Adaon
Unseelie Faerie
Prince of the Unseelie Court and one of the Unseelie King's fifty sons. The son that Kieran likes the most. He gave Kieran Windspear.
The Seelie Queen wants to put Adaon forward as the next Unseelie King after the current Unseelie King is killed. Kieran meets with Adaon to ask if Adaon would be willing to take the throne but Prince Erec crashes their meeting and threatens Cristina's life so Kieran kills him. Adaon tells Kieran to get somewhere safe.
Alec (Alexander) Lightwood
Shadowhunter
Parabatai and foster brother to Jace. Brother to Isabelle and the late Max. Eldest child of Robert and Maryse. Boyfriend of Magnus Bane. Hero of the Dark War. Father of Max, a warlock child he adopted with Magnus and was named after his brother, and Rafe, an orphaned Warlock child. One of the leaders of the Downworlder-Shadowhunter Alliance.
Alec, Magnus, and their children come to the London Institute after Diana and the Blackthorns were forced to flee the L.A. Institute and Portaled to London. He becomes the temporary head of the London Institute. He and Magnus help the Blackthorns investigate Malcolm and Annabel, try to find ways to stop the Cohort, and end the Cold Peace. When Mannan's Seven are called to find the Black Volume, Alec takes Max, Rafe, and Tavvy to Alicante while the others remain in London. He is waiting in London when the others finally arrive. When Magnus collapses before the Council meeting, Alec tells Robert and Kit that Magnus has been easily draining himself recently. They were going to speak to the Spiral Labyrinth about it, but there hasn't been the time. While Alec stays with Magnus, Robert attends the Clave meeting and is subsequently killed by Annabel.
Aline Penhallow
Shadowhunter
Daughter of Patrick and Jia Penhallow. Wife of Helen Blackthorn. Together, they 'study the wards' at Wrangel Island - a barely veiled punishment of Helen's after the Dark War for being half-faerie. Both Jia Penhallow (Consul and Aline's mother) and Robert Lightwood (Inquisitor) insist it is also for Helen's protection.
Jia reveals that Helen and Aline had noticed on the ward maps black spots of dark magic. Jia investigated those areas but found nothing wrong. Later, Diana finds the blight in one of those areas. Aline and Helen are brought to the Clave meeting to testify about the blight and the black spots, Diana uses the Wild Hunt to bring them quickly. Unfortunately, they are not able to testify because Annabel's testimony turns deadly.
Andrew Blackthorn
Shadowhunter
Previous head of the Los Angeles Institute. Father of the Blackthorn children. Brother of Arthur Blackthorn.
Was once kidnapped by the faeries with his brother Arthur and held in the Seelie Court. In that time, he fell in love with and had two children, Helen and Mark, with a Seelie Princess named Nerissa. When he returned home, he married a Shadowhunter, Eleanor. When Mark and Helen were brought to his doorstep after their mother died Eleanor accepted them as her own children. He and Eleanor eventually had Julian, Livvy, Ty, Dru, and Tavvy before Eleanor died.
When Sebastian attacks the Los Angeles Institute, Andrew is forced to drink from the Infernal Cup and become Endarkened. His son Julian killed Andrew when the Endarkened attacked the Gard in Alicante.
Deceased
Annabel Blackthorn
Shadowhunter
Member of the Blackthorn family who lived before it was legal for Shadowhunters and Downworlders to be in a relationship. She fell in love with Malcolm Fade and the two were going to run away together, but her family found out and had her sent to the Iron Citadel and become an Iron Sister to avoid their union. At least, that's what they told everyone. In reality, they walled Annabel up in an iron cell and let her die. Malcolm lived for centuries believing that Annabel was an Iron Sister before figuring out the truth - thanks to Edgar Allen Poe's poem Annabel Lee (Poe had heard Annabel's real story from Downworlders). Malcolm went to the Unseelie King and asked if there was a way to bring Annabel back from the dead, which he has tried to do ever since learning the truth. He was killed by Emma before he succeeded.
Malcolm came back from the dead and immdediately threatened to overwhelm coastlines everywhere with sea demons if he didn't get a Blackthorn to raise Annabel with. Arthur sent the children to safety but gave himself over to Malcolm and Malcolm was able to use his blood to raise Annabel from the dead. Annabel's mind had been awake since Malcolm killed Emma's parents and for the last five years she lived in a prison made from her own body. Feeling betrayed (more than once) by Malcolm, she killed him when she was raised. She took the Black Volume and disappeared. She discovered that Julian was looking for the Black Volume and tried to warn him away, but it didn't stop him. Ty, believing he'd found the secret way that Annabel and Malcolm would correspond, send a letter to Annabel that convinced her to trust Julian. She even saves the Blackthorns from Mannan's Riders. Julian asked her to testify to the Clave about what Malcolm did and that she was the one that killed him. He assured her that he could convince the Shadowhunters to give her Blackthorn Manor in exchange for the wrongs that the Clave did to her when they tortured her and allowed her family to kill her without punishment. Annabel agreed and told Julian she would give him the Black Volume if his promise was fulfilled. But the Clave, lead by the Cohort, called Annabel filthy names and threw things at her. It was her trial all over again and it broke what was left of her mind. She turned on them with the Mortal Sword that she was holding during her questioning - killing Robert Lightwood. Emma blocked her from killing Julian, which broke the Mortal Sword, but Annabel used the shards to kill Livvy before disappearing in a plume of smoke showing the Unseelie King's emblem.
Raised from the Dead
Anselm Nightshade
Vampire
Vampire Representive on the Shadowhunter Council. Leader of the Los Angeles clan.
He opens a pizza parlor which Emma is surprised has a surprisingly good sauce recipe. Julian realizes that Nightshade is putting addictive powders in the sauce, made from dark magic. When Julian is questioned about the investigation into Malcolm and the thirteen murders, he insists that Arthur was not part of the investigation much because he was busy investigating Nightshade instead. Nightshade is arrested for using dark magic and especially on mundanes.
In jail
Arthur Blackthorn
Shadowhunter
Brother of Andrew Blackthorn. Uncle to the Blackthorn children. Head of the Los Angeles Institute.
Was once kidnapped by the faeries with his brother Andrew and held in the Seelie Court. While Andrew fell in love with a Seelie Princess named Nerissa and had two children, Arthur had a much harder time and was tortured by the Fair Folk. His mental state was never particularly stable afterward.
He was at the London Institute when it was attacked, but the Shadowhunters were able to get away. Agreed to travel to the Los Angeles to run the Institute and raise his nieces and nephews. However, after the attack his mind broke completely. He was unable to differentiate present from past the majority of the time, heard voices that he claimed to only be able to stop if he drew blood, and potentially had visions. Although he technically lead the Institute, he actually locked himself in his attic office while his nephew Julian ran the Institute and raised his siblings. Julian is able to get a tonic from Malcolm that allows Arthur to think quickly for a small amount of time, though Julian uses it as little as possible since it leaves Arthur with debilitating headaches. Arthur is present when the Faerie Convoy arrives with Mark, agreeing to let the Shadowhunters investigate the murders so Mark can leave the Wild Hunt and return to his family. Arthur does very little to assist the investigation, though he does make occassional appearances when necessary. When the investigation is solved and Robert Lightwood questions Arthur about why he was not more involved with the investigation, Julian reveals that the vampire representative to the Council, Anselm Nightshade, has been using dark magic in his L.A. pizza parlor recipes. Julian lies and says that Arthur was investigating Nightshade while the others investigated Malcolm.
When Malcolm came back from the dead, he came to the Institute and demanded that the Shadowhunters turn over a Blackthorn or else coastlines everywhere would be attacked by sea demons. Arthur took the Blackthorn children and sent them away from Los Angeles. Diana was able to have Catarina open an emergency Portal to London and she went with the kids and Kit to London. Arthur stayed behind. Once his nieces and nephews were safe, Arthur went to the convergence. He gave himself to Malcolm, who transported Arthur to Cornwall and killed him to raise Annabel. Julian saw this happen through the Seelie Queen's scrying glass. Before he died, he told a story of how Cortana was broken - which Emma believes was his confusion since Cortana has never been broken.
Deceased
Ash
Faerie
Young faerie that Dru meets when she touches the gold artifact in Jaime's bag. Dru does not know who or where Ash is, but he recognized her as a Shadowhunter. He asked her if she had been sent by his mother and if his mother was trying to find him. Dru didn't have any answers for him and was taken back to her own room before asking any questions of her own.
Barnabas Hale
Warlock
Warlock in charge of the Los Angeles Shadow Market. Barnabas believes that Magnus has sold out his own people for the Shadowhunters, calling Magnus the Shadowhunters' pet. In addition, after Malcolm's death (which he blames on the Shadowhunters but does not care about why Barnabas was killed) he banned any Shadowhunters from the Shadow Market in L.A. When Kit uses his name at the London Shadow Market, Barnabas shows up and incites a riot. The Shadowhunters are nearly killed.
Cameron Ashdown
Shadowhunter
Member of the Los Angeles conclave who Emma has dated and broken up with several times.
Catarina Loss
Warlock
Demon mark: dark blue skin and white hair.
Diana works with Catarina to investigate the thirteen murders around Los Angeles. With Catarina's help, Diana discovers Malcolm's history with Annabel Blackthorn and realizes that he is behind the murders.
Diana explains to Gwyn that Catarina was one of the first people to know she was transgender, discovering it after Diana had been living in Thailand as a woman with her but the two of them were injured in a fight and Catarina tried to save them. Instead of thinking less of Diana, Catarina explained the concept of being trans and helped Diana receive mundane treatment. She continues to get Diana's medication for her.
Clary (Clarissa) Fairchild
Shadowhunter
Raised as Clary Fray. Daughter of Jocelyn Fray (previously Fairchild) and Valentine Morgenstern. Stepdaughter of Luke Garoway. Sister of Jonathan (also known as Sebastian). Best friend and parabatai of Simon Lovelace. Dating Jace Herondale. Hero of the Mortal War and the Dark War. Head of the New York Institute with Jace Morgenstern.
A friend of Emma, she was at Isabelle and Simon's engagement party when Magnus was informed of necromantic activity in Los Angeles. She, Jace, Magnus, Alec, and Robert left the party and learned the truth about Malcolm and how the L.A. Institute investigated for the faeries to have Mark returned to them. Both she and Jace argue in favor of the Blackthorns receiving no penalty.
Clary and Jace are being sent on a secret mission to Faerie to discover if Sebastian left a weapon there before he died. At the L.A. Institute, Clary tells Emma that she's been having dreams again like she did during the Dark War. She believes that she is going to die soon but has not told anyone but Emma. Nene confirms to Emma and Julian that Jace and Clary made it to Faerie, but they have not returned yet.
Cristina Mendoza Rosales
Shadowhunter
Shadowhunter originally from the Institute in Mexico City, also called the D.F. for Distrito Federal. Staying at the Los Angeles Institute during her travel year. Whle in school, studied the Cold Peace and its ramifications extensively. Ex-girlfriend of Diego Rocio Rosales, the two have rekindled their relationship. Torn between Diego and Mark.
Her uncle was the previously head of the Institute during the Dark War but her mother became the head after Cristina's uncle was killed in the Dark War. Cristina and her family were sent away from the Institute during the Dark War for their protection. Cristina was dating a member of the D.F. conclave, Perfect Diego, and scheduled to bond Diego's brother, Jaime, as parabatai when she overheard Jaime talking about how their family would use their influence over Cristina to take control of the Institute from Cristina's mother. Cristina left the Institute to go to L.A. without telling either of them, refusing to take Diego's calls. During the investigation into the murders, which Cristina insists on being involved in, Diego arrives in L.A. to investigate for the Centurions. He explains to Cristina that he and Jaime were not plotting against her together, just Jaime, and Diego was going to try to convince her not to become is parabatai. Diego insists that he loves her and that he came to L.A. in part to make sure she was okay. Diego helps the rest of the Institute to investigate the murders, arguing in the Blackthorns favor when the investigation is done so they are not punished. In this time, she grows quite close to Mark and helps him to acclimatize back to to life outside of the Wild Hunt and is torn between her growing feelings for Mark and Diego's insistence that he loves her.
When Mark is told that Kieran is going to be executed, Cristina, Julian, and Emma follow him into Faerie to save Kieran. THe phouka at the gate tells Cristina that she will find a chance to end the Cold Peace while in Faerie. They're able to get Kieran and take him to the Seelie Court, but not before Mark and Cristina have a binding put on them so they cannot be too far away from each other. While in Faerie, the Seelie Queen makes them a bargain. The Unseelie King has a member of her Court held hostage and she needs the Black Volume to get the hostage back. In addition, she does not want the King to have the book and continue to create blight throughout Faerie. She will ally with the Shadowhunters against the Unseelie King, effectively ending the Cold Peace, if they give her the Black Volume. After returning to the mortal world, Cristina and Mark struggle to find a way to break their binding, which Magnus eventually does. She stays in London instead of going to Cornwall because she cannot be too far from Mark and she and Kieran begin to get to know each other. She and the others help Emma to fight Mannan's Riders, but it is Annabel who saves them. Dru facilitates a secret meeting between Cristina and Jaime during which Jaime tells Cristina the truth about his family, Diego and Zara, and why he has gone into hiding. He does not stay, but tells Cristina he wants to help fight the Cohort when it's time. Cristina goes with the Blackthorns to Alicante so Annabel and Kieran can testify. Seeing the Cohort in person, she gets nervous for Kieran's safety. She asks Diego to take Kieran somewhere safe after his testimony and Diego agrees. When the meeting becomes violent, Diego takes Kieran to the Scholomance though Kieran has not yet testified.
Dane Larkspear
Shadowhunter
Centurion originally from the Atlanta Institute. Twin to Samantha. Very prejudiced against Downworlders. Part of the group sent to the Los Angeles Institute to search for Malcolm Fade's body and the Black Volume of the Dead.
Dearborn
Shadowhunter
Ancestor of Horace and Zara Dearborn. Inquisitor of the Clave when Annabel was punished for her relationship with Malcolm. He questioned Annabel, tortured her, and then had her turned over to the Iron Sisters. He allowed Annabel to go home to say goodbye to her family before entering the Iron Citadel, but Annabel was killed by her family. Dearborn did not punish Annabel's family for killing her because he did not want Malcolm to learn the truth and stop working with the Shadowhunters.
Diana Wrayburn
Shadowhunter
Child of Aaron and Lissa Wrayburn. Sister of Aria. Dating Gwyn ap Nudd of the Wild Hunt. Part of the Los Angeles conclave who is employed as the Blackthorn's tutor, though she does not live at the Institute.
Julian has asked her to take over the Institute from Arthur, but she refuses to do so - though she won't give any reasons. She helps the Blackthorn children investigate the murders and is one of the few Shadowhunters to know that Mark is at the Institute. Though she helps, she is often off doing mysterious things that she does not tell the others about. Julian knows that she has secrets about her past that he does not know about, but he trusts her. She gets help from her friend Catarina Loss and discovers that Malcolm is behind the murders around the same time as the Blackthorns, arriving at the convergence while Tavvy is chained to the table. She confronts Malcolm and learns the truth of his past while the others hide. She fights with them against Malcolm's necromantic Followers.
Diana is at the Los Angeles Institute when Malcolm threatens it an demands the blood of a Blackthorn. She contacts her friend Catarina Loss, who opens an emergency Portal to London. Diana takes the Blackthorns and Kit through the Portal, Arthur does not come with them. Gwyn is quite taken with Diana and gives her an acorn that will summon Gwyn to her side when broken. Diana gives the acorn to Mark. When Mannan's Seven is called to hunt down the Blackthorns and the Black Volume, Mark breaks the acorn and asks Gwyn to find Ty, Livvy, and Kit. Gwyn does so, grabbing Diana on the way and the two of them arrive before anyone is seriously hurt. Gwyn tells Mannan's Riders that the Blackthorn children are under his protection. Diana also speaks to Jia about her concerns about the Cohort and discovers that the blight has broken from Faerie and entered Brocelind Plain. Jia explains that Helen and Aline had seen spots of dark magic on the ward maps where the blight has entered, Diana collects them with the Wild Hunt so that Aline and Helen can testify with Kieran and Annabel. She allows Gwyn to court her and is honest with him about why she will not apply to be head of the Los Angeles Institute and why she does not let people get close - because she is transgender. She was born David and had to live as David while in public, but at home her family accepted her. When her sister Aria went to live in Thailand, Diana went with her and adopted the name Diana after their father's weapons shop: Diana's Arrow. Diana lived as a woman in Thailand, where she was introduced to Catarina Loss. Diana and Aria went to fight revenants and were both grievously injured. Aria died, but Catarina was able to save Diana's life. She discovered Diana's secret in the process but did not spurn her. Instead, Catarina told her about what it means to be transgender and helped Diana receive mundane treatment. Diana lived as a mundane for years. Her family had told the Clave that David died in the revenant attack instead of Aria. Diana was afraid that the Clave would learn the truth and did not allow her parents to visit her in the mundane world, she regretted that after they died. But during the Dark War, Diana decided to come home and be a Shadowhunter. There was so much chaos that she introduced herself as Lissa and Aaron Wrayburn's child, but gave the name Diana instead of Aria and no one seemed to notice. She has lived that way, hiding in plain sight, ever since.

Cristina left the Institute to go to L.A. without telling either of them, refusing to take Diego's calls. During the Institute's investigation into the murders, Diego arrived in L.A. to investigate for the Centurions.
When Centurions come to stay at the Los Angeles Institute to search for Malcolm and the Black Volume, Cristina discovers that Diego is engaged to Zara Dearborn. In fact, he had tried to break up with her but Zara refused and reminded him of why they are engaged in the first place and now he can't end their relationship. When Jaime arrives at the London Institute and secretly speaks to Cristina, he explains that the Dearborns are blackmailing his family. They have an heirloom that was given to them by the faeries that was not turned in at the beginning of the Cold Peace. The Dearborns found out and want to use the heirloom, which would be disastrous. They told the Dearborns that only a Rosales can use the heirloom, which led to Zara becoming engaged to Diego so that she could become a Rosales herself and use the heirloom. Before that could happen, Jaime took the heirloom and disappeared with it. He has been on the run since, trying to figure out how the heirloom works and keep it out of the Dearborns hands. Diego does not love Zara, nor does he want to marry her, he is only doing so to protect is family. When Kieran is set to testify, Cristina reaches out to Diego. She was afraid of what the Cohort would do after Kieran's testimony and asked Diego to take him somewhere safe to protect him. When Annabel testified and the meeting devolved into chaos, Diego made his way to Kieran and took him to the Scholomance to hide before Kieran was able to give his testimony.

Dru is taken to the London Institute with her siblings when Malcolm threatens them and begins to feel like nothing more than a servant and convenient babysitter. When Jaime shows up the Institute, she is charmed by him and helps him hide until he can speak to Cristina alone. She helps to facilitate their meeting. After Jaime is supposed to have left, she finds his duffel bag in her room. Spotting something gold at the bottom, she touches the heirloom and is transported to an underground room. There is a faerie boy about her age there who asks her a whole barrage of questions she is too stunned to attempt to answer. Shadowhunter
Daughter of the late John Carstairs and his wife. Carries the sword Cortana. Best friend and parabatai of Julian Blackthorn, who she is in love with. Lives at the Los Angeles Institute. Said to be the best Shadowhunter of her generation. No longer fake dating Mark.
Emma's parents went out to investigate a demon attack the day that Sebastian attacked the Los Angeles Institute, and left Emma was at the Institute. Her parents were murdered the same day. The Clave has always attributed their death to Sebastian, but Emma does not believe that's true and has quietly investigated on her own since they died. She is given a tip by Johnny Rook that murders happening to faeries in Los Angeles match the description of her parents' murders, she investigates without the Clave's permission. Mark accidentally tells Cristina about faerie secrets, leading to a jealous Kieran tattling and Mark receiving a punishment of twenty lashes. Julian takes the punishment for him, but then Emma takes the majority of the punishment for Julian. It could have killed her but it does not. During the investigation, Julian is shot by a poisoned crossbow bolt and nearly dies, but Emma is able to draw an iratze that glows a little bit and feels painful when it's applied and saves his life. After finding the Followers and Casper Sterling, Emma and the others discover that Malcolm is the one behind the murders (he's been working with the Unseelie faerie Iarlath). When they confront him, Malcolm reveals that it is because Emma is in love with Julian that the parabatai bond made a more powerful rune and saved his life. Jem later unknowingly confirms this, telling Emma that when parabatai fall in love, they start to develop magical powers that made them go mad. They eventually kill their loved ones before dying themselves. Emma forces herself to end things with Julian, pretending to date Mark to drive Julian away. Emma kills Malcolm in the convergence by letting him get swept into the ocean and eaten by sea demons. He had the Black Volume of the Dead when he went into the water. After Malcolm dies, the protections he placed on Johnny Rook's home dissolved. Johnny is killed by Mantid demons but Emma is able to get to the house in time to save Kit. Jem and Tessa reveal that Kit is not really Kit Rook, but Christopher Herondale.
When Mark is told that Kieran is going to be executed, Cristina, Julian, and Emma follow him into Faerie to save Kieran. The phouka at the gate tells Emma that she will see the face of someone she has loved and lost while in Faerie. They're able to get Kieran and take him to the Seelie Court, but not before Emma is chosen to fight oen of the Unseelie King's knights. When she takes his helmet off, he wears the face of Emma's father. It's a glamour, but it is very jarring. Emma goes with Julian to Malcolm Fade's house in Cornwall to see if they can find where Annabel is hiding. While there, they find a bunch of Malcolm's journals and read them. She also realizes that Julian is still in love with her. Mannan's Riders come to attack them, when Julian and Emma fight them Emma is able to kill one of the Riders. It is the first time in history one of the Riders was killed. The other Riders retreat, as do the ones attacking in London. After the attack, Julian and Emma confess their feelings for each other remain the same and tell each other what they've learned about the parabatai curse. Magnus takes them back to London, where they fight Mannan's Riders again but are saved by Annabel. Afterward, Magnus Portals everyone to Alicante. Emma and Julian explain their situation to Robert Lightwood, who agrees to help them by exiling Emma to a certain degree, which should delay the curse. Unfortunately, when Annabel is attacked during her testimony, she uses the Mortal Sword to kill Robert Lightwood. Annabel turns the Sword on Julian, but Emma uses Cortana to deflect her swing and Cortana breaks the Mortal Sword. Annabel uses the shards to kill Livvy before disappearing.

Felix Blackthorn
Shadowhunter
Father of Annabel Blackthorn. Head of the Cornwall Institute when he was alive.
He took Malcolm Fade as a ward when Malcolm was young, but was cruel to Malcolm since he thought Downworlders were a lesser group than Shadowhunters. When he learned that Malcolm and Annabel were in a relationship, he threw Annabel out of the house. After attempting to steal the Black Volume from the Cornwall Institute, both Malcolm and Annabel were imprisoned in the Silent City. Annabel was tortured and given the punishment of joining the Iron Sisters. She was allowed to return home to say goodbye to her family but while she was there, her family killed her and hid her body. Gwyn is there when Julian takes Mark's place under the whip, and then when Emma takes Julian's place.
Gwyn arrives at the Los Angeles Institute to tell Mark that Kieran has been imprisoned by his father and is scheduled to be executed. The Wild Hunt was forced to take an oath not to interfere, so Gwyn wants Mark to save Kieran instead. Gwyn is introduced to Diana for the first time and is taken with her, he gives her an acorn that will summon him if broken. Mark later uses that acorn to ask Gwyn to save Livvy, Ty, and Kit from Mannan's Riders. Gwyn is hesitant, but convinced to do it when he is told that everyone will believe he has sided with the Unseelie King if he does not. Gwyn has Diana come with him to save the Blackthorn kids, telling the Riders that the Blackthorns are under his protection, but he is saved from fighting when the Riders feel their brother die and retreat. Later, Diana explains to Gwyn about her past and why she does not apply to lead the Los Angeles Institute. It doesn't bother Gwyn at all.

She gets to speak to her siblings once a week via video call but she is not allowed to visit the Institute, nor are they allowed to see her on Wrangel Island. They have not seen Helen since her wedding to Aline.
Jia tells Diana that Helen and Aline saw dark spots on the ward maps in Wrangel Island before the blight showed up in those spots. Has a soft spot for Mark Blackthorn, who he saw during the Dark War just after Mark was taken by the Wild Hunt. He gave Mark a witchlight and encouraged him to stay strong. He was at Isabelle and Simon's engagement party when Magnus was informed of necromantic activity in Los Angeles. He, Clary, Magnus, Alec, and Robert left the party and learned the truth about Malcolm and how the L.A. Institute investigated for the faeries to have Mark returned to them. Both he and Clary argue in favor of the Blackthorns receiving no penalty.
He is happy to hear that he has a family member by blood in Kit, but is not able to stay to get to know him. Clary and Jace are being sent on a secret mission to Faerie to discover if Sebastian left a weapon there before he died. At the L.A. Institute, Nene confirms to Emma and Julian that Jace and Clary made it to Faerie, but they have not returned yet.
Jaime Rocio Rosales
Shadowhunter
Member of the conclave in Mexico City. Diego's younger brother. Was Cristina's best friend and scheduled to become her parabatai when Cristina overheard him talking about how he and Diego could use their influence over Cristina to take control of the Institute from Cristina's mother and have their famiy lead the Institute instead. Cristina left for Los Angeles the next day and has not heard from Jaime since.
Jaime shows up at the London Institute and convinces Dru to help him hide until he gets a chance to speak to Cristina alone. Dru helps facilitate a meeting between the two of them. He explains that the Dearborns are blackmailing his family. Jaime is not sure when he will be able to return to his family, for now he must keep the heirloom hidden, but he insists that if the Blackthorns are going to fight the Cohort that he wants to fight with them. Dru sees the heirloom in his bag before he leaves and when she touches it, she is transported to an underground room. There is a faerie boy about her age there who asks her a whole barrage of questions she is too stunned to attempt to answer. Before she can ask any questions of her own, she is dropped back into her own bedroom. She later finds a note from Jaime saying goodbye.
Jem (James) Carstairs
Shadowhunter
Married to Tessa Gray. Jem used to be a Silent Brother named Brother Zachariah. Now that he is no longer a Silent Brother, he and Tessa have married but they do not live within the Clave. Instead, they have been searching for a line of the Herondale family that many believe was ended. They find who they were looking for and tell Kit Rook that his father was a descendant of Tobias Herondale named Jonathan Herondale, though he went by Johnny Rook to stay off the radar, and that Kit's birth name is Christopher Rook.
Tessa and Jem are still on some secret mission even though Malcolm's body has been found, Malcolm has been killed a second time, and Annabel has the Black Volume so it is no longer at the bottom of the ocean.
Jessamine (Jessie) Lovelace
Shadowhunter
Ghost at the London Institute who helped Arthur and the other residents stay safe when Sebastian attacked the Institute during the Dark War. Kit is able to see her, though the Blackthorns and Evelyn Highsmith is not. She tells Kit where to find Malcolm's home in Cornwall, and not to steal any books from the library.
Jessica Beausejours
Shadowhunter
Centurion. Close friend of Zara and just as bigoted. Part of the group sent to the Los Angeles Institute to search for Malcolm Fade's body and the Black Volume of the Dead.
Jia Penhallow
Shadowhunter
Consul of the Shadowhunter Council. Wife of Patrick Penhallow. Mother to Aline.
Diana speaks to Jia about her concerns with the Cohort and Zara Dearborn, believing that Jia is not as prejudiced against Downworlders as others. Jia has never supported the Cold Peace and often asks the Council to vote to return Aline and Helen from Wrangel Island, but is always voted against. She does insist that part of the reason they were sent to Wrangel Island is to keep Helen, and Aline by extension, safe from people who may wish to hurt them. She gives Diana a dossier on Zara, which tells Diana that Zara is claiming she killed Malcolm Fade and leads Diana to believe that Zara has often claimed the accomplishments of other Shadowhunters. When Diana tells Jia about the blight she saw in Brocelind Plain, Jia tells her that Helen and Aline saw spots of dark magic on the ward maps in areas that the blight has broken through. She wants Aline and Helen to testify about the spots they saw when Kieran gives his testimony but is afraid that there isn't enough time so DIana agrees to bring them to Alicante with the Wild Hunt. Both Jia and Robert are in favor of having Kieran and Annabel testify and ending the Cold Peace to work with the Seelie Queen, but understand it will be a hard sell to others. When the Mortal Sword is broken by Cortana, Jia takes Cortana from Emma.
John Carstairs
Shadowhunter
Emma Carstairs' father. Murdered with his wife the same day that Sebastian attacked the Los Angeles Institute, but Emma does not believe that he was killed by Sebastian - who would have preferred to make him Endarkened. Throughout the investigation into the thirteen murders, Emma discovers that her parents returned to the Institute after Sebastian's attack to find Malcolm in the library looking for the Black Volume of the Dead. Malcolm killed them and used them as an experiment to try to bring Annabel back to life. He was unsuccessful.
Deceased
Johnny Rook
Mundane
Mundane with the sight who has a booth at the Shadow Market. Father to Kit.
He knows everyone's secrets and is often a good source of information. Emma is told about the murders and tipped off about where the next body will be dropped by Rook - instigating her investigation into the thirteen murders. Eventually they find out that Rook had been hired to tell Emma that information and to create a poison for the Guardian, though he does not know who the Guardian is. After Malcolm is found out and killed, the protections the Guardian placed on Rook's house disappear. Johnny and Kit are attacked by Mantid demons. Emma is able to save Kit with the help of Jem and Tessa, but Johnny is killed by the demons. Jem and Tessa explain that Johnny was actually a Shadowhunter from a line they believed had died out, named Jonathan Herondale, and Kit's birth name is Christopher Herondale. They take Kit to the Los Angeles Institute where he will be safe from his father's enemies.

Jules (Julian) Blackthorn
Shadowhunter
Eldest son of Andrew Blackthorn, the leader of the Los Angeles Institute, with his late wife Eleanor, though he had two older half-faerie children, Helen and Mark, whose mother was the faerie Nerissa. He has four younger siblings, Livvy, Ty, Dru, and Tavvy. Best friend and parabatai of Emma Carstairs. In love with Emma.
Their father Andrew was turned Endarkened during the Dark War when Julian was twelve years old. When their Endarkened father breaches the Gard, Julian killed him to protect his siblings. He asks Emma to become his parabatai so they would not be separated when the Blackthorns return to Los Angeles, since Jia wanted Emma to attend Shadowhunter Academy. He speaks to Helen on Wrangel Island by video call once a week and has never given up on seeing his brother Mark again. After their uncle Arthur became head of the Institute, Julian quickly realized that Arthur was incapable of doing the job. In an effort to keep what remained of his family together, he began running the Institute and raising his siblings himself in secret. He has asked their tutor, Diana, who suspects the truth of who is in charge of the Insitute, to take over but she has told him no with no explanation. Julian is very good at strategizing and thinks several steps ahead of other people. He is fully committed to helping Emma solve her parents' murders. When the faerie convoy comes to the Institute with Mark, Julian and Emma lead the investigation into who is behind the murders, though Julian is often upset with Emma for rushing ahead and leaving him behind. While investigating, he is shot with a poisoned crossbow bolt and nearly dies. It is only Emma's iratze, made stronger by their forgbidden parabatai love, that saved his life. Only Emma knows this, she has not told Julian. They have begun to be able to hear the other's intentions in their heads as well. After solving the murders and discovering that parabatai that fall in love ineveitably go mad and kill those closest to them before dying themselves, Emma decides that she must drive Julian away and make him not love her anymore. She starts pretend dating his brother Mark instead.
When Mark is told that Kieran is going to be executed, Cristina, Julian, and Emma follow him into Faerie to save Kieran. The phouka at the gate tells Julian that he will find someone with information about breaking the parabatai bond while in Faerie. They're able to get Kieran and take him to the Seelie Court, but not before Julian takes Prince Erec hostage to make sure they are safely allowed out of Unseelie lands. It doesn't work, but Mark's aunt Nene sneaks theem into Seelie lands safely. She also shows Julian how Arthur dies through her scrying glass and tells him that if she receives the Black Volume, she will tell him what she knows about breaking the parabatai bonds. She does warn him that it would include breaking all parabatai bonds - not just his. Annabel received a letter from Ty that made her trust Julian. Afterward, Magnus Portals everyone to Alicante. Emma and Julian explain their situation to Robert Lightwood, who agrees to help them by exiling Emma to a certain degree, which should delay the curse. Unfortunately, the Clave, lead by the Cohort, called Annabel filthy names and threw things at her. It was her trial all over again and it broke what was left of her mind. when Annabel is attacked during her testimony, she uses the Mortal Sword to kill Robert Lightwood. Annabel turns the Sword on Julian, but Emma uses Cortana to deflect her swing and Cortana breaks the Mortal Sword. Annabel uses the shards to kill Livvy before disappearing.
Kieran
Unseelie Faerie
Prince of the Unseelie Court. One of the Unseelie King's fifty or so sons, who he gave to the Wild Hunt. His mother was some sort of water faerie. His hair is fluctuating shades of blue and he has one silver iris and one black iris. Rides Windspear. Mark's ex-lover.
Kieran was ostracized by the other faeries of the Wild Hunt for his parentage. He and Mark came to rely on each other and to love one another, being the only refuge or safe place for the other in the Wild Hunt. He made a valuable and rare faerie token called an elf-bolt for Mark. He came with Mark when Mark was taken to the L.A. Insittute and was allowed to help the Shadowhunters in their investigation. He spent much of his time watching Mark and getting jealous of Mark's relationship with Cristina. When he eavesdropped on Mark and Cristina one day, he overheard Mark telling Cristina a secret of faerie. Kieran tattled, believing that Mark would be forced to return to the Hunt. He was appalled when Mark was given twenty lashes instead. Knowing that Mark would not survive twenty lashes, Julian took the punishment, and then Emma took the majority of the punishment when Julian fell unconscious. Mark told Kieran that their relationship was over and he would never forgive Kieran for the injury that he had caused Julian and Emma.
Mark is told by Gwyn that Kieran has been imprisoned by his father for killing Iarlath and is scheduled to be executed, asking Mark to save Kieran's life since the Wild Hunt has sworn not to interfere. When Mark leaves to save Kieran, Cristina, Julian, and Emma follow him into Faerie. They're able to save Kieran and take him to the Seelie Court, but Mark realizes that Kieran doesn't remember anything after he eavesdropped on Mark and Cristina. He doesn't remember the whipping or saving Tavvy or breaking up with Mark. Since Kieran is badly hurt, Mark doesn't tell him right away. Mark's aunt Nene sneaks theem into Seelie lands safely and help heal Kieran's wounds. She even has a replacement in mind for the Unseelie King - his son Adaon. She wants Kieran to work as her liason and take her offer to the Clave. In order to do so, he should make a vow to one of the Shadowhunters to prove that he would not work against them. It can't be Mark, so his vow is made to Cristina. Kieran begins to stay with the Blackthorns at the London Institute until he can testify to the Clave. Diana speaks to Jia about calling a Clave meeting, but in the meantime, Kieran arranges a meeting with Adaon. He asks if Adaon would be willing to take the throne after their father but Adaon does not get a chance to answer. Erec, who followed Adaon, takes Cristina, who followed Kieran, hostage. He tries to force Kieran to kill Cristina but Kieran kills Erec instead, but not before Erec informs him that Mannan's Riders have been woken by the Unseelie King to find the Black Volume. Kieran and Cristina rush back to the Institute to warn the others. Magnus collects Emma and Julian from Cornwall as Mark calls on Gwyn's help to find Livvy, Ty, and Kit. Kieran is the one to convince Gwyn to help them. After they're all safe in the Institute, Magnus arranges to have Tavvy, Rafe, and Max sent to Alicante with Alec. When Mannan's Riders attack the Institute, Kieran fights with the Blackthorns and Kit, but they are saved by Annabel. Kieran asks Cristina to help him speak to Adaon again to see if the Riders can be called off, but his father answers instead. He returns Kieran's memories to him. Kieran believes that Mark used him just for his testimony although both Mark and Cristina insist that it is not that simple. Kieran comes to understand why Mark lied and agrees to testify, but will not see Mark again once he's done. Kieran goes to Alicante with the others to testify to the Council. Cristina and Kieran have become for familiar and comfortable with each other, and Kieran has come to admire Cristina for her goodness. Cristina is concerned about what the Cohort will do after Kieran's testimony and sends a secret message to Diego, asking him to take Kieran somewhere safe after he testifies. Unfortunately, Kieran never gets the chance to speak. Annabel testifies first and things turn violent. Diego finds Kieran and takes him to safety at the Scholomance.
Kit Rook
Mundane
Son of Johnny Rook. Mundane with the sight.
Works with Johnny at the Shadow Market and is well acquainted with the darker aspects of the Downworld, and humanity in general. Johnny has raised Kit to hate and fear the Shadowhunters, telling him that the Shadowhunters will kidnap him and force him to drink from the Mortal Cup. At one point when Julian and Emma question Johnny about the Guardian, Ty sneaks into the basement and holds Kit at knife point out of an abundance of caution (he didn't want Emma or Julian to be blindsided by a second person). When the Guardian is killed, the protections he placed on Johnny's home disappear and they are attacked by Mantid demons. Johnny is killed, but Kit is able to text Emma, who comes to rescue him with Tessa and Jem. Afterward, Tessa explains that Kit is descended from a line of Shadowhunters that most believe is now ended. Tobias Herondale deserted and was sentenced to death for it. When he couldn't be found, his pregnant wife was punished instead. Catarina Loss was able to deliver the baby and escape from Europe with him, hiding in the New World. Johnny and Kit descend from that child. Johnny knew and was hiding himself and his son from the Shadowhunters but now, an Institute may be the only place that Kit can expect a modicum of safety from Johnny's enemies. Kit is having trouble coming to terms with this new information and locks himself inside his room. Ty sits outside of it and patiently waits for Kit to come out.
Kit begins to live at the Institute, meeting Jace and becoming friends with the twins in particular. He slowly comes to terms with the idea of being a Shadowhunter. He is with Julian when Barnabas Hale refuses to allow Shadowhunters into the Shadow Market any longer, which makes Kit feel betrayed. He fights with the Blackthorns against Malcolm and his demons, but Diana and Arthur stop him to send him to the London Institute with the Blackthorns. He helps Ty find the Portal to the Cornwall Institute and helps LIvvy and Ty search the Blackthorn Manor. They find the alatheia crystal and take it to the Shadow Market to unleash its memories. Things turn violent at the London Shadow Market and Kit fights with the twins until Magnus comes to save them. He fights with them against Mannan's Riders and gets a concussion. Ty sleeps in the bed next to him until he wakes up. He fights against the Riders a second time, one of the Riders continues to insist that he recognizes Kit, but Annabel saves them and the Riders retreat. Kit joins the Blackthorns in Alicante and helps Julian to get Alec when Magnus collapses. He overhears when Alec tells Robert that Magnus has been getting worn out easily but they haven't had a chance to speak to the Spiral Labyrinth yet. He is there when Alec leaves because Robert was hurt and when Diego comes to take Kieran to the Scholomance. Kieran asks Kit to tell Mark where he is and to pass his thanks to Cristina.
Livvy (Livia) Blackthorn
Shadowhunter
Eldest daughter of Andrew Blackthorn, leader of the Los Angeles Institute, and his late wife Eleanor, though he had two older half-faerie children, Helen and Mark, with the faerie Nerissa. Twin sister to Ty. Has three older siblings, Helen, Mark, and Julian, and two younger siblings, Dru and Tavvy.
Ty and Livvy help Julian and Emma with the investigation primarily by researching on Ty's iliicit computer. They are able to find Stanley Wells' home after he is identified, research the other murder victims, and translate parts of the spell. Livvy really wants Ty to agree to become her parabatai, but he steadfastly refuses. He wants to go to the Scholomance, and they will not accept anyone who has a parabatai. When Tavvy is taken, Livvy fights at the convergence to save him.
Kit begins to live at the Institute, becoming quite close to the twins. She fights against Malcolm and his demons, but Arthur drags her instide when he finds out what Malcolm wants and has Livvy and her siblings sent to the London Institute. LIvvy and Ty search the Blackthorn Manor with Kit. They find the alatheia crystal and take it to the Shadow Market to unleash its memories. Things turn violent at the London Shadow Market and Livvy is poisoned. Luckily, Magnus comes to save them and is able to save Livvy's life. She fights with them against Mannan's Riders when they come for the Black Volume and threaten to take Livvy and Ty hostage until their siblings turn the Volume over. She fights against the Riders a second time, but Annabel saves them and the Riders retreat. She goes with the rest of her family to Alicante and is reunited with her sister Helen. When Annabel's testimony turns violent, Julian desperately tries to calm Annabel down. After Annabel uses the Mortal Sword to kill Robert Lightwood, Julian stands in front of Annabel without a weapon. Emma saves his life, breaking the Mortal Sword with Cortana, while Livvy climbs the dais and throws Julian her own weapon. Annabel uses the shards of the Mortal Sword but does not attack Julian again, instead she kills Livvy.

Magnus Bane
Warlock
High Warlock of Brooklyn. Demon Mark: Cat eyes. Boyfriend of Alec Lightwood. Adopted father of Max. Warlock representative to the Council. Friend of Malcolm Fade.
Ever since the Dark War, Magnus has a map that alerts him to any necromantic activity - which he then investigates. He is alerted to necromantic activity in L.A. and is at Malcolm's home when Julian and Emma come to ask Malcolm to help with the Faerie translantion. Malcolm insists that the necromantic activity was a small time warlock that Diana has already dealt with. He mentions that Malcolm had issues with ley lines while he was living in Cornwall, but Malcolm refuses to discuss it and escorts Magnus out. On the way, Magnus tells Emma that ley lines are strongest where they meet, called a convergence. Later, when Malcolm raises the Followers to fight the Shadowhunters that have come to save Tavvy, Magnus is alerted to the activity. He leaves Isabelle and Simon's engagement party with Jace, Clary, Alec, and Robert. They are at the Institute when Julian and the others arrive after confronting and killng Malcolm. Magnus is upset to learn that Malcolm died believing his friends betrayed him by keeping the secret of Annabel from him.
The Blackthorns are told by Diana to contact Magnus and Alec if they need help while she is in Alicante meeting with Jia. Livvy, Ty, and Kit are sent to investigate Blackthorn Manor and while they are gone, Magnus and Alec arrive at the London Institute. Magnus Portals Livvy, Ty, and Kit away from the London Shadow Market and is able to save Livvy's life when she is poisoned. He finds a way to break the binding on Mark and Cristina and sends Ty, Livvy, and Kit out for supplies just before Kieran tells them that Mannan's Riders have been sent to find the Black Volume. Once Livvy, Ty, and Kit are returned to the Institute by Gwyn, Magnus collects Julian and Emma from Cornwall. He recognizes what is happening between Julian and Emma and encourages Julian to ask Robert for help when they get to Alicante. After Portaling Alec, Rafe, Max, and Tavvy to Alicante, the rest of them discuss their options until Mark and Cristina's binding is broken. When they are attacked again by Mannan's Riders and Annabel saves them, Magnus decides they need to Portal to Alicante right away even though he is weak. As soon as he has the strength, he travels with them to Alicante, Kieran and Annabel included. He is taken to a private room to sit with Kieran and Annabel before the meeting starts but Magnus collapses from over exerting himself. Alec explains to Robert that recently, Magnus' magic has been depleting quickly. They haven't had time to see the Spiral Labyrinth about it yet. Magnus is still recovering when the meeting starts, Robert and Livvy are killed, and Kieran is taken to the Scholomance.
Malcolm Fade
Warlock
High Warlock of Los Angeles. Demon mark: purple eyes. Known for being very eccentric. Friend of Malcolm and Catarina.
Malcolm is one of the only people to know about Arthur's infirmity. He helps Julian by creating a tonic that allows Arthur small periods of lucidity, although Arthur gets debilitating headaches afterward. He helps the Shadowhunters with the investigation into the murders, but they later learn that he has done nothing but lead them astray. In fact, Malcolm is the Guardian behind the murders and the person who killed Emma's parents. When he was young, he fell in love with Annabel Blackthorn. It was illegal for them to be together and her family absolutely did not approve. Malcolm was told that Annabel had been sent to the Iron Citadel. He later learned that she was actually murdered by her family. He went to the Unseelie King and asked if there was a way to bring her back and was given a poem of instructions. He was also told to steal the Black Volume of the Dead. After Sebastian's attack on the L.A. Institute during the Dark War, Malcolm went to the Institute's library to find the book and was discovered by Emma's parents. He killed them and tried to use them to bring Annabel back but was unsuccessful. After successfully translating the poem, he realizes that he must have thirteen hands that have committed murder. He creates the Followers, a group that follows the Guardian. They have a lottery, during which one person is chosen to commit a murder. After they give their hand to the Guardian, they receive their heart's desire and the power of all the Followers increases. After the thirteen are collected, he must use the blood of a Blackthorn to bring Annabel back. He chooses Tavvy, kidnapping the boy and preparing to sacrifice him. However, the Blackthorns and their friends mount a rescue, saving Tavvy. Emma forces Malcolm through the porthole in the convergence, plunging him deep into the ocean where she sees him get grabbed by a sea demon. He was holding the Black Volume of the Dead when he went into the water. He was unsuccessful in raising Annabel.
Malcolm is able to come back to life with the help of spells he placed before he died. He returns to the Los Angeles Institute and demands a Blackthorn to use to bring Annabel back. If he doesn't get one, he will unleash sea demons on every ocean coastline. Arthur gets his nieces and nephews to safety in London and then turns himself over to Malcolm. Malcolm takes Arthur to a church in Cornwall where he kills Arthur and uses his blood to raise Annabel. Unknown to Malcolm, Annabel's mind has been awake since he killed Emma's parents five years ago and she has been stuck in a prison of his making since then. When she is fully raised, she kills Malcolm herself and takes the Black Volume when she leaves the church.

Mark Blackthorn
Shadowhunter
Eldest son of Andrew Blackthorn, leader of the Los Angeles Institute. His mother is the Faerie Princess Nerissa. Called Miach in the Seelie Court. He has one older sister, Helen, and five younger half-siblings from Andrew and his late wife Eleanor. Ex-lover of Kieran, has a crush on Cristina, fake dating Emma.
Mark and Helen were brought to the Institute when his mother died and his father's wife raised him as her own son until she died. When the Los Angeles Institute was attacked, Mark went to defend the Institute but unlike his father, he was not Turned because he was half-faerie. Instead, he was given to the Wild Hunt. He saw Jace, Clary, and their friends before they went to Edom and they convinced him to stay strong and keep fighting. Jace gave him a witchlight. After the Dark War ended, many Shadowhunters wanted both Mark and Helen stripped of their Marks because they were half-faerie. As a compromise, they decided to send Helen to Wrangel Island and to not negotiate Mark's release from the Wild Hunt. The Shadowhunters are not supposed to have any dealings with faeries from any Court, so Julian and Emma are surprised when a Faerie convoy appears at the L.A. Institute. The convoy brings Mark to the Institute. The faeries want the Institute to investigate murders of the Fair Folk in the L.A. area and have brought Mark as a bargaining chip. If the murderer is found and turned over to the faeries, then Mark can decide whether to stay with his family or return to the Hunt. The Shadowhunters decide to investigate without the Clave's knowledge. Mark has a very hard time acclimating to life outside the Hunt. He was treated poorly by the faeries, berated and tortured, they gave him hallucinations of his family dying. At first, he believes this is just another hallucination but Cristina helps him to find his way back to his siblings. He helps in the investigation but refuses any Marks. He begins to feel something for Cristina, but is torn between her and his love for Kieran, another member of the Wild Hunt and the only reason he would have to return. When Kieran spies on Mark and hears Mark accidentally reveal a faerie secret to Cristina, Kieran tattles. He believes that Mark will be forced to return to the Hunt, but is appalled to learn that Mark is to receive twenty lashes instead. Julian, knowing that twenty lashes would kill Mark, volunteers to take the punishment much to Mark's dismay. After three lashes, Emma knocks Julian unconscious and takes the lashes instead. It nearly kills her and Mark breaks up with Kieran. He tells Kieran that he will never forgive him. However, Kieran reappears when Tavvy is taken by Malcolm, flying Windspear to the convergence with Mark to clear the demons before the others arrive. He fights with the Shadowhunters to save Tavvy and they are ultimately successful. Mark still does not forgive Kieran, but he does recognize that his help was instrumental in saving Tavvy. If Kieran needs help, he may call on Mark and Mark will come. By this time, Cristina has gotten back together with Diego and Mark is unexpectedly upset about it. Emma asks Mark to fake date her, to drive Julian away from her, only telling Mark that it may save Julian's life. Mark agrees.
The phouka at the gate tells Mark that he will have the chance to fly with the Wild Hunt again while in Faerie. They're able to get Kieran and take him to the Seelie Court, but not before Mark and Cristina have a binding put on them so they cannot be too far away from each other. Mark realizes that Kieran doesn't remember anything after he eavesdropped on Mark and Cristina. He doesn't remember the whipping or saving Tavvy or breaking up with Mark. Since Kieran is badly hurt, Mark doesn't tell him right away. Mark meets his aunt Nene, who sneaks theem into Seelie lands safely and helps heal Kieran's wounds. Mark agrees not to tell Kieran the truth about what happened between them until after he has testified. After returning to the mortal world, Cristina and Mark struggle to find a way to break their binding, which Magnus eventually does. He and the others help Emma to fight Mannan's Riders, but it is Annabel who saves them. Mark goes with his family to Alicante so Annabel and Kieran can testify. He is reunited with his sister Helen and for a moment, all of the Blackthorns are together again. But then, Annabel's testimony turns violent and Annabel kills Livvy.

When Malcolm learned that Annabel had not joined the Iron Citadel and was killed by her family, he went to the Unseelie King to learn how to raise Annabel.
He believes that he is the rightful ruler of both Unseelie and Seelie lands and has chosen the emblem of a broken crown that will remain broken until he rules over both courts. He has fifty sons, who fight over becoming heir, but he has all his daughters killed when they are born. His first child was stolen from him and possibly killed. The child is called the First Heir, and Kieran says the King is obsessed with finding out what happened to him. Kieran believes that the Unseelie King agreed to give Malcolm and Annabel protection from the Clave if Malcolm stole the Black Volume for him, even breaking Malcolm out of the Silent City so it would not be discovered who Malcolm was working with. He did not break Annabel out, potentially because Annabel was not aware of who Malcolm was getting help from. It makes sense that he would go back to the Unseelie King later. The Seelie Queen says that the Unseelie King exchanged the information on how to raise Annabel for Malcolm to create spells that made seraph blades and runes useless in Faerie. He has caused a blight that kills everything in Unseelie lands and the blight has broken through to Broceline Plain in Alicante. The Seelie Queen wants to stop him before the blight enters Seelie lands. In addition, the King holds someone from the Seelie Court hostage and the Queen wants the Black Volume in order to get that person back. The King has woken up Mannan's Riders to find the Black Volume and bring it to him. When Annabel testifies to the Clave and things turn violent, she disappears after killing Robert and LIvvy in a plume of smoke that shows the Unseelie King's emblem for just a moment.

She always has several of her friends that back up her statement. She is at the Council meeting when Annabel testifies and is one of the people who is loudest about not believing her, even when Annabel is questioned with the Mortal Sword. When Cristina first finds out that Zara and Diego are engaged, Diego explains that he wrote a letter breaking up with Zara when he and Cristina got back together. But when Zara showed up in Los Angeles, he realized he couldn't break off their engagement. When Jaime speaks to Cristina in London, he explains that the Dearborns are blackmailing their family. They have an heirloom that was given to them by the faeries that was not turned in at the beginning of the Cold Peace. The Dearborns found out and want to use the heirloom, which would be disastrous. Jaime's family told the Dearborns that only a Rosales can use the heirloom, which led to Zara becoming engaged to Diego so that she could become a Rosales herself and use the heirloom. Before that could happen, Jaime took the heirloom and disappeared with it. He has been on the run since, trying to figure out how the heirloom works and keep it out of the Dearborns hands. Diego does not love Zara, nor does he want to marry her, he is only doing so to protect is family.
