Clockwork Prince Study Guide
Adele Starkweather
Shadowhunter
Granddaughter of Aloysius Starkweather.
She died when her first Marks were given to her. Her parents then went to Alicante and have no intention of returning to York.
Deceased
Agatha
Mundane
Cook at the London Institute. Mortal with the sight, from a family who has served Shadowhunters for generations. She was killed when Mortmain's clockwork creatures attacked the London Institute.
Deceased
Alexei de Quincey
Vampire
Head of London's most influential vampire clan. Member of the Pandemonium Club.
Charlotte and Henry are led to believe that de Quincey is the Magister. They find out that he has been murdering mundanes at parties in his home. His next party is infiltrated by Will and Tessa, disguised as Camille. When battle breaks out, he disappears and takes refuge with what remains of his clan. The Shadowhunters track him down and kill him and the rest of his clan but are mistaken that he is the Magister. In the meantime, the real Magister attacked the London Institute, knowing that most of the London Enclave were otherwise occupied.
Deceased
Aloysius Starkweather
Shadowhunter
Head of the York Institute. Grandfather of Adele Starkweather. May be developing dementia from age.
Aloysius' family has been in charge of the York Institute for generations. After the death of his granddaughter Adele, Adele's parents moved to ALicante and have no intention of returning to York. Aloysius is old-fashioned and prejudiced against Downworlders, he does not see any problem with taking spoils. He remembers the day that Axel Mortmain's adopted parents were killed.
Anne Shade
Warlock
Demon's mark: blue hair. Adopted mother of Axel Mortmain. Wife of John Shade.
She was killed when Shadowhunters raided her and John's home. According to the report, Shadowhunters believed that John was creating a weapon that could hurt Shadowhunters, but Anne did not have anything to do with it. Axel petitioned the Clave for reparations on behalf of his mother, but was denied. This probably spurred his hate of Shadowhunters.
Deceased
Axel Mortmain
Mundane
Mundane. Leader of the Pandemonium Club. Adopted son of warlocks John and Anne Shade.
After taking over his father's company and fortune, he quickly quadrupled his worth by trading in silk and spices - and opium. He then sold his ships and began producing mechanical devices for everything from the smallest pocket watches to large grandfather clocks. He was the previous employer of Richard Gray before RIchard and his wife went to America. When Nate came to England, he offered Nate a job and introduced him to the Pandemonium Club. He is questioned by Charlotte and Henry, pointing them toward de Quincey when in reality, Mortmain is the Magister in charge of the Pandemonium Club and Nate is unwaverinly faithful to him. He has paid the Dark Sisters to figure out how to bind demon energies to his clockwork creatures to create an army for himself. He intends to take over the British throne. He claims to know what Tessa is and to have been pivotal in her creation. He and his clockwork creatures attacked the London Institute after luring the majority of the Shadowhunters to de Quincey's hideaway and Jem and Will to fight the Dark Sisters. He intended to kidnap Tessa and steal the Pyxis with Nate's help. He succeeded in taking the Pyxis but Tessa faked her own death and he left her body behind when he was caught by Will. He currently believes that Tessa is dead.
Has not been seen since he attacked the London Institute, but they know that he has not stopped working against the Shadowhunters and still wants Tessa. They discover that he had been the adopted son of two warlocks who were killed by York Shadowhunters. He appealed to the Clave for reparations on behalf of his mother, but was denied which likely spurred his hatred of the Shadowhunters. He, through Nate, gains an informant in the London Institute when Nate convinces Jessamine that he loves her and secretly marries her. He also blackmails Benedict Lightwood, who has demon pox. If Benedict does what he wants, he gives Benedict the medicine that slows the demon pox progression. When Benedict is discovered, Mortmain stops giving him the medicine. He is also giving a rogue werewolf pack yin fen as a stimulant, buying up all the drug he can get his hands on so the werewolves will continue working to make his clockwork creatures.
Barbara Lightwood
Shadowhunter
Born Barbara Pangborn. Wife of Benedict Lightwood. Mother of Gideon, Tatiana, and Gabriel Lightwood. Sister of Silas Pangborn.
Benedict told his children that Barabara killed herself from grief after her brother Silas killed himself. He told them that Silas has fallen in love with his parabatai and that Granville Fairchild found out and told the Clave. Silas then killed himself from shame, leading to Barbara's death. In reality, Silas killed himself simply because he had fallen in love with his parabatai and could not bear to be separated from them, which he would have been. Though Barbara was understandably saddened by his death, she killed herself because Benedict had given her demon pox.
Deceased
Benedict Lightwood
Shadowhunter
Member of the London Enclave. Husband of Barbara Lightwood. Father of Gabriel, Tatiana, and Gideon Lightwood.
Has coveted the role of Head of the London Institute and is often belittling Charlotte, hoping to make her look incompentent to the other Shadowhunters. He fought when the Shadowhunters attacked de Quincey's party and when they attacked de Quincey's clan afterward. He killed de Quincey himself.
When Charlotte is questioned at a council meeting, he challenges her leadership of the London Institute and there are several of the Enclave that back him. During the two weeks that Charlotte is given to prove herself worthy of the role of Enclave head, they find out that Benedict is having parties were demons are in attendance (and he's fraternizing with them) but Nate Gray and Mortmain's clockwork creatures are also there. They find out that Benedict has demon pox, which he gave to his wife before she died, and that Mortmain is holding his medication hostage. Without it, the demon pox will progress more quickly. In addition, Jessamine tells them that to expose Benedict would be playing directly into Mortmain's hands. Mortmain wants Benedict in the Institute, but he eventually wants Benedict discovered - though they don't know why. When Benedict's lies and illness are told to his sons, Gideon leaves his father's house and begins to stay at the London Institute. In exchange for not telling the Clave what they've found out (yet), Benedict agrees to withdraw his claim and support Charlotte as head of the Institute.
Has demon pox.
Bridget Daly
Mundane
Mundane with the sight. New cook at the London Institute after Agnes' death. Has a penchant for singing sad and morbid songs at the top of her lungs, but is a pretty good cook.
Callida Fairchild
Shadowhunter
Member of the London Enclave. Aunt to Charlotte.
Camille Belcourt
Vampire
Member of de Quincey's clan in London. Magnus Bane's ex-lover.
Had fallen in love with a werewolf that de Quincey killed as punishment for fraternizing with the enemy. Camille has hated him ever since and helps the Shadowhunters infiltrate de Quincey's next party. She gives them information and jewelry for Tessa to use to assume Camille's form, even having Magnus Bane accompany them to the party. She has been in hiding since de Quincey's party.
Magnus stays in Camille's house while she is in hiding. She finally returns home and lies to him by saying she was in Paris when she was really in St. Petersburg with her human lover - who she later killed. They break up.
Cecily Herondale
Shadowhunter
Daughter of Edmund Herondale and his wife. Younger sister to Ella and Will Herondale.
Will finds out that she and their parents are staying at Mortmain's home in York - Ravenscar Manor. Charlotte has them watched by Ragnor Fell to make sure they are not being hurt until they can figure out why Axel has them in custody. Once they discover that Benedict Lightwood is in cahoots with Mortmain and he agrees to throw his support behind Charlotte leading the London Institute, Cecily shows up at the Institute to be trained as a Shadowhunter.
Charlotte Branwell
Shadowhunter
Head of the London Institute. Married to Henry Branwell, maiden name Charlotte Fairchild. Expecting her first child with Henry, a son. Daughter of Granville Fairchild.
Charlotte was given charge of the Institute after her father died. While technically she and Henry are both in charge, no one believes that Henry is actually involved in the running of the Institute. She is in charge of Will Herondale, Jem Carstairs, and Jessamine Lovelace - all underage Shadowhunters living at the Institute. When investigating the Pandemonium Club, she questions Mortmain and is led to believe that de Quincey is the Magister. She learns that de Quincey is killing mundanes at parties he throws and she arranges to infiltrate the party to obtain proof. They lose de Quincey but rescue Tessa's brother, Nate, who was the intended victim. She gathers the Enclave to track down what remained of de Quincey's clan after learning of their location from Nate. They killed de Quincey and his clan, later learning that she had been duped and Mortmain was the actual Magister and that the London Institute had been attacked, killing two of the servants: Thomas and Agatha.
Charlotte's leadership of the Insitute is questioned in front of the Council and Benedict challenges her claim. She and Henry are given two weeks to discover where Mortmain is hiding. They find out that Jessamine has betrayed the Institite, she has secretly married Nate Gray and has been passing information to him and to Mortmain about the Shadowhunters' activities. After looking in the reparations records, they discover that Axel Mortmain had been adopted by two warlocks, Anne and John Shade, which were killed by Shadowhunters. Mortmain requested reparations because he believed his mother's death to be unjust but was denied, which spurred his hatred of the Shadowhunters. They find out that he has hired Will's family to be caretakers for his parents home in York, Ravenscar Manor. They arrange a meeting with Nate Gray at an old warehouse where Nate has a giant clockwork creature working for him. Charlotte is attacked and passes out, but luckily Will destroys the creature but kills Nate in the process. She believes she will lose the Institute, but they then find out that Benedict Lightwood has also been working with Mortmain and also has demon pox. They meet with Benedict and blackmail him into withdrawing his claim. She is so happy to find out that Henry loves her (she didn't think he did).
Cyril Tanner
Mundane
Mundane with the sight. Brother of Thomas Tanner.
He comes to the Institute to work after his brother Thomas was killed by Mortmain's attack on the Institute.
Edmund Herondale
Ex-Shadowhunter
Father of Ella, Will, and Cecily Herondale.
Gave up being a Shadowhunter and was stripped of his Marks when he fell in love with a Mundane and chose to marry her. He did keep momentos of his life as a Shadowhunter, like the Pyxis that Will opened - leading to Ella's death. They lived in Wales, but after Ella's death and Will's disappearance, he began gambling and lost their house. He and his wife currently are working as caretakers for Mortmain's parents' house in York - Ravenscar Manor.
Elizabeth Gray
Mundane
Wife of Richard Gray, maiden name Elizabeth Moore. Mother of Tessa Gray. Foster mother of Nathaniel Gray who was actually the son of her sister, Helen Moore. The original owner of Tessa's clockwork angel necklace.
Her husband Richard worked for Mortmain when they lived in England and Mortmain introduced them to the Pandemonium Club. Something made them leave in the middle of the night, fleeing London for America and hiding from Mortmain. She died in a carriage accident with her husband when Tessa was very young. Before he dies, Nate reveals that Elizabeth was not his biological mother and that she was a Shadowhunter. Tessa cannot believe that is true, since neither Nate nor Aunt Helen were Shadowhunters.
Deceased
Ella Herondale
Shadowhunter
Daughter of Edmund Herondale and a mundane woman. Elder sister to Will and Cecily Herondale.
When Will was twelve, he opened a Pyxis in his father's study containing the demon Marbas, not knowing what the box was. When Marbas was released, Ella tried to protect Will. Marbas knocked her back with his tail and cursed Will that anyone who loved him would die, starting with Ella. That night Ella was fine and she and her brother believed it was an empty bluff, they did not tell their parents. When Will woke up the next morning, Ella was dead. He left his family that day, afraid of their dying for their love of him, and began to be casually cruel so others didn't learn to care about him. When Will found Marbas, he learned that the curse really was fake. Ella had died from the poison in Marbas' barbed tail.
Deceased
Frederick Ashdown
Shadowhunter
Member of the London Enclave.
Gabriel Lightwood
Shadowhunter
Member of the London Enclave. Son of Benedict and Barbara Lightwood. Brother of Gideon and Tatiana Lightwood.
Hates Will Herondale for an insult he believes Will gave his sister.
After the attack of the Institute, Consul Wayland requires Tessa and Sophie to be trained to fight. Gideon and Gabriel Lightwood are given that task. Tessa trains with Gabriel and she finds him to be a mostly patient and competent tutor. However, after a fight in with Gabriel tells them the story of Charlotte's father betraying Silas Pangborn, he says that Charlotte should not be in charge. Sophie hits him across the face and Gabriel leaves, he will not be coming back to train them. He attends his father's party with the clockwork creatures, demons, and Downworlders. After discovering Benedict's secret affliction, Charlotte, Tessa, and Will confront Benedict and tell his sons that Benedict has demon pox. Gideon leaves his father's house and comes to live at the Institute, but Gabriel stays with their father even after Gideon asks him to come.
George Penhallow
Shadowhunter
Member of the London Enclave.
Gideon Lightwood
Shadowhunter
Member of the London Enclave. Son of Benedict and Barbara Lightwood. Older brother of Tatiana and Gabriel Lightwood. In love with Sophie Turner.
He is called back from his training in the Madrid Institute by his father. When Benedict makes a claim for the London Institute, Gideon and Gabriel are told to train Tessa and Sophie. Gideon begins to admire Sophie and asks to see her when they are not training, even though she is a Mundane. He is not as loyal to his father as Gabriel, having seen the way other Shadowhunters live while he was in Madrid and realizing that his father is not a good person. He tells Sophie, who then tells Charlotte, that his father has demon pox. When Charlotte confronts Benedict, Gideon leaves his home and begins to live in the Institute. He asks Gabriel to come with him, but Gabriel decides to stay.
Gottshall
Mundane
Servant at the York Institute. His family has worked for the York Institute for hundreds of years.
Granville Fairchild
Shadowhunter
Father of Charlotte Branwell. Previous leader of the London Institute. Benedict told his children that Granville learned a secret about Silas Pangborn and told the Clave that he was breaking the Law. This lead to Silas' suicide and later, Silas' sister's (and Benedict's wife) suicide. In truth, Granville did find out about Silas' love for his parabatai but did not tell the Clave. They found out after Silas killed himself from Silas' suicide note. Benedict made this up so his children would not find out that Benedict had given her demon pox and that was the real reason she killed herself.
Deceased
Harriet Moore
Mundane
Aunt of Tessa. Sister of Elizabeth Gray. Birth mother of Nathaniel Gray, who was raised as Elizabeth and Richard's son since Helen was unmarried when she became pregnant and her fiancee died before they were married.
Raised her niece and nephew after the deaths of their parents. Died just before Tessa came to England. Nate revealed that he had sent Harriet poisoned chocolates so Tessa would have nothing to keep her in America.
Deceased
Henry Branwell
Shadowhunter
Shadowhunter and head of the London Institute. Married to Charlotte, who actually runs the Institute. Expecting his first child with Charlotte, a son. Son of Buford Branwell.
Henry loves to invent new things and to tinker with machines. Many of the other Shadowhunters don't take him seriously, especially since he is generally very focused on one of his interests. He went with Will to the Dark Sisters' house, ending with finding and rescuing Tessa Gray. He investigates Mortmain and the Magister with Charlotte, inadvertently telling Mortmain about the Pyxis. He was one of the Shadowhunters that found at de Quincey's party (it was his invention that malfunctioned and set de Quincey's house on fire) and he also helped track and kill the remainder of de Quincey's clan.
Creates an invention that can interrupt the clockwork creatures and stop them. When they go to confront Nate Gray at the abandoned warehouse, Will uses this invention to destroy Nate's giant automaton. The resulting explosion kills Nate and injures Will. Henry feels responsible for Will's injuries but without the invention, the automaton would have killed them all. He delighted to find out that Charlotte loves him back (he didn't think she did) and that she is pregnant.
Jem (James) Carstairs
Shadowhunter
Shadowhunter at the London Institute. Called by his Chinese name, Jian, by his mother. His late parents ran the Shanghai Institute. Parabatai of Will Herondale. Engaged to Tessa Gray. Plays the violin.
Came to live at the London Institute at the age of twelve after his parents were killed by the demon Yanluo. Jem was tortured by Yanluo and fed a highly addictive drug, which he cannot be weaned off him. If he stops taking the drug, he will die, though the drug is slowly killing him as well. He is one of the only people that Will cares about. He helped to investigate the Magister, taking part in the raid on de Quincey's party. He was attacked by automatons while showing Tessa his favorite place in London and was nearly killed. He and Will were left behind at the Institute while the adult Shadowhunters tracked de Quincey's clan, but they were lured away by Mortmain. He and Will went to stop the Dark Sisters from binding demon energies to the clockwork creatures, but found Mrs. Dark trying to resurrect her dead sister and realized they'd been duped. Jem took the carriage and one of the horses back to the Institute while Will took the other horse and rode ahead. Jem found Nate and several clockwork creatures stealing the Pyxis when he arrived back at the Institute and fought them just before Henry and Charlotte arrived back to help him. They discover that the automatons used Jem's blood from when he and Tessa were attacked to gain entrance to the Institute.
After being given two weeks to discover Mortmain's whereabouts, they find out about Mortmain's request for reparations and Jem travels with Tessa and Will to the York Institute. There they visit the Shade's house, Ravenscar Manor, and find Will's family living in it. He has to stop Will from running to the manor and getting his family (and himself) killed. He begins to show Tessa all over London and falls in love with her. When he finds Will in an ifrit den after returning to London from York, he gets very angry. He is sick of everyone only seeing him as sick and not a real man with needs and desires. He kisses Tessa then, but later regrets it because he thinks Tessa thinks less of him for his lack of control. But after going to confront Nate at the warehouse and Tessa nearly dies fighting Nate's giant automaton, Jem knows he cannot live without her. He proposes to her and she accepts. When the members of the Institute have a meeting to decide what they are going to do so Charlotte does not lose the Institute, Will brings up the symptoms of demon pox. Jem recognizes them from a report of Barbara Lightwood's autopsy that he had requested while at the Silent City to speak to Jessamine. He realizes that Barbara Lightwood had demon pox, likely given to her by her husband.
Jessamine (Jessie) Lovelace
Shadowhunter
Shadowhunter at the London Institute. Wife of Nathaniel Gray. Her parents died in a fire, leaving her orphaned.
Her parents had distanced themselves from the Clave and did not want Jessamine to have anything to do with being a Shadowhunter. As such, Jessie refuses to train and does not like to take part in Shadowhunter activities. She wants to marry and leave the Institute, a mundane would be best. She offers to move in with Tessa, but the offer goes no further than that. She dotes on Nate when he's sick, hoping that he may be the mundane that ferries her away (and he's handsome besides), and is very upset when Nate betrays the Shadowhunters. When Will and Jem leave the Institute and the automatons attack, Jessamine fights alongside Thomas to defend the Institute and those inside of it.
Though she fought with Thomas to protect the Institute from Nate and Mortmain's attack, she is quickly wooed again by Nate. She begins to sneak out to meet with him, even marrying Nate in secret. She gives Nate information about the Shadowhunters' investigation into Mortmain, which is then passed to Mortmain so he is able to stay ahead of the Enclave. When she is found out, Jessamine is questioned by the Mortal Sword and they find out that parts of her memory have been blocked by Mortmain. She is imprisoned in the Silent City, where she currently remains. She does agree to help Tessa and the others speak with Nate. She writes a letter to Nate and gives them instructions on where to meet him so Tessa can pretend to be her.

Warlock
Demon's mark: green skin. Husband of Anne Shade. Adopted father of Axel Mortmain.
Was a fan of working with cogs and wheels, enjoying making clockwork contraptions. The Shadowhunters in York believed he was creating a weapon that could kill them. They attacked the Shade's home, killing John and his wife Anne in the process. Axel Mortmain later requested reparations on behalf of his mother's death since he believed that it was unjust, but was denied. The pocketwatch that Axel would like Tessa to use likely belonged to his father.

Will Herondale seeks him out there, asking for Magnus' help.
He agrees to help Will, researching different blue demons and summoning them to be questioned. When Will discovers the name of the demon that cursed him, Magnus is able to call the demon and they find out that the curse was never real. When Will was twelve, he opened the Pyxis and released Marbas - not realizing what the Pyxis was. Marbas cursed Will that anyone who loved him would die starting with his older sister. The next morning, Will's older sister Ella was dead in a gruesome way. This led to Will leaving his family and going to the Institute where he was cruel to people on purpose so they would not love him. After falling in love with Tessa, Will begins to search for Marbas and a way to break the curse. He spots Marbas at a party at Benedict Lightwood's house and chases him down. When Marbas bites Will, one of his teeth gets stuck in Will's arm. Will and Magnus use the tooth to summon Marbas who reveals that the curse was never real. Ella died because Marbas had hit her with his barbed tail and poisoned her. Magnus kills him before banishing him.

He travels to London and instead is given a job and is introduced to the Pandemonium Club. He became an acolyte of Mortmain, also known as the Magister. Because the Magister wanted Tessa, Nate mailed poisoned chocolates to his aunt, which killed her, and asked Tessa to join him in England - sending her a steamer ship ticket. When Tessa escaped the Dark Sisters, Nate was given to de Quincey as punishment, he would have been killed if the Shadowhunters hadn't saved him. But he betrayed them, giving them false information about de Quincey and luring all the adult Shadowhunters away from the Institute, as well as Jem and Will when they were left behind. When the automatons attacked the Institute, Nate helped the automatons steal the Pyxis and has not been seen since.
Sophie and Tessa discover that Jessamine has been in communication with Nate, sneaking out to give him information on the Shadowhunters' investigation into Mortmain. He even married Jessamine. Tessa disguises herself as Jessamine and meets Nate at Benedict Lightwood's party where she discovers that Benedict is in league with Mortmain. After asking Jessamine for help, they arrange a meeting with Nate in an old warehouse to find out where Mortmain is hiding. But Nate was tipped off in Jessie's letter and brought a giant clockwork creature with him. When the Dark SIsters tell Tessa that she is to be married to someone named the Magister, Tessa tries to escape but is stopped. She is rescued by Will and the other Shadowhunters who let her stay in the Institute. She helps them to investigate the Pandemonium Club, which the Dark Sisters were a part of and the Magister is in charge of, as well as the disappearance of her brother. She agrees to attend a party dressed as Camille Belcourt to investigate the vampire de Quincey, who they believe is the Magister and has been breaking Clave law. She grows quite close to Jem Carstairs as he shows her around London. She agrees to continue to investigate Mortmain with the Institute. After finding out that Mortmain was adopted by warlock parents who were killed by the Clave, Tessa goes with Jem and Will to York to speak to the Enclave that killed them. They find out that Will's family is living in Ravenscar Manor, Mortmain's parents house. Jem and Tessa have to convince him to leave his family without speaking to them and they later find him at an ifrit den. He is very sweet to Tessa then, but she doesn't let herself be swayed. Jem is dismayed at finding Will and in his anger, lashes out. He is sick everyone thinking he is too sick to be a real man. He kisses Tessa and she kisses him back, but afterward she thinks Jem will think less of her for being so wonton. After finding out that Jessamine has been meeting with Nate, Tessa agrees to disguise herself as Jessamine and go to their next meeting at a party at Benedict Lightwoods house. While there, she and Will have a real moment on the balcony but are interrupted by Magnus, who takes Tessa back to the Institute. Later, Tessa and Jem convince Jessie to help arrange another meeting with Nate. At that meeting, Nate is tipped off that it is a trap and brings a giant automaton with him. The automaton nearly kills Tessa and Nate tells her that they are not really siblings. He tells her that her mom Elizabeth was a Shadowhunter but that doesn't make sense to Tessa. If Elizabeth was, then Harriet and Nate would also be Shadowhunters. When Will destroys the automaton, he covers Tessa's body with his own. He saves Tessa's life but is badly hurt in the process. Nate dies from the explosion and Tessa passes out not to wake for several days. In those days, she snuggles up to Will who then sneaks away from the infirmary. Once Tessa is back on her feet, Jem tells her that he is in love with her. He proposes to her and she accepts, trying not to think about Will. Will says he needs to speak with her after returning from wandering the streets again, but first they make a visit to Benedict Lightwood, who they blackmail into supporting Charlotte's claim as head of the London Enclave. Once they return to the Institute, Will tells her the truth about his curse and that he loves her. But she is already engaged to his parabatai.
Thomas Tanner
Mundane
Employee at the London Institute. Mortal with the sight, from a family who has served Shadowhunters for generations. In love with Sophie.
Thomas was raised at an Institute as his family worked there and was trained with the Shadowhunters. He went with Will and Henry to the Dark Sisters' house, finding and rescuing Tessa. He defended the Institute against Mortmain's clockwork creatures when they attacked the London Institute, with Jessamine's help. He eventually yelled at Jessamine to run as he made a last stand and was killed by Mortmain's clockwork creatures. Will arrived at the Institute and was with Thomas when he died.
Deceased
Victor Whitelaw
Shadowhunter
Inquisitor of the Clave.
Will (William) Herondale
Shadowhunter
Shadowhunter at the London Institute. Son of Edmund Herondale, a Shadowhunter that left the Clave and a mundane who live in Wales. Brother to Ella and Cecily Herondale. Parabatai to Jem Carstairs. In love with Tessa Gray.
Will showed up at the Institute when he was twelve, alone and saying he had nowhere else to go. He is cold and surly, often painting the worst picture of himself possible. He doesn't let anyone get close to him except for Jem. He is the Shadowhunter that rescues Tessa from the Dark Sisters' house, finding her closed in a third story room. He kills Mrs. Black as they try to escape. Later, he accompanies Tessa to de Quincey's party to find evidence against de Quincey and fights when the Shadowhunters come in. He and Jem were left behind at the Institute while the adult Shadowhunters tracked de Quincey's clan, but they were lured away by Mortmain. He and Jem went to stop the Dark Sisters from binding demon energies to the clockwork creatures, but found Mrs. Dark trying to resurrect her dead sister and realized they'd been duped. Jem took the carriage and one of the horses back to the Institute while Will took the other horse and rode ahead. Will was with Thomas as he died and then went on to find Tessa. He arrived at the Sanctuary to find Mortmain kneeling next to Tessa's dead body. He attacked Mortmain, severing a button from his coat, but Mortmain disappeared uninjured. When Will held Tessa, he realized that she was alive. Though the two of them had grown quite close and even kissed once, he begins to push her away from him and avoid her when able.
Will goes to Magnus for help. He reveals that just before he came to the Institute, he opened a Pyxis in his father's study because he didn't know what it was. He released a demon that cursed him. Anyone who loves Will is doomed to die because of their love. It's the reason he left his family and why he is so mean to people, so they don't care for him. But he's in love with Tessa and needs to find a way to break the curse. They begin to track down demons who may have cursed Will and question them. In the meantime, the Institute finds out that Axel Mortmain had been adopted by warlock parents who were killed by the Clave. Mortmain had requested and been denied reparations for his mother's death. Will travels with Jem and Tessa to speak to the York Institute where Mortmain's parents were killed. In visiting their home of Ravenscar Manor, Will discovers that his family is living there. He has to be convinced to leave by Jem so that he and his family are not killed. Afterward, he goes to an ifrit den just to be able to forget and damages his relationship to Jem. When Sophie finds out that Jessie has been secretly meeting with Nate Gray and planned to attend Benedict Lightwood's party to see him, Will and Tessa decide to go instead. While there, they kiss on the balcony and Will almost tells her the truth but is interrupted by Magnus. As Magnus gets them out of the party, Will sees the demon that cursed him and chases the demon down. The demon bites him and leaves a tooth in Will's arm. Will takes the tooth to Magnus so they can summon the demon but it will take a few days to prepare. In the meantime, Will and the others plan to confront Nate at an abandoned warehouse. Nate brings an automaton creature that nearly kills them, but WIll is able to destroy the automaton. He gets badly injured while protecting Tessa from the blast, which kills Nate. Tessa snuggles up to him while they recover and he believes she might care for him too. He goes back to Magnus that night and they summon the demon Marbas, who tells Will that Ella died from the poison in his barbed tail. The curse was never real. Will plans to tell Tessa as soon as possible of his feelings and the truth about the curse, but first they must confront and blackmail Benedict Lightwood so he withdraws his claim on the Institute. By the time that is done, Tessa is already engaged to Jem.
Woolsey Scott
Werewolf
Head of the London werewolf pack.
He became head of the pack after his brother was killed by de Quincey for being Camille's lover. Woolsey inherited the pack, which is not usually how a pack leader is made, so that he could avenge his brother. He no longer needs to since the Shadowhunters killed de Quincey. He tells them that there is a rogue pack of werewolves being used by Mortmain. They seem to be using yin fen as a stimulant though they don't know why.
Yanluo
Demon
Demon who killed Jem's parents as revenge after Jem's mother destroyed its nest and offspring. The demon tortured Jem for days before he was rescued, forcing him to injest a demon drug that left him addicted. If he stops using the drug, even if he is slowly weaned off, he will die, though the drug is slowly killing him.

It was saved by Jem from Mrs. Dark, who planned on sacrificing the cat in some way.
