsaken - a monster that is very powerful and entirely loyal to the person who created them.

Valentine plans to raise Raziel and ask that any Shadowhunters not loyal to him and not having drunk from the Mortal Cup be turned into Forsaken.

Chairman Meow

Animal

Magnus' cat

Church

Animal

Cat that lives at the New York Institute, recently stolen and taken to Los Angeles by Zachariah. He seems to like Zachariah, and Church doesn't like anyone.

Hugo

Animal

Hodge's pet raven.

It is revealed that Hugo is actually Hugin, who used to be one of Valentine's two pet ravens. The other was named Munin - meaning "thought" and "memory". Hodge uses Hugin to alert Valentine that he has the Mortal Cup.

It spies for Valentine on the people of Alicante, also working as a messenger between one of Valentine's Shadowhunters in the Clave, Malachi, and Valentine. He tells Valentine about Clary's ability and that she is planning something with the Clave for the battle at Brocelind Plain. Jace is able to follow Hugo to the tunnel where his father and fake Sebastian were meeting. He alerts Malachi to Clary's presence at the Hall but when Malachi kicks him, Hugo attacks Malachi. He causes him to fall over a bench and land throat first on a large shard of glass.

It will burn the evil out of the person stabbed, and if they are more darkness than light it will also kill them. Heosphoros and Phaeosphoros

The larger sword, Phaeosphoros (meaning light-bringer), was carried by Valentine Morgenstern and later by his son Sebastian Morgenstern. Heosphoros (meaning dawn-bringer) was carried by Jocelyn when she was married to Valentine, but she sold it to Diana Wrayburn's father before fleeing Idris. It was later found and carried by Valentine and Jocelyn's daughter Clary. It was destroyed when Clary used it to kill Sebastian Morgenstern.

The Infernal Cup
