Grim and Oro Novellas by Alex Aster
Alex Aster has continued her Lightlark series by releasing two novellas, one a prequel before the events of Lightlark from Grim's points of view, named Grim, and the other covering Oro's life before and during the events of Lightlark, named Oro. As many of you know, I am not a fan of the Lightlark books. I feel like I was duped by Tiktok into reading them, plus the cover of the first book looked cool, and I've regretted it and my inability to leave a series before it is completed ever since. That being said, this may have been the best of the lot. First, the covers are very fun. In the dueling crowns addition, you have Grim on one side and Oro on the other, plus I like that the sprayed edges fight between the light and the dark. There is some artwork included at the beginning of each of the stories, which was hands down the best part. But it turns out that before they meet Isla, both of these characters are pretty dynamic and dimensional. To think, they both had thoughts before they met her that did not revolve around where she was, what she was doing, and if she liked them. Eventually, they do meet Isla in the stories and things go downhill pretty quickly, but at least Oro finally has a personality this time around.
I'm giving the Grim and Oro novellas by Alex Aster 3.25 stars out of 5. Again, this is the best score that any of the Lightlark books have gotten from me, so keep that in mind. I just can't wait until she releases the last book so I can wash my hands of this series and Alex Aster as an author.
