Of Blood and Fire Study Guide

Father to Dahlen and Erik. 

Draleid who fought against Fane when The Order fell. His dragon, Lyara, was hunted down by the empire and killed. He has continued to fight against them, retrieving a dragon's egg from Valacia. He trains Dann and Calen how to use the sword as they make their way to Belduar. 

*During the Fall*

Draleid of the Order. Charged with guarding the bridge to the council chambers by Eltoar Daethana before realizing that Eltoar was one of the traitors. Aeson fought Eltoar with help from the Knights of Achyron, but Eltoar was too powerful. He killed six of the Knights before Aeson used the Source to throw him through a wall and he and the remaining Knights retreated. He was invited to make his own way to the Knight's temple by Kallinvar after finishing what he needed to do that night.

Elf from Aravell Forest. Twin to Lyrei. 

One of the elves that joins Calen's honor guard. 

Man from Drifaien that Calen and Dann meet in Milltown. Teaches Calen to throw axes. 

Legendary mage, Archon of the Order, Draleid bound to Vyldrar. She was killed by her First-Sword and closest friend Eltoar Daethana when she refused to join him and turn against the Order. She and her dragon both died during the Fall.

King of Belduar. 

Trusted by Aeson and Therin. Joins Calen to meet with the Dwarven Freehold but is called away earlier because his son is ill. Belduar was overrun by while he was there and he was killed by the Fade.

Jotnar (giant) who travels in a small group with Larion and Senas. Rescues Calen and Erik when they are attacked by Uraks and gives them fresh horses for the rest of their journey. Accompanies Calen to the Dwarven Freehold meeting and fights with Calen and Aeson for Belduar.

Draleid to the dragon Valerys. Son of Vars and Freis Bryer from The Glade. Brother to Ella and the late Haem. Friend of Rist and Dann. 

After becoming the victor of the Proving with his friends, he took his winning purse to Milltown and met Erik. When Erik, Aeson, and Dahlen were attacked by imperial soldiers, Calen fought with them, causing the soldiers to track him down and kill his father and mother. He assumes his sister is also dead. Became bonded to Valerys and taught to use the Spark by Therin and the sword by Aeson. Gained a honor guard of five elves of Aravell Forest and met with the Dwarven Freehold representatives, convincing at least Queen Kira to help defend Belduar. Attended the coronation of Daymon, King of Belduar.

Draleid of the Order bound to the dragon Aldryn. She fights on the side of the Order during the Fall and tries to rescue dragon eggs from the hatchery towers, only to find them all destroyed. She had been found by Kollna after being orphaned and shipwrecked. Dylain sacrifices himself after his dragon dies, allowing Farwen and Coren to escape the hatchery tower.

Son of Aeson, brother of Erik. 

Traveled with his father to steal the Valacian dragon egg. Was with Rist when the Fade came and took Rist to the mages, leaving Dahlen unconscious. Fought in Belduar when it was attacked. Struggles with feelings of jealousy over Calen becoming Draleid. 

Son of Tharn and Ylinda Pimm of The Glade. Friend to Calen and Rist. Excellent bowman. 

Became the victor of The Proving with his friends, in which a kat became quite friendly with him, and went to Milltown to spend his winnings, meeting Erik. When Erik and his family was attacked by imperial guards, Dann fought with them. Unable to return home to keep his parents safe, he is traveling with Aeson and learning to use the sword. Helped to defend Belduar, including fighting the Fade.

Prince of Belduar, son of King Arthur Bryne. 

When Belduar is attacked and his father is killed, Daymon becomes king. Therin is unsure of whether he can be trusted. 

Friend of Fritz and Kurtis who takes the bear pelt from Calen, Dann, and Rist during the Proving and is present when Rist is shot through the leg. 

Master Draleid of the Order bound to the dragon Soria. They fight with the Order during the Fall and both die that night. He tries to rescue dragon eggs from the hatchery towers, only to find them all destroyed. After his dragon is killed, he stays to fight the incoming Uraks, which allows Coren and Farwen to escape. Eltoar Daethana helps him to kill the Uraks, but when Dylain calls Eltoar a traitor, Eltoar kills him as well.

Queen of Ozryn of the Dwarven Freehold. A warrior queen.

Daughter of Vars and Freis Bryer. Sister to Calen and the late Haem. Girlfriend of Rhett. 

When Calen is in Milltown, she takes the chance to run away to Bedona with Rhett so the two of them can be together, which her father would not be okay with. During their journey, imperial soldiers search for her to use her as bait to lure Calen out of hiding. When they find her, they kill the majority of the party she is traveling with, including Rhett. Before they can take her captive, Faenir kills the soldiers. She is currently traveling from Gisa to Bedona with Faenir the wolfpine and the another of the survivors, Shirea.

Elf from Aravell Forest who becomes honor guard to Calen and Valerys. During the attack on Belduar, he fights with Calen and Aeson against the Fade and is killed.

First-sword of the Order, Draleid bound to Helios. Turned against the Order to follow Fane Mortem, fighting against the Order during the Fall. He killed his closest friend Alvira Serris when she refused to join him. He also killed Master Dylain. Killed King Eric, who ruled before Fane Mortem. 

Village Elder and Head of the Village Council for The Glade.

Son of Aeson, brother to Dahlen. 

Traveled with his father to steal the Valacian dragon egg. Has become friends with Calen and Dann. Fought in Belduar when it was attacked. 

Mage who allows the darkness to share their body in exchange for more power. 

This particular Fade works with Fane Mortem and Farda to track down Calen. It kidnaps Rist and transports him to Al'Nasla to be trained as a mage. He gains entry to Belduar and kills King Arthur. He is killed by Valerys when he breathed fire for the first time.

A member of the Wind Runners Guild who transports people between the dwarven kingdoms and Belduar.

Emperor of the Lorian Empire. 

Became obsessed with power while studying as a mage and began to use dark magic - even training with a shaman in the mountains. He turned many mages to his side and some Draleid as well, which allowed him to destroy The Order and nearly anyone who stood against him. 

Draleid of the Order who defected to follow Fane Mortem and fought during the Fall. Bound to the dragon Shinyara.

Justicar of the Lorian Empire. 

As Dahlen says, Farda is unnatural. He is constantly flipping a coin to decipher the will of the gods. Searches for Calen and Aeson, he killed Freis Bryer in the process. Currently with Ella on a boat headed for Berona although it is unclear if he knows who she is.

Killed by Farda when the imperial soldiers were looking for Calen.

Took the bear pelt from Calen, Dann, and Rist during the Proving and shot Rist in the leg. After the imperial guards came looking for Calen, he told them where to find the Bryer family. When Calen escaped, he told Farda that Ella was likely on her way to Berona with Rhett and that they should use her as leverage against Calen. Currently searching for Ella at the port of Falstide.

Elf of Aravell Forest and honor guard to Calen and Valerys. Begins to train Calen how to use the elven sword he received from Vars. Fights with Belduar when it is attacked and loses his left hand - which is not a big deal because he fights with his right and isn't good with a bow anyway.

Mage who begins to train Rist when he is taken by the empire. 

Elder son of Vars and Freis of The Glade. Brother of Ella and Calen. 

Was killed by Uraks along with the majority of the men he lead. The only person to survive was Rhett. Vars blamed Rhett for returning and refuses to speak to him.

Serves King Arthur Bryne of Belduar.

Hates the dwarves. This hatred lead to him allowing their enemy into Belduar, sacking the city and killing King Arthur. He is now Daymon's Chief Advisor.

Member of Kallinvar's unit who has fought with him for so long they are like family. He fights with Kallinvar against Eltoar Daethana, retreating through the Rift when the city falls. One of three of Kallinvar's unit to survive the Fall, when there had been nine to start with, not including Kallinvar himself. 

Wife of Lasch. Mother of Rist. 

Brother-Captain of the Knights of Achyron who fights with the Knights on the side of the Order during the Fall. He takes his unit and they fight Eltoar with Aeson. Eltoar kills most of his unit. When it is clear that the city has fallen, Kallinvar and what remains of his unit uses a Rift called by Grandmaster Verathin to travel back to their temple. Aeson cannot go with them.

Councilmember from Erith, a village near The Glade.

Eric was king before Fane Mortem destroyed The Order and had him killed by Eltoar Daethana.

While searching for Calen, he kills Vars.

Boyfriend of Ella. Friend of the late Haem. 

When Haem was killed in a Urak attack, Rhett was the only survivor. This caused Vars to illogically blame Rhett that Haem was dead. When he and Ella started dating, they hid the relationship because of Vars' animosity. When Calen went to Milltown, he and Ella ran away together to Berona. On the way, imperial soldiers came for Ella and killed Rhett.

Son of Lasch and Ilia of The Glade. Friend of Calen and Dann. 

Killed a Urak with the Spark during the Proving, the first indication that he had any Spark at all. After becoming the victors of the Proving and traveling to Milltown to spend their winnings, they begin traveling with Aeson. Their fellow traveler Therin recognizes that Rist could be very powerful. When the Fade finds Rist, he knocks Dahlen unconscious and takes Rist to the Circle of Magii in Al'Nasla. He is currently being trained as a mage by Garramon.

Woman who traveled on the merchant cart with Ella and Rhett. When the cart was stopped by imperial guards who then tried to take Ella, her husband John fought against the guards with Rhett. Both Rhett and John were killed. Shirea now travels with Ella and Faenir to Berona from Gisa.

Capain of the Kingsguard for Daymon Bryne, King of Belduar.

Member of Kallinvar's unit who has fought with him for so long they are like family. He fights with Kallinvar against Eltoar Daethana, retreating through the Rift when the city falls. One of three of Kallinvar's unit to survive the Fall, when there had been nine to start with, not including Kallinvar himself. 

Elf of Aravell Forest. High Captain of the Aravell Rangers. 

Helps save Aeson's group from Uraks in the Aravell Forest and when the group declines to stay in Aravell, he sends an honor guard of five elves for Calen and Valerys.

Husband of Ylinda. Father of Dann.

Son of Alain Eiltris. Was the Elven Ambassador to The Order. 

Travels as a bard telling the true stories of the empire. When Calen is found by Aeson and rescued from The Glade, Therin begins traveling with their group. He trains Calen in The Spark. He knew Vars from when Vars fought in the Varsund War, the sword that Calen carries was once Therin's. Stays in Belduar when Calen travels to the Dwarven Freehold and fights with Belduar when it's attacked. 

Highguard of the Order killed during the Fall,

Elf of Aravell Forest. One of the honor guard for Calen and Valerys. Talented in the Spark and healing.

Highguard of the Order killed during the Fall.

Husband of Freis. Father of Ella, Calen, and the late Haem. 

Captain of the Illyanara army during the Varsund War. Knew Therin from that time and carried Therin's sword before passing it along to Calen. Blamed Rhett for Haem's death, though he likely knew it was illogical, which caused Rhett and Ella to run away together to Berona. Was killed by Rendall the inquisitor when the imperial guards came looking for Calen.

Grandmaster of the Knights of Achyron and Kallinvar's closest friend. He calls a Rift to allow the Knights to travel to Ilnaen and fights on the side of the Order. He tells the Knights to retreat when the city falls, opening the Rift again for them to return to their temple.

Dragon bound to Coren Valmar, who fights with the Order during the Fall.

Dragon bound to Eltoar Daethana, First-Sword of the Order, who defected to follow Fane Mortem. 

Dragon bound to Farda who defected from the Order and fought during the Fall. 

Dragon bound to Dylain who fought with the Order during the Fall. They both died that night.

Dragon bound to Kollna, daughter of Luan, who fights with the Order during the Fall. The largest dragon in the Order.

Valacian dragon bonded to Calen. His egg was found and brought south by Aeson and his sons. Helps to defend Belduar.

Dragon bound to Alvira Serris, Archon of the Order. They both died in the Fall.

Wolfpine and pet of the Bryer family. After Vars and Freis are killed, he tracks down Ella and saves her from imperial soldiers. He is currently with Ella en route to Bedona.
