It took me half an hour to track down how to read The Fall by Ryan Cahill, which was so silly of me because it the author gives it to you for free when you sign up for his newsletter! A novella based in his The Bound and the Broken series, The Fall is where everything starts. Ryan Cahill has recommended two ways of reading this series. The first, which he calls Fellinsir, starts with the first full length book, Of Blood and Fire, before moving on to The Fall. This is the route I took and it allows you to fully immerse yourself in the world before picking up the pace. The second option he calls Svidyara, in which the order of those two books are swapped. This drops you directly into the action, there is no time wasted. For a summary of either book and a spoiler free study guide, check out our The Bound and the Broken series page.
The Fall is the most action packed novella I've ever read. It takes place over one night, experiencing the night The Order fell from four different points of view. It deals with death and animal death, violence, blood, murder, fire, war, and injury. There's not a lot of time in this story for world building or character growth, it is literally just a recollection of what happened during The Fall to allow you to experience the rest of the series in a richer way. And it got me excited to keep going with the series. Now I can't wait to read the second full length book in the series, Of Darkness and Light.
I'm giving The Fall by Ryan Cahill 4.5 stars out of 5. It was quick to get through, you could probably knock it out in an hour, and it was easily the most exciting novella I've read.
