Member of the Jehar who went into the tunnel with Nathair and saw Alcyon kill Romar. 

Travels with Sumur and does not seem entirely okay with what is happening. Is in the cauldron room when the gate is opened for the Kadoshim but is not chosen as a vessel himself. Fights against the Kadoshim and retreats, joining Corban's group.

Of the Kurgan giant clan. Ally of Nathair and Calidus. 

Present when Nathair first meets Calidus. Assists Nathair when they fight the Shekam giants and search for Telassar. Vows to find a draig egg for Nathair to raise when Nathair declares that he wants one. Becomes one of Nathair's most trusted advisor and joins Veradis and Calidus when they fight the Hunen giants. When Calidus claims Dagda's axe for Nathair, Romar does not accept the claim, so Alcyon kills him.

Alcyon continues to carry the starstone axe and becomes quite friendly with Veradis. It becomes clear that Calidus has some of Alcyon's hair and forces him to do things, it's unclear how much of what Alcyon does is forced on him or he does because he chooses to. After Veradis separates from the rest of Nathair's group, Alcyon is given the task of watching over Cywen. They travel with Nathair to Murias where Calidus uses the cauldron. Realizing that the cauldron needs a living sacrifice, Alcyon cuts Cywen's bonds and blocks her from sight so she will not be chosen. This allows Cywen to escape with Corban and Gwenith. The starstone axe is taken from Alcyon by Balur One-Eye, allowing the gate to be closed.

Queen of Ardan. Wife of Brenin. Mother of Edana. Sister of Pendathran and the late Rhagor. 

Leads the country while Brenin is at the King's Council and reiterates that Evnis cannot leave the city while Brenin is gone, leading to Evnis blaming Alona and Brenin for the death of his wife. Passes Queen's Judgement for Corban and Storm, allowing Corban to raise Storm as long as she does not hurt anyone. If she does, she will be killed. Alona is taken hostage while in Narvon for the wedding of Kyla and Uthar, leading to her being shot by Rhin's soldiers and dying.

Farrell's dad. 

Travels with Edana and Corban's group when they escape Ardan. He fights in the mountains against some of Rhin's warriors and is killed. His body is carried by Farrell until they are able to properly lay his body to rest. He is placed under a cairn with Heb.

King of Tenebral, technically High King of the Banished Lands. Husband of Fidele. Father of Nathair. Descended from King Sokar, first High King of the Banished Lands. 

After discovering the prophecy of the avatars and the God-War, he calls the first King's Council in a millenia. Forms an alliance to fight for Elyon's avatar The Bright Star with Brenin, Braster, Rahim, Romar, and Temel. Mandros comes to Tenebral for Midwinter, when the sun is blacked out at midday (a sign of the prophecy). Aquilus is later killed and his son is stabbed in the side and left for dead. It is believed that Mandros is the perpetrator, but Mandros claims that it was Nathair.

Aquilus' weapons-master and a well-known warrior. 

Once Fidele is under Lykos' control, Armatus joins Peritus for a meeting with Fidele. Peritus tries to wrest control of Tenebral from Fidele but both he and Armatus are taken prisoner by Lykos and the Vin Thalun. Lykos plans to have them executed in the fighting pits. After Orgull wins an exhibition match and is given the honor of killing Peritus and Armatus, Orgull breaks their chains and sets them free. Other Tenebral warriors try to get them to safety, by they are overpowered by the Vin Thalun. Peritus escapes but Armatus is captured and beheaded by Lykos.

Originally captain of the Ben-Elim but turned away, creating the Kadoshim, meaning "The Seperate Ones", from Ben-Elim who followed him. Fought Elyon until Elyon Scourged the world and turned away. His Kadoshim continue to fight the Ben-Elim in the Otherworld. There is a prophecy that the God-War between Asroth and Elyon will return to the world of man and be picked up by two avatars: The Black Sun for Asroth and The Bright Star for Elyon.

Part of Rath's warband, a legend in his own right. He fights with Domhain's forces against Cambren but when Eremon decides to evacuate Edana and Lorcan, Baird is chosen to accompany them. After being followed to the quay, he is able to get Lorcan to safety and travels away from Domhain. 

Legendary Benothi giant. Old enough to remember the Scourging. He fights against Nathair and Uthas when they come for the cauldron, joining forces with Corban and Meical. He takes the starstone axe from Alcyon, allowing the cauldron's gate to be closed but not until several of Sumur's Jehar are possessed by Kadoshim. He takes the giants who are alive and willing, including several giant children, and they join Corban's group - traveling with them when they leave Murias.

Lord of the Darkwood.

Killed Alona's brother Rhagor. Continues to live in the Darkwood with a small community and torment Brenin and Owain. Commands Camlin to attack Dylan's family and destroy their hold, on the order of Evnis. When Camlin is taken prisoner, he stages a rescue and takes Marrock prisoner, releasing him later as he promised Corban and Cywen. When Brenin goes to Narvon for the wedding of Kyla and Uthar, he takes Alona, Edana, and Cywen hostage and kills many of Brenin's men, including Tull. The women are later rescued but Alona dies. It is revealed that Owain killed his family and he was taken in and raised by Rhin, who he is loyal to. She commanded him to become a part of the Darkwood community and use them for her gain.

He is given the task of capturing Corban and killing the remainder of Corban's group. He is able to take Corban, but does not succeed in killing anyone. He takes Corban to Rhin's stronghold, but the rest of his group joins with the Hundred and Meical and they rescue Corban. Braith escapes with Rhin and goes to Domhain. He follows Edana and Lorcan when they escape the keep, fighting against Camlin at the quay. He is poisoned by one of Quinn's daggers and Camlin is able to kill him.

King of Helveth

Allies with Brenin at the King's Council. Works with Romar to flush out the Hunen giants, aided by Nathair's forces. They do eliminate the giants but Braster takes a blow to the head that pulls him from the field of battle. Because of this, he is not witness to what happens after Romar enters the archway to claim the axe.

Braster survives his injury and is recovering in the tent when Orgull, Maquin, and Tahir escape from the giant tunnel. Orgull tells Braster what happened in the tunnel, that Nathair's forces turned on Romar and killed the Isiltir King. Braster and Orgull are part of a brotherhood that have sworn to fight against Asroth. Orgull will go to Isilitir to warn them that Jael plans to claim Romar's throne and Braster decides that he will lay low until he is recovered enough to travel. When he can, he will find Meical and tell Meical of what has happened. He asks his battle-chief Lothar for his opinion, but Lothar kills Braster. He loved Braster, but has chosen to follow Nathair. He blames Braster's death on the Dal Gadrai.

Allies with Aquilus at the King's Council. Before he leaves for the council, he refuses to allow Evnis to take his ailing wife on a trip - leading Evnis to blame Brenin for his wife's death. He often takes in people looking for sanctuary, adding Halion and Conall to his warband after they requested sanctuary, and making a bigger enemy of Rhin when he refuses to return to refugees that requested sanctuary back to her. She forces the use of the Court of Swords but Tull beats her warrior Morcant and Brenin is not forced to return the refugees. When he attends the wedding of Kyla and Uthar, his wife and daughter are taken hostage by Rhin's people (posing as Owain's men) while she makes it look like Brenin's nephew killed Owain's son Uthar. Brenin unearths the coup but Owain does not believe Rhin is behind it. This places Brenin at war with both Owain and Rhin. When he returns to Ardan, he is visited by Nathair. He refuses to give Nathair information on Meical and Nathair takes his revenge by opening the gate for Owain's men and having the Jehar fight with them. Brenin is killed in this altercation.

Healer that many of the children believe is a witch. When Corban tries to steal a comb from her and is caught, he begins to assist her with housework and gathering herbs and becomes her apprentice. When Owain and Nathair attack Brenin's fortress, she and her crow both make it out with Corban's group and she shows off her Elemental skills by calling mist to confuse their enemies.

She escapes Dun Careg with Edana and Corban's group. After being shown the book that Vonn stole from Evnis, she begins to teach Corban elemental magic. They travel together to Domhain, fighting the whole way, but when Corban finds out that Cywen is still alive and plans to save her, Brina decides to go with him.

Counsellor to King Lykos. 

He meets and convinces Nathair to create an alliance with the Vin Thalun on behalf of his father and Tenebral - but he is sworn not to mention Calidus' name to his father. Afterward, against his father's wishes, Nathair continues to utilize the Vin Thalun. Calidus joins Nathair in Tarbesh against the Shekam giants. Afterward, he helps Nathair locate Talassar and the Jehar to claim their assistance, where Calidus reveals that he is Ben-Elim. After Nathair becomes king, Calidus becomes one of his most trusted advisor. He joins Veradis in Helveth against the Hunen giants. Calidus has command of the Jehar who accompany them. After the battle is done, Calidus follows Romar into the archway where Calidus claims the axe for Nathair. This leads to Alcyon using the axe to kill Romar. 

Calidus, Alcyon, and Veradis travel to join Nathair in Ardan, escorting Jael part of the way to Isiltir. They send Lykos to Isiltir to help Jael secure the throne, but he goes with Nathair to Cambren and onward to Murias. After Isiltir, he sends Lykos back to Tenebral with some sort of talisman that will allow Lykos to control Fidele completely. He arranges with Uthas for Nathair's group to have open access to Murias, fighting their way to the cauldron. He sacrifices Morc to open the cauldron's gate for the Kadoshim, but the gate is then closed when the starstone axe is taken from Alcyon. He begins to show his true colors, dropping his benevolent, patient facade. He has a lock of Alcyon's hair, with which he can control Alcyon.

Brother to Halion. Half-brother of Coralen and Maeve. Illegitimate son of Eremon, King of Domhain.

An excellent swordsman and one of the fastest, although does not always use his head while fighting and often lets his temper get the best of him. Requests sanctuary from Brenin with his brother Halion and is eventually given a role in Brenin's warband. He is part of the action when they capture Camlin and rescue Alona adn Edana from being kidnapped. After Ronan's death, he becomes Edana's protector, which he considers a babysitting job. He decides to leave Brenin's hold and join Evnis instead. He is part of the group that escorts the Jehar into the fortress and opens the gates to Narvon. He fights Cywen on the walls of the fortress and is knocked off balance. He falls over the edge of the wall but grabs Cywen and takes her with him. 

Conall survives, as does Cywen. Conall keeps watch on Cywen for Nathair and Evnis, becoming her guard when they travel with Owain's warband to fight Rhin. Once there, Evnis' warband turns traitor (again) and fight on Rhin's side. After the battle is won and Owain is killed, Conall fights against Morcant to become Rhin's FIrst-Sword. He wins, but he and Rhin allow Morcant to live. Conall travels with Rhin, and shares her bed when she want him to, to Cambren. After Braith kidnaps Corban and he is rescued by his friends, Conall, Braith, and Rhin escape Cambren to go to Domhain - who have been under siege for a month. Rhin announces to the people of Domhain that the siege will end if they open the doors and accept her as their queen. She will leave Conall as regent in her stead. Domhain opens its doors and Eremon is killed, accepting Rhin and Conall instead, but Edana and Lorcan are able to escape. Conall chases after them and fights with Halion, but Edana, Lorcan, and Roisin get to the ship and sail away. Conall offers a trade to Edana before the ship gets too far away. Trade Lorcan for her cousin Marrock, who was not able to get to the ship. When she does not agree, Conall kills Marrock.

Illegitimate daughter of Eremon, King of Domhain. Half-sister to Halion and Conall, and to Maeve. 

Part of Rath's warband. The warband find Corban's group as they travel toward Domhain and attacked by giants and by wolven. After helping Corban, they escort them to Eremon's stronghold. Coralen fights with Eremon's forces, mostly doing surveillance instead of fighting on the battlefield. Becomes one of Corban's wolven men, fighting with a wolven pelt and steel claws. When Corban discovers that Cywen is alive, Coralen agrees to act as their guide through Cambren and then onto Murias. She fights with them inside of Murias against Uthas' betrayer Benothi and the Kadoshim. 

Son of Thannon and Gwenith. Brother to Cywen. Has a horse named Shield and a wolven named Storm. Trained as a warrior by Halion and Gar. Apprentice to Brina.

The night of Marrock's wedding, Corban enters the Baglun Forest alone and finds a pregnant wolven that is stuck in the bog. He saves the wolven. He has funny dreams where a mysterious man asks him to do a favor for him and find the cauldron, which he eventually refuses to do. He is at odds with Rafe, who has a vendetta against him. Rafe eventually tries to kill him and is attacked by Storm, leading to her release into the forest so she won't be killed. He accompanies Brenin to the wedding of Kyla and Uthar. He and Gar are the first to realize that the women have been kidnapped and reunite with Storm to lead Marrock and his men right to them. They fight Rhin's men and rescue the women. Once back in Ardan, Corban takes his Warrior's Trial and sits his Long Night, receiving a sword from his father and a spear from Halion who trained him. He is sitting his Long Night when Owain's soldiers arrive. During the siege, he is challenged to a duel by Rafe who he beats quickly and wows the crowd with his swordwork. When Owain and Nathair breach Brenin's fortress, Corban fights with his father but is attacked by Rafe and his father Helfach. Storm saves him but his father dies. Corban makes his way to Halion and shows the survivors the secret tunnel out of the fortress. As they sail, his mother admits that she has some things to discuss with him.

Corban travles with Edana and their group toward Domhain, fighting several times and coming up with an idea to create wolven costumes to scare Rhin's warriors. Once in Domhain, he helps fight against Rhin not on the battle field, but with Brina in the healer's tent. When he discovers that Cywen is alive, he goes into Cambren to save her with Gar, Gwenith, Farrell, Dath, and Brina. They are guided by Coralen. They are joined by Ventos on the road but Corban kills him after discovering that Ventos was working against them. Corban is kidnapped by Braith right after that and taken to be questioned by Rhin. Upon discovering that Gar believes Corban to be the Seren Disglair, Rhin takes Corban to the other world. They see Asroth, who confirms that Corban is the Seren Disglair and commands Rhin to kill him. Corban is saved by Meical and the other Ben Elim in the other world, and by Gar, Gwenith, and his friends in the regular world. They are joined by Meical, Tukul, and the Hundred, who agree to go with them to Murias to rescue Cywen. Once in Murias, they fight against Uthas' traitor Benothi and the Kadoshim, joining with Balur One-Eye and the other Benothi. Balur is able to take the starstone axe and close the cauldron's gate as Corban finds Cywen. Balur meets Corban's group at the gates with horses as they escape, joining with Corban and the Hundred and the rest of the Jehar who were not possessed by the Kadoshim. Corban has realized that he is that Bright Star and that Calidus needs to be stopped. 

Friend of Rafe and Vonn. He often goes along with Rafe's plans and torments Corban, Dath, and Farrell. He is present when Rafe is attacked by Storm.

Daughter of Thannon and Gwenith. Sister to Corban. Apprentice to Gar. Friend of Edana. 

Is very good at throwing knives and trains with Corban on how to use a sword, though no one but she, Corban, and Dath know that. She becomes romantically involved with Edana's guardsman Ronan. Before he can formally court her, she is kidnapped with Edana and Alona and Ronan is killed by Morcant. She wants revenge but struggles knowing she won't get it. She is there when Corban discovers the secret tunnel into Brenin's fortress. She sees when Evnis leads the Jehar through the tunnel and opens the gate to Owain's men. She fights Corban on the wall, knocking him off balance and sending him hurtling over the wall. He grabs her as he falls and she falls with him. 

She and Conall both survive, she returns to her empty home with Buddai. She is watched by Calidus and Nathair. She manages to sneak into the secret tunnels of Dun Careg, hoping that her family is still hiding there, but instead finds Pendathran. He has been kept prisoner by Evnis. She frees Pendathran and helps him escape the keep. When Nathair and Owain's warriors march to meet Rhin, Cywen is forced to go with them and to stay by Conall's side. She tries several times to kill Evnis, Conall, and Morcant, but is unsuccessful. She nearly escapes but is stopped by Conall. Her guard is transferred to Veradis, they begin to like each other quite a bit. When Nathair leaves to march to Murias, Cywen goes with his group and is watched by Alcyon. They become friends of a sort, or at least she's glad when he's not killed. When Calidus prepares to open a gate for the Kadoshim with the cauldron, he needs a living sacrifice. Alcyon cuts Cywen's bonds and hides her from sight so that she is not that sacrifice. She soon discovers that Corban and Gwenith have come for her and escape Murias with them. 

Son of Pendathran. 

When Owain lays siege to Brenin's fortress, Daglar brings his warband to help. They come up behind Owain's forces as Pendathran leads forces from the other direction, sandwiching Owain's warriors between them. But they are overrun by Owain and Pendathran is pushed back. Daglar and his men are killed and Daglar's body is thrown at the gates of the fortress.

Son of Mordwyr. Brother to Bethan. Friend of Corban. Trained as a warrior by Tarben.

Tends to be scared of everything, i.e. he believes Brina is a witch and certain caves are haunted. Begins training with Corban with a sword because he needs all the help he can get, but is very good with a bow. He takes his Warrior's Trial and passes, receiving a bow from Marrock and Tarben, but has not sat his Long Night since the fortress was under siege by Owain. Fights with the others when Nathair and Owain breach the fortress. His sister Bethan is killed but he and his father escape with Corban's group through the hidden tunnel. 

He travels with Edana's group, fighting with them and losing his father on the way to Domhain. When Corban travels to Murias to find Cywen, Farrell goes with him. 

Vin Thalun raider. Brother of Thaan. 

Captured in Tenebral and brought to Aquilus by Veradis and Krelis. Gives information that the new King of the Vin Thalun is meeting with one of Aquilus' barons, leading to Nathair meeting with Calidus and bartering an alliance on behalf of his father. Deinon is released to take information of this alliance back to Lykos.

When his brother Thaan is killed by Orgull, Deinon takes Orgull as his own personal punching bag. He tortures the man in between Orgull's fights. After Maquin and Orgull frees the pit fighters and fights the Vin Thalun, Deinon kills Orgull and Jehad before being killed by Maquin.

One of Owain's warriors. He likes to use Shield when riding. When Owain goes to meet Rhin in combat, Rhin has several tricks up her sleeve. Owain's forces are quickly overtaken, but Drust gets help from Cywen. She gives him her horse, taking Shield back from him, and tells him to ride south where Pendathran is forming a rebellion. 

Friend of Corban

His family is murdered the night of Marrock's wedding by Camlin on Braith's orders. This leads to the capture of Camlin and the subsequent hunting of Braith and his men in the Darkwood.

Rightful Queen of Ardan, her throne was stolen by Owain and then by Rhin. Daughter of Brenin and Alona. Friend of Cywen. 

She is taken hostage by Braith's men with Cywen and Alona. During that time, her guardsman Ronan is killed by Morcant. The women are later rescued by Marrock - led by Storm - but her mother dies after being shot by an arrow. After this, her father becomes depressed and his attitude toward Edana changes. When the fortress is breached by Nathair and Owain and her father is killed, Edana is guarded by Halion and escapes through the secret tunnel with Corban's group. Would often sneak Corban and Cywen into the fortress to overhear conversations they should not have been privy to and kept the siblings informed of what was happening with her parents. 

She travels with her guard to Domhain, fighting several times with her group and losing several people, before receiving refuge from Eremon. He agrees to fight against Rhin only when Rhin threatens Domhain and Edana agrees to marry his son Lorcan. When they find out that Cywen is alive, she tells Corban to go rescue her. As the situation in Domhain degrades, she is forced to flee with Lorcan, Roisin, and their guards. They go to a ship prepared for them by Eremon but are stopped by Conall, who has taken control of Domhain and wants to get rid of both Roisin and Lorcan. Edana's group fights against Conall's group, but most of them get to safety on the boat. She escapes with Roisin, Lorcan, Camlin, Vonn, and Baird, but Halion is left on the quay and Marrock is killed. 

Son of the Baron of Ripa. Brother to Krelis and Veradis. 

Expected to become Counsellor to his brother Krelis when he becomes Baron after their father. Is very well read and knowledgeable. 

Begins to work with Fidele, researching the God-War prophecy for her. 

The Ben-Elim, meaning "Sons of the Mighty", fight for him. He is the All-Father, creating the Ben-Elim and Asroth as his Captain. Asroth betrayed him and turned some of the Ben-Elim, creating his own fighting force called the Kadoshim. Elyon and Asroth warred against each other until Asroth sent the starstone to the mortal world and gateways between the mortal realm and the Otherworld were created. Then Elyon destroyed the world in the Scourging and turned his back on what was left. It is not known where he is, though the Ben-Elim continute to fight the Kadoshim in the Otherworld. It is prophecied that soon the God-War will return to the mortal world and avatars will fight for the gods. The Black Sun for Asroth and The Bright Star for Elyon.

King of Domhain. Wife of Roisin. Father of Halion, Conall, Coralen, Maeve, and Lorcan - probably others.

He does not come to either the King's Council or the meeting with Brenin during Midwinter, sending people in his stead. To the meeting with Brenin he sent the legendary warrior Rath and his warband, called the Degad.

He still rules but is old, lazy, and obsessed with women. He gives Edana refuge and does go up against Rhin, but only after Edana agrees to marry his only legitimate child, Lorcan. When Domhain is under siege by Cambren and Rhin offers up a new king, Eremon's son Conall, Eremon does not think the people will wait long before opening their doors and hurries to find safe passage away from Domhain for both Edana and Lorcan. He was right, his daughter Maeve kills him that evening.

Benothi giant who is able to dream true dreams. She warns Nemain that the Black Sun is coming for the cauldron. 

Currently rules of Ardan for Rhin, and oversees Narvon with Morcant's help. Previous counsellor to Brenin. Husband to the late Fain. Father to Vonn. Brother of the late Gethin. Sworn to Asroth.

When he found out that his brother had betrothed him to Fain, he swore himself to Asroth and made a vow to make Rhin High Queen of the Banished Lands. He continually works toward that goal, doing what he is told needs to be done. He searches for the book and the cauldron to heal his wife Fain, who is dying of illness. When he is unable to help her and she dies, he becomes worse than ever. He orchestrates the murder of Dylan's family and kills Owain's son Uthar himself while setting Marrock up. He helps in the kidnapping of Alona and Edana. When Owain lays siege to Brenin's fortress, he escorts the Jehar into the fortress and opens the gates to Owain's men. He is directly responsible for the death of Brenin. He has been told to serve Nathair, so his allegiance changes from Brenin to Nathair immediately. 

Evnis swears to be loyal to Nathair, awkward since he's already done the same for Rhin and Asroth. He facilitates a meeting between Rhin and Nathair. When Nathair and Owain ride to face Rhin's warriors, Evnis turns traitor again and betrays Owain to fight for Rhin. Once Owain is dead and Rhin is Queen of Ardan, she places Evnis in charge of Evnis to rule in her interest. 

Wife of Evnis. Mother of Vonn. 

Dies from an illness, though Evnis tries to prolong her life by finding the book and the cauldron.

Blacksmith's apprentice (but not Thannon's apprentice). Friend to Corban. Professes himself in love with Coralen. 

Around the same age as Corban, they are both on the Rowan Field at the same time and assist in the hunt when Storm's mother is killed. Farrell's father is labeled a coward and Farrell is constantly bullied by Rafe and Crain because of this. When the two of them are beating up Farrell, Corban steps in to stop them. Rafe turns on Corban and is attacked by Storm, leading to her being sent to the Baglun Forest. Farrell later does his Warrior's Trial but is not able to sit his Long Night since Owain has laid siege to the fortress. When the fortress is breached, Farrell fights in the great hall and escapes through the secret tunnel with Corban's group. He uses Thannon's war hammer as a weapon in that time and later, Corban tells him to keep it. It's too heavy for Corban anyway. He promises to avenge Thannon's death with the hammer. 

He travels with Edana's group, fighting with them and losing his father on the way to Domhain. He becomes one of Corban's wolven men, fighting with a wolf pelt and steel claws. When Corban travels to Murias to find Cywen, Farrell goes with him. 

Regentof Tenebral. Wife of the late Aquilus. Mother of Nathair. 

She is suspicious of her son's actions when he is told not to deal with the Vin Thalun and counsels him to obey his father and king. Nathair does not listen to her advice. 

She acts as Regent of Tenebral while Nathair is away, choosing to shut down the fighting pits of the VIn Thalun. She works with Elktor, Veradis' brother, to find the prophecy of the God-War. When Lykos is not able to do what he wants, he conspires with Calidus and is given a talisman that allows him to control Fidele completely. He rapes her and forces her to marry him, but she is saved from the marriage when Orgull and Maquin release the prisoners of the fighting pits and fight against the Vin Thalun. Orgull is killed, and Maquin injures Lykos but Lykos gets away. Maquin grabs Fidele's hand and tries to get them to safety. 

Garisan ben Tukul, called Gar. Son of Tukul, Lord of Telassar and leader of the Hundred. Sworn protector of the Seren Disglair. Stablemaster to Brenin. Friend of Thannon and Gwenith. Apprentices Cywen. Trains Corban with the sword. 

Gar is originally from Helveth but found a home in Ardan when his family was killed. He has a limp of unknown origin, and fights differently than the warrior's of Ardan. When he trains Corban, Corban adopts much of his fighting style. He knows Meical and trusts Brenin, but has secrets that he keeps from everyone else but Thannon and Gwenith. He convinces Corban's parents to leave for Drassil as soon as Corban's Long Night is over, but Owain lays siege to the fortress and they are unable to go. When the fortress is breached and Thannon killed, Gar enters the great hall and fights Sumur, the leader of the Jehar. It becomes clear that Gar was raised by the Jehar but left for some reason. He refuses to acknowledge Sumur as Lord of Telassar, saying that his father is the only Lord of Telassar that he recognizes. He escapes the fortress with Corban's group through the secret tunnel.

On the road to Domhain, Gar and Gwenith explain to Corban that he is the Seren Disglair, chosen avatar of Elyon. He tries to convince Corban to go to Drassil for his own safety, but Corban refuses to leave Edana. They travel with Edana all the way to Domhain with Edana until they learn that Cywen is still alive. Then they leave Edana in Domhain with her guard and travel north to rescue Cywen. When Corban is kidnapped, they stage a resue to get him out of Rhin's stronghold and Gar finds his father and the rest of the Hundred. Together, they travel to Murias, remove the starstone axe and close the cauldron's gate, and rescue Cywen. They leave, some of the giants joining them and Gar is able to convince the unpossessed Jehar to join Corban for now.

Rhin's battlechief. Fights with Veradis' shield wall to claim Domhain for Rhin, eventually laying siege to Eremon's stronghold and claiming the city and the rest of Domhain for Rhin. 

Romar's estranged wife. Mother of Romar's son, Haelan. 

When the Dal Gadrai comes to tell Gerda of Jael's plan to claim the Isiltir throne, Gerda believes them and gathers her forces. They nearly defeat Jael, but he is joined by the Vin Thalun and they breach the walls. Gerda asks the Vin Thalun to take Haelan to safety, but she is taken captive, tortured, and killed.

Betrothes his daughter to King Owain's son Uthar. It is when they travel for Kyla's wedding that Alona and Edana is kidnapped. When Owain exacts vengeance for the murder of his son, he first sacks Badun, then delivers Gethin's head to Brenin.

Has a home near Drassil. Agreed to house the horses of the Hundred while they were at Drassil and was allowed to breed the horses. He bred two bloodlines, keeping one pureblooded. When Isiltir is taken by Jael, Tahir takes Haelan to Gramm and requests refuge. 

King of Carnutas. Son of the late Mandros.

When Mandros runs from Tenebral after Aquilus' death, Gundul makes a deal with Nathair. He will fight with Nathair's men and help facilitate the capture of his father as long as they kill Mandros right then and recognize Gundul as the new King of Carnutan. 

Wife of Thannon. Mother of Corban and Cywen. Friend of Gar. 

Teaches Cywen how to throw knives with deadly accuracy and has knives made for both of them by Thannon. She takes Storm from the great hall for Storm's protection when Corban is called to duel Rafe. She brings Gar back with her, to find the great hall under attack and her husband dead. She escapes the great hall with Corban but refuses to leave the fortress without Cywen. She only leaves through the secret tunnell when Marrock reveals that Cywen fell from the fortress wall with Conall. Once they set sail, she tells Corban that she has some secrets she has been keeping that he needs to know about. 

Travels with Edana's group to Domhain, staying until they learn that Cywen is still alive. She leaves with Corban to rescue Cywen, traveling first to Cambren and then to Murias. While in Murias, Gwenith is killed by Calidus.

Son of Romar and Gerda. The rightful King of Isiltir who has had his throne stolen by his cousin Jael. 

When Jael comes to claim the throne and breach the walls of the keep, Haelan is evacuated by Tahir. They travel to Gramm and ask for refuge. 

Brother of Conall. Half brother of Coralen and Maeve. Illegitimate son of Eremon, King of Domhain. Warrior trainer of Corban. Guard to Princess Edana, rightful Queen of Ardan.

Excellent swordsman and known for fighting smart. He and his brother Conall request sanctuary from Brenin and eventually become a member of Brenin's warband. Halion is present when they capture Camlin and later when they rescue the women from Braith's kidnapping. He trains Corban on the Rowan Field and gifts Corban a spear at his Warrior's Trial. When Tull dies, Halion becomes Brenin's First-Sword. Fights to protect Edana when the fortress is breached and the great hall attacked, helping Edana escape through the secret tunnel that Corban knew of. Once they've set sail, he decides they will take Edana to his father for her protection. He is the bastard son of the King of Domhain. 

As guard of Edana, he escorts her to Domhain to ask his father to give her refuge. We learn that his mother was one of Eremon's mistresses, and that Eremon treated both Conall and Halion, as well as their mother well. When Eremon first married Roisin, that did not change. But when Roisin had her own son she became paranoid about Eremon's succession and Halion's mother was killed in an "accident" that everyone believes was caused by Roisin. Conall lost his temper, leading to the two of them being sent to Ardan by their father. When they arrive in Domhain, Eremon does agree to give Edana sanctuary and to fight against Rhin, but only after Rhin comes for Domhain and Edana agrees to marry his son Lorcan. Halion fights with Domhain's forces and when they retreat, he is in the keep as Rhin's forces lay siege. When Eremon evacuates Edana and Lorcan, Halion goes with them. But Conall comes after them and Halion goes up against him, trying to get his brother to see reason and to join him once again. It doesn't work, Halion is poisoned by Quinn's poisoned blade and is overwhelmed by Rhin's men. Edana is forced to leave, leaving Halion behind.

Brenin's Loremaster.

He travels with Brenin to the King's Council and then later to the meeting at Midwinter and Kyla's wedding in Narvon - even though he hates traveling. When Brenin's fortress is breached by Nathair and Owain, Heb escapes through the secret tunnel with Corban's group, even using his hidden Elemental abilities to create a mist to cover their movement. 

He travels with Edana and Corban when they leave Ardan. They travel into Cambren and toward Domhain. Brina and Heb use Evnis' book to begin teaching Corban elemental magic. When they run into a group of Benothi giants, Heb uses elemental magic to light a branch on fire. This causes Uthas to target Heb and he kills him before the fight is over. Heb and Anwarth share a cairn.

He is party to some of the plans Evnis makes against Brenin - including the murder of Dylan's family and Evnis' search for the book. He has a vendetta against Corban and Thannon, who fights Helfach and wins after telling Helfach that Rafe needs to lay off. Especially after Rafe is attacked by Storm. When the fortress is breached, he and Rafe try to kill Corban but Helfach is killed by Storm.

VIn Thalun who trains Maquin and Orgull for the fighting pits. He is killed by Maquin when Maquin frees the pit fighters and goes after Lykos.

Nephew to Romar. Cousin to Kastell.

Hates Kastell, according to Jael, because of Kastell's father's "transgressions". This is not helped by Kastell kneeing him in the groin in front of the warriors at the King's Council. He constantly spreads rumors about Kastell to turn opinions against him and even tries to have him killed. This leads to Kastell joining the Dal Gadrai and leaving his uncle's hold. Jael becomes a good friend of Nathair, even gifting Nathair a horse. When they fight the Hunen giants and Romar is killed by Alcyon, Jael tries to kill Kastell and claim the throne of Isilitir for himself. 

Jael travels with Calidus from the Forn Forest part of the way to Isiltir, before continuing on to Isiltir. He plans to claim the throne of Isiltir for himself, potentially killing Romar's son or possibly taking the throne as Haelan's regent - but no one believes that Jael will allow the boy to live for long in either scenario. He demands Haelan be turned over to him, fighting Gerda's men and the Dal Gadrai when Gerda refuses to turn her son over. Jael nearly retreats but is helped by the Vin Thalun, who are able to scale the towers of the keep. Haelan escapes with Tahir but Jael captures Gerda. He tortures her and eventually she is killed. 

Fellow pit fighter that Maquin meets. When Maquin frees the pit fighters and goes after Lykos, Jevad fights against Deinon with Orgull. Deinon kills them both before being killed by Maquin.

Nephew of Romar. Cousin to Jael. Has a shieldman, Maquin. Member of the Dal Gadrai. 

Jael hates him because of his father's "transgressions" though Kastell has no idea what those transgressions are. He becomes friends to Veradis during the King's Council, Veradis even saves his and Maquin's life once when Jael had them attacked. After several tries to smooth over his relationship with Jael for their uncle's sake, Kastell and Maquin join the Dal Gadrai, which only allow members who have killed a giant. They are part of the group that captures and questions a giant and is told that the God-War is coming. They are present when Veradis comes to help get rid of the Hunen giants. Kastell watches when Alcyon kills his uncle, Romar. He is then attacked by Jael, who wants Romar's throne for himself, and his status is unknown. When Maquin wakes up, he and Orgull search the bodies in the tunnel for survivors. Kastell is not one of the survivors but they do find his body.

Eldest son and heir of the Baron of Ripa. Brother of Elktor and Veradis.

Trained with Aquilus' warband before returning to Ripa. He and Veradis escort Deinon to Aquilus for questioning when Deinon is captured. He sees his brother Veradis again when he and Nathair come to speak to their father. In that time, Veradis makes it clear that he is loyal to Nathair and Krelis warns him to be sure that his loyalty is deserved.

Works with Fidele to get rid of the VIn Thalun's fighting pits in Tenebral.

Daughter of Gethin. Niece of Evnis. Betrothed to Uthar, Prince of Narvon. 

Alona and Edana are kidnapped when they are in Narvon to celebrate Kyla and Uthar's wedding. Her father is later killed by Owain for revenge against Uthar's death.

Son of Eremon, King of Domhain, and his wife Roisin. Half-brother to Conall and Halion, Coralen, and Maeve. 

Eremon agrees to fight against Rhin, but only after Edana agrees to be married to Lorcan once he's old enough. But when Eremon believes that Domhain will fall to Rhin, he arranges to have Edana and Lorcan evacuated. He is killed before they leave and Roisin decides to evacuate with them. They ride with Baird, Quinn, some of Domhain's warriors, and Edana's guard to a waiting ship but Conall pursues them. He wants them to give Lorcan up. Quinn plans to do just that, knocking the boy out and carrying him off the boat, but is stopped by Camlin and Baird. Baird manages to carry Lorcan back to the boat before they sail.

Battle-chief of Braster, King of Helveth. 

After the battle where Romar is killed, the Dal Gadrai escape the tunnel and prepare to warn Gerda in Isiltir. But they go to Braster first to tell him what happened and so Braster can warn Meical. But Lothar kills Braster, blaming the king's death of the Dal Gadrai. Nathair believes that Lothar will be put in Braster's place. 

King of the Vin Thalun.

The first person to bring the different tribes of the Vin Thalun together under one banner, becoming their first king. When he meets Nathair, he reveals that he has also had dreams like Nathair. He pledges himself to Nathair and becomes one of Nathair's closest advisors. Nathair uses the Vin Thalun to ferry his warriors to where they need to go quickly and pledges to build Lykos more ships for this express reason.

Lykos has nightmares sent to him as messages from Calidus. They instruct Lykos to bring the Vin Thalun to Ardan to meet with Nathair, then they are sent to Isiltir to help Jael. If not for the Vin Thalun, Jael would not have succeeded in claiming the throne. In the aftermath of the battle, Lykos is able to collect lots of men as slaves for his fighting pits. He is then sent to Tenebral with a talisman from Calidus with which to control Fidele. He uses the talisman at all times. He rapes Fidele and forces her to marry him, reopening the fighting pits as well. When Peritus and Armatus try to take the regency from Fidele, he has them captured. They were supposed to be executed but Orgull freed them instead. Armatus was caught and killed but Peritus disappeared. The day that Lykos and Fidele were to be married, Orgull and Maquin freed the other pit fighters and went against the Vin Thalun. Lykos tried to run with Fidele but was caught by Maquin. Lykos dropped his talisman during the fight, freeing Fidele. She took her chance and stabbed him. She escaped with Maquin, but Lykos disappeared while they were distracted.

Illegitimate daughter of Eremon, King of Domhain. Half-sister to Conall, Halion, and Coralen. 

She works as a serving girl in Eremon's keep. When Rhin's forces lay siege and Rhin offers them Conall as king instead of Eremon, Maeve stabs her father in the throat. She is then killed by Rath.

Previous King of Carnutan. Father of Gundul.

Is present at the King's Council but does not believe the prophecy and is derisive to anyone who does. Returns to Tenebral for Midwinter and sees the sun go dark at midday. Later, he is brought to speak to Aquilus and Nathair alone. He flees for Carnutan quickly afterward and it is discovered that Aquilus has been killed and Nathair stabbed. It is assumed that Mandros is the perpetrator. Tenebral attacks Carnutan and Mandros is taken prisoner by Veradis with the help of Mandros' son Gundul. Mandros claims that he did not attack either Aquilus or Nathair. That Aquilus was dead when he arrived in the room and Nathair stabbed himself. Veradis does not believe him and beheads him without trial.

Shieldman to Kastell. Member of the Dal Gadrai. 

When Kastell's parents were killed, Maquin rescued Kastell and became his shieldman, staying next to him while Kastell was raised by his uncle. He tries to counsel Kastell to be more welcoming and amiable to other warriors. Joins the Dal Gadrai with Kastell and is part of the group that captures a giant and is told that they're preparing for the God-War. Is present when Romar is killed by Alcyon. Kastell last sees him fighting the Jehar when Maquin is knocked over a giant cadaver.

Orgull survived the fight in the tunnels, saving Maquin in the process. They find one other survivor, a Dal Gadrai named Tahir. They escape the tunnels and plan to ride to Isiltir as fast as they can so they can warn Gerda about Jael's treachery. But first, Orgull must tell Braster what happened in the tunnels. While he and Maquin explain the situation to Braster, his Battle-Chief Lothar kills Braster and blames in on the Gadrai. They must flee and ride to Isiltir, where Gerda believes their story. They stay and help Gerda defend her son from Jael's men, but when the Vin Thalun join Jael they are overwhelmed. Orgull and Maquin cause a distraction as Tahir escapes with Haelan. Orgull and Maquin are taken as slaves by the Vin Thalun and forced to fight in the fighting pits. Maquin does well, though he constantly struggles with his conscience. He is kept fighting by his need to find and kill Jael. In the fight that would allow Maquin to win his freedom, he is put up against Orgull. Orgull asks Maquin to kill him, it would be a mercy, but Maquin fights with Orgull instead. They free the other pit fighters and face the Vin Thalun. Maquin kills Herak then goes for Lykos. He forces Lykos to let go of the talisman that controls Fidele and Fidele stabs Lykos. Maquin turns to see Deinon kill Orgull, he kills Deinon in retaliation. But in that time, Lykos disappears. Maquin grabs Fidele's hand and the two of them run. 

Huntsman and guardsman to Edana. Son of the late Rhagor. Nephew of Adona and Pendathran. 

A pivotal member of Brenin's household. He is there when Storm's mother is killed and argues in tacit favor of Corban raising Storm. Is taken hostage when Braith rescues Camlin but, due to being seen by Corban and Cywen, he is later released. He mounts a rescue for Alona, following Storm as she tracks the kidnapped women, and carries his aunt to safety once the women are rescued. He becomes friends with Camlin after Camlin leaves the Darkwood. Marks Dath as an excellent bowman and, along with Tarben, gifts Dath a bow at his Warrior's Trial. He is on the wall when he sees Evnis bring the Jehar into the fortress and open the gates to Owain's warriors. He yells for Cywen to alert Brenin but watches her go over the wall with Conall instead. He runs to the hall and yells to his uncle that the walls have been breached and that Evnis is a traitor. He escapes with Corban's group through the secret tunnel. 

Marrock escapes with Edana and Corban, but does not think they should go to Domhain. He thinks they should stay and try to take back Ardan but is overruled by Edana. He travels with Edana, losing a hand in the process but learning to fight with a buckler strapped to that arm. When Domhain falls to Rhin and Edana is evacuated, he goes with her. Conall finds them and Marrock fights against his men. When the ship sails, he is not able to get onto the boat and is left on the quay. Conall offers Edana a trade: her cousin Marrock for Lorcan. When Edana says nothing, Conall kills Marrock.

Counsellor to Aquilus. 

Discovers the prophecy of the God-War. Is disliked by Nathair. When Aquilus is killed, Meical flees Tenebral and has a meeting with Brenin in Ardan. He also speaks to Gar and Corban's parents, telling them not to trust Nathair or anyone else from Tenebral. He tells them he will go to Drassil to make sure preparations are underway.

Meical rides to collect the Hundred, taking them to meet the Seren Disglair. They find him in Rhin's keep and help Corban's friends to rescue Corban from Rhin's clutches. Meical even goes to the other world to gather the Ben Elim to protect Corban from the Kadoshim in the other world. He leads Corban and the Hundred to Murias to rescue Cywen but reminds them that they do not have the numbers to defeat Nathair that day. They find Cywen in the cauldron room and a fight ensues. Meical goes against Calidus but not before Calidus is able to kill Gwenith. He and the other Jehar distract Calidus and the Kadoshim so that Corban can get away. They meet up later, bringing some of Sumur's Jehar and several Benothi giants into their group. 

Benothi giant in charge of guarding the cauldron. He raises and cares for the wyrms that guard the cauldron. 

When Nathair and Calidus enter the cauldron room, Morc attacks. He is injured by Uthas but not killed. Calidus uses him as a living sacrifice to open the cauldron's gate to the Kadoshim.

First-Sword of Rhin. Lover of Rhin. 

Fights in the Court of Swords for Rhin when she demands that Brenin return to her two people who asked him for sanctuary. He fights Tull and loses, but is not killed. Instead, Tull only gives him a scar under his eye. He is later part of Rhin's kidnapping of Alona and Edana. He kills Tull and nearly kills Camlin when Marrock's men come out of the forest and rescue the women. It is believed that Morcant got away and returned to Cambren.

After Owain is captured and killed, Conall challenges Morcant for the title of First-Sword and Morcant loses. He is not killed, for being loyal to Rhin. She leaves him with Evnis to help control Narvon while she is gone. 

Father of Bethan and Dath. 

After his wife's death, he became a severe alcoholic, often drinking himself into unconsciousness. When Owain's warriors march to attack, Corban stops at Dath's home to warn them. Corban and Dath rouse Mordwyr and lead him into the fortress. Later, when the fortress is breached, Mordwyr holds the body of his daughter. He is convinced to escape with Dath and Corban through the secret tunnel.

He escapes Ardan with Edana and Corban but is killed trying to steal a ship for them to use to sail to Domhain.

Prince of Tenebral. Son of Aquilus and Fidele. 

Quickly becomes close to Veradis when Veradis is made a member of his warband. He meets Calidus and fosters an alliance on behalf of his father, using the Vin Thalun at his own discretion whenever he felt it was beneficial, against explicit orders from his father. Has been having dreams where a mysterious man asks for his help, recently wanting Nathair to find the cauldron, leading Nathair to believe that he is The Bright Star and the mysterious man is Elyon. Trains his warband to use a shield wall, which is highly effective when fighting giants, allowing them to help defeat the Hunen giants among others. He is stabbed during Midwinter, claiming that Mandros stabbed him and killed his father before fleeing. He gives orders that Mandros is to be hunted down and quietly tells Veradis to kill Mandros without trial once he's taken prisoner. With the help of Calidus, he gains the allegiance of the Jehar. He gives Calidus free reign to use the Jehar as needed to claim Dagda's axe for Nathair, leading to Romar's death. He visits Brenin, in a quest to track down Meical and secure alliances, but instead brings the Jehar into the fortress, opens the gates to Owain, and ensuring Brenin's death. Any who oppose him will pay.

Nathair stays in Ardan with Sumur until Veradis and Calidus join them. He brings Evnis into his trusted group of counsellors. He agrees to fight with Owain against Rhin but betrays Owain, causing Owain to be killed and Rhin to take Narvon and Ardan as her own. He sleeps with Rhin, stating that she can be "persuasive". He marches to Murias, leaving Veradis and the shield wall with Cambren's forces but taking Alcyon, Calidus, Sumur and the Jehar, and Cywen with him. When they storm Murias and make their way to the cauldron, Calidus using a live sacrifice to open the cauldron's gate. Nathair did not expect this and is shocked. He is even more shocked when the gate is open and Kadoshim enter the bodies of the Jehar, possessing them. Corban last sees him in the cauldron room, sitting with his head in his hands. 

Queen of the Benothi giants. Alive before the Scourging, once married to King Skald. Able to live such a long life from drinking from the starstone cup. 

She has made it her mission to guard the cauldron against the Black Sun. When Nathair arrives at her gates, she is prepared for him and sends her ravens against Nathair. What she is not prepared for is Uthas betrayal. He kills Nemain and opens the gates of Murias  for Nathair.

Orgull killed Deinon's brother Thaan in the battle, so Deinon makes it his mission to torture Orgull as much as possible without killing him. Orgull wins an exhibition fight and is given a reward - to kill the traitors Armatus and Peritus. Instead, Orgull frees the men but is quickly captured by the VIn Thalun. He is nearly killed, but Deinon won't allow it. He wants to torture Orgull more. When Orgull is placed in a match against Maquin, he asks Maquin to kill him as a mercy. But Maquin fights with Orgull instead, against the Vin Thalun and freeing the other pit fighters in the process. Orgull faces off against Deinon but is killed. Maquin kills Deinon afterward and places Orgull's battle axe with his body.

Attends the King's Council but does not ally with Aquilus, choosing to wait to see what happens on Midwinter before making a decision. At Midwinter, he agrees that his son Uthar should be married to Gethin's daughter, Kyla. When the Darkwood is cleared out and the spring comes, Brenin and his entourage come to Narvon for the wedding. Evnis kills Uthar, disguised as Marrock, causing Owain to declare war on Brenin. He kills Gethin as Badur is sacked, then lays siege to Brenin's fortress. When Daglararrives, Owain kills his men and Daglar, throwing his dead body at the gate for his father to find. HIs warriors are later let into the fortress by Evnis' men and attack Brenin, killing him. He does not believe that Rhin orchestrated the whole situation.

When Rhin marches on and captures Narvon, Owain makes a deal with Nathair. If Nathair faces Rhin with Owain, Owain will join with Nathair. Owain agrees but conspires against Owain with Rhin. Once the battle starts and Owain is caught between Nathair and Rhin, Nathair reveals his treachery. Owain is forced to flee into the forest where Braith finds him and captures him. Rhin offers Owain a deal. She will not kill him as long as he agrees to serve under her. He can even keep Narvon. Owain refuses and is killed.

Leads a warband for Brenin and is put in charge of finding and punishing whomever killed Dylan's family while Brenin attends the War-Council. He later tries to rescue his sister when she is kidnapped, but is forced to return to warn and protect Brenin when he believes it is Owain who had her kidnapped. He helps to evacuate their people before Owain attacks them. He leads the charge against Owain, sandwiching Owain's warriors between his warband and Daglar's, but is beaten back by Owain's men and forced to sit while his son is killed. When the fortress is under siege and Corban is challenged to a duel, he speaks up in favor of Corban and Storm but it has no effect on Brenin. 

When Cywen searches the tunnel, hoping that her family is hiding there, she hears Pendathran asking for water. He had been captured and imprisoned by Evnis. Cywen frees him, hiding him in Dath's cabin until she can help him to escape. Rumor is that he is now in the south of Ardan forming a rebellion. 

Aquilus' First-Sword.

After Aquilus' death, he serves Nathair. He is present when Mandros is killed.

Peritus works with Fidele to close the Vin Thalun's fighting pits and generally wants the Vin Thalun eradicated (not just from Tenebral). When Lykos controls Fidele, Peritus is one of the only people who notice there is something wrong. He tries to take control over the regency but the Vin Thalun have him and Armatus arrested for treason. They are put in the fighting pits as a reward for the exhibition fight: whoever wins the fight gets to execute them. But when Orgull wins, he cuts the chains holding Peritus and Armatus instead. They try to fight their way out of the pits with help from members of the crowd. Peritus escapes and hasn't been seen since, but Armatus and Orgull are captured again. 

Guard Captain for Eremon. He likes to rub poison onto his blades. He is unliked by most people, especially Coralen. 

He is sent with Lorcan when Lorcan is evacuated from Eremon's keep but Conall finds them before the ship can sail. He offers Quinn and the other guard members to give Lorcan and Roisin to him and they will be able to return to Domhain without consequence. Quinn takes him up on the offer, knocking Lorcan out and carrying him off the ship. Camlin stands against him, as does Halion, and Lorcan is returned to the boat eventually. Quinn is killed but he manages to cut Halion with his poisoned blade first, so that Halion weakens as he fights Conall's men.

Son of Helfach. 

Torments anyone he thinks is weaker than himself, including Corban, Dath, and Farrell. When he is stopped from beating Farrell by Corban and then tries to kill Corban, he is attacked by Storm. This leads to Storm being sent to the Baglun Forest and Rafe losing his Sword and Spear - which is disgraceful. When Owain declares war on Brenin, Rafe's Sword and Spear are returned to him. He then challenges Corban to a duel. He is quickly and easily beaten by Corban, but when the fortress is breached later, he and his father attack Corban again. Storm kills Helfach in this attack, but not Rafe.

Rafe works with Nathair, traveling with his warriors toward Domhain because he can identify Corban and wouldn't have a problem doing so. When Eremon's forces fight Rhin, Rafe is taken prisoner by Coralen and put in Domhain's dungeon. Corban sees as Coralen takes Rafe into custody and Rafe lets it slip that both Conall and Cywen are alive. In the dungeon, Rafe sees Edana and Lorcan enter a tunnel but not come back out. He is able to show Conall how Edana and Lorcan escaped the keep.

King of Tarbesh

Allies with Aquilus at the King's Council. Gets aid from Nathair's warband against the Shekam giants, allowing them to test out how the shield wall works. 

Legendary warrior from Domhain who leads a group of warriors called the Degad. Brother to King Eremon of Domhain. 

He comes to the meeting with Brenin at Midwinter in the king's stead. 

When he and his warband discover Benothi giants have been in Domhain, they hunt the group down and find not only Uthas and his group, but Corban and Edana as well. They kill most of Uthas' group but three of them get away. Rath escorts Edana to see Eremon, becoming familiar with her guard and Corban in the process. He gladly accepts Corban's idea to dress as wolven and scare Rhin's warriors, they do it several times. But when Veradis' shield wall forces Rath and Eremon's forces to retreat and Rhin offers Conall up as an option for king, Eremon arranges to have Edana and Lorcan evacuated. They send Baird with them, but Rath stays with Eremon to keep up appearances and not look suspicious. When Maeve stabs her father Eremon in the throat and kills him to make Conall king, Rath kills her. They place Eremon's body in a room and the Degad guard him as if he is still alive. Veradis' warband finds them and they fight, but Conall is the one who kills Rath, the other Degad fall quickly afterward.

Is impressed by Tull when he fights, and is beaten by, Tull at the King's Council. Later, he accompanies Nathair to Ardan and learns that Tull was killed. When Brenin's fortress is breached, Rauca calls the warriors to form a shield-wall against Thannon, leading to Thannon's death. Killed by Gar after Thannon died.

Is there when Evnis makes his oath to Asroth. She plans to use Evnis to become High Queen. Attends the King's Council but does not ally with Tenebral. Attends Brenin's meeting at Midsummer and demands that Brenin return two refugees that he'd given sanctuary to her but Brenin refuses. When Rhin calls for Court of Swords, her lover and warrior Morcant fights Tull and loses. She makes plans to turn Brenin and Owain against each other, arranging for the kidnapping of Alona and Edana as well as the murder of Uthar. She wants Brenin and Owain to destroy one another so she can sweep in and take their lands for themselves. Owain is fooled and declares war on Brenin despite Brenin trying to show Owain the truth.

After Owain takes Ardan, Rhin conquers Narvon and then marches toward Ardan. When Owain marches to meet her, he is captured and killed. Rhin becomes Queen of Cambren, Ardan, and Narvon. Conall becomes her FIrst-Sword and she marches with Nathain into Cambren, escorting Nathair part of the way before he continues toward Murias. She sends her Battle-Chief Geraint and Veradis toward Domhain so she can rule the entirety of the western Banished Lands, she leaves Evnis in charge of Ardan and Narvon, with help in Narvon from Morcant. Braith she sends to capture Corban and kill Edana. He succeeds in half of his task, bringing Corban to be questioned by Rhin. When Corban reveals that some believe him to be the Seren Disglair, Rhin takes him to the other world to ask Asroth. Asroth confirms and orders Rhin to kill Corban in the real world but they are attacked by the Ben Elim and she is unable to get the job done. She flees her keep with Conall and Braith, going back to Domhain. She ends the siege by giving Domhain a new option for their king: Conall. They open the gates the next day and Rhin has succeeded in taking all of the western Banished Lands but fail to kill Edana and Lorcan.

Wife of King Eremon of Domhain. Mother of Lorcan. 

Became obsessed with securing the throne for her son and "accidents" started to happen around her, killing anyone who may have aspirations for the throne. One of those accidents happened to Halion and Conall's mother, leading to their going to Ardan. Roisin does not want to interfere or get involved in the war with Rhin, at least not until Rhin comes for Domhain and her own son is at risk. When Eremon believes that Rhin will take Domhain, he arranges to have Lorcan and Edana escape on a boat, but Roisin will stay with him. When Eremon is killed by his daughter Maeve, Roisin changes plans and escapes with Edana and Lorcan. 

Previous King of Isiltir. Uncle of Kastell and Jael.

Allies with Aquilus at the King's Council. His starstone axe is taken by Hunen giants. He knows that his nephews are at odds and wants them to make amends, and is naive enough to believe that they have. Teams up with Braster to get rid of the Hunen and get his axe back, with help from Veradis, Calidus, and Alcyon. But he does not like the way that Mandros was killed without trial and intends to launch an investigation at a later date. When the giants are dealt with and the battle is over, he leads his men into the archway in the cliff followed by Calidus and the Jehar. Veradis is left outside. When they find the axe, Calidus claims it on Nathair's behalf. Romar refuses the claim and Alcyon kills Romar with the axe.

Shieldman to Edana. 

Ronan asks Cywen if it would be okay for him to ask her father formally for permission to court her and she says yes. But before he gets the chance, he escorts Edana into the Darkwood where she, her mother Alona, and Cywen are kidnapped by Braith and Rhin's warriors. Tull sends Ronan and another warrior to run with the women and try to escape while he and the other warriors buy them time but they do not make it far and Ronan is killed by Morcant.

Benothi giant and guard to Uthas. He and Uthas were both kidnapped and swore to serve Asroth. He killed Nemain's guard Sreng when Nathair came for the cauldron.

When the Jehar is divided, Sokar is sent with Veradis, Calidus, and Alcyon to fight the Hunen giants. Calidus is put in charge of the Jehar during that time and they follow Romar into the archway in the cliff, leaving Veradis outside the cave. Sokar and the other Jehar fight against the Gadrai while inside after Alcyon kills Romar.

Benothi giant and guard to Queen Nemain. Killed by Salach when Nathair came for the cauldron.

Although at first he is cautious to believe that Nathair is The Bright Star, he is convinced when he sees Calidus' wings. He pledges himself and the rest of the Jehar to Nathair, emptying out Telassar to follow him as a fanatic. He does not allow insult to Nathair and threatens anyway who stands against him. When they fight Brenin in the hall, he is surprised to see Gar - who he recognizes as a member of the Jehar who left Telassar. Gar does not believe that Nathair is The Bright Star and fights against Sumur. Sumur gains the upper hand but they are forced apart by other warriors and Gar is able to escape.

After traveling with Nathair through Cambren to Murias, Sumur was in the cauldron room when the gate was opened to the Kadoshim. He was possessed by one of the Kadoshim and fought the other Jehar. The Jehar learned how to kill those possessed by the Kadoshim but it is unknown if Sumur was killed.

Member of the Dal Gadrai. 

Was found alive in the tunnels after Romar was killed and traveled with Maquin and Orgull to warn Gerda about Jael. When the VIn Thalun arrived to help Jael and breached the walls of the keep, Tahir escaped through a hidden tunnel with Romar's heir Haelan. They traveled to Gramm's home and asked for refuge. 

Warrior. Serves as Dath's warrior trainer. 

Known for complaining constantly. When Tull is called away to the King's Council with Brenin, Tarben is put in charge of the Rowan Field. He trains Dath and, along with Marrock, gifts Dath a bow at his Warrior's Trial. Becomes friends with Camlin and fights with him inside the hall when the fortress is breached. Escapes through the secret tunnel with Corban's group.

King of the Sirak

Allies with Aquilus at the King's Council. When Kastell and Maquin are attacked by bandits as they leave the King's Council, the Sirak, who are nomadic people from the Sea of Grass, fight against the bandits since they'd been tracking them since leaving the council.

Brother of Deinon. Orgull kills him when the Vin Thalun help Jael claim the Isiltir throne.

When he finds out that Rafe has been bullying Corban, he demands that Rafe's father Helfach put an end to it. The two of them fight and Thannon bests Helfach, causing tensions to grow worse. When Corban is close to his Warrior's Trial, they make a sword for Brenin and a new war hammer for himself. He uses that war hammer to try to reach Brenin when the fortress gates are breached but is stopped by Rauca and the shield-wall. Thannon falls to the Tenebral warriors and dies in the hall. His body is left behind but his hammer is grabbed by Corban and given to Farrell to wield since he is the only one strong enough to use it.

When Meical rides to Drassil, where Tukul and the Hundred have been living, the Hundred ride out to join with the Seren Disglair. They find Corban in Cambren and join with Gar and Corban's friends to rescue Corban from Rhin's stronghold. They continue on to Murias and help Corban to rescue his sister before leaving Murias with many of the Telassar Jehar and some giants as well. 

First-Sword of Brenin. Legendary warrior. 

Travels with Brenin to the King's Council. During the meeting at Midwinter when Rhin forces a Court of Swords, he fights for Brenin and beats Rhin's warrior Morcant. He does not kill the warrior, but leaves him with a scar below his eye. When Alona, Edana, and Cywen are kidnapped inside the forest, he tells them to run with a few guards while he and the others draw the attackers attention and give the women time to escape. One of the attackers is Morcant, who takes his revenge against Tull and kills him with the help of Braith.

Betrothed to Gethin's daughter Kyla. When Ardan comes to celebrate their wedding, Evnis disguises himself as a guard of Narvon and kills Uthar in Uthar's room before changing his face to look like Marrock and leaving the room, making sure he is seen by everyone. When Owain discovers his son is dead and believes Marrock murdered him, he declares war on Brenin.

Benothi giant who is loyal to Rhin and to Asroth. 

He has conspired with Calidus so that when Nathair marches on Murias for the cauldron, he opens the doors the Nathair. When Nemain fights against Nathair, Uthas kills her. He is in the cauldron room when the Kadoshim possess the Jehar and Fech flies in, screaming that Uthas is a betrayer. Fech agreed to show Meical to the cauldron room as long as they killed Uthas.

Aquilus' stablemaster. Befriends Veradis when he first joins Nathair's warband. His wife and children were killed by the Vin Thalun. Doesn't trust Meical.

Leader of the Dal Gadrai. Loyal to King Romar. 

A skilled and very fast warrior who accepts Kastell and Maquin into the Dal Gadrai. The Gadrai join Romar's warriors when they hunt the Hunen. After the battle is done, they follow Romar into the archway and are attacked by the Jehar. He is cut down after Romar is killed.

Trader from Helveth who gives Corban his first practice sword free of charge. Working with Calidus, he uses a bird to send Calidus a message that Meical is in Ardan. 

Shows up in Domhain as Corban's group looks for refuge and when Corban leaves to rescue Cywen, Ventos follows them. He is found sending a message about Corban's whereabouts and Corban kills him.

First-Sword and Captain to Nathair. Son of the Baron of Ripa in Tenebral. Younger brother to Krelis and Elktor. Likes Cywen. 

Is introduced to Nathair when he and his brother bring Deinon to Aquilus and is given a spot in Nathair's warband. The two of them quickly bond and he moves up in the ranks. He earns Nathair's trust when Nathair first meets Calidus and Veradis leaps through flames to protect him. Veradis joins Nathair when they travel to Tarbesh to fight the Shekam giants and search for Telassar. After Aquilus is killed, he tracks down Mandros and kills the king with his own sword, but he is not proud of it and is haunted by Mandros accusation that Nathair killed his own father. He goes to hunt the Hunen giants with Calidus and Alcyon, he is in charge of the warband while Calidus is in charge of the Jehar. He leads his men to kill the giants and herd them towards the other warriors until the battles are over but is left behind when Romar and Calidus enter the gateway in the cliff. He does not like the growing feeling of foreboding that he has. He has declared his loyalty to Nathair, even putting him before his own family.

After the Dal Gadrai escape the tunnel, Veradis finds Maquin but lets him go. Maquin tells him to think hard about which side he fights on. Veradis joins Nathair in Ardan, traveling with Jael part of the way to Isiltir. Once in Ardan, they travel with Owain to fight Rhin. After Cywen again tries to kill someone, Veradis is ordered to guard her and he begins to have feelings for her. But when Owain is killed, Veradis goes with Rhin's warriors to take Domhain while Cywen is taken to Murias with Nathair. Thanks to Veradis' shield wall, Rhin is able to conquer Domhain but Veradis' friend Bos is killed. He has a quick run in with Corban during the campaign, he wishes he had the chance to speak to Corban and to ask him questions. He wants to decide for himself if Corban is the Black Sun.

Son of Evnis and Fain. Guard of Edana, rightful Queen of Ardan. Boyfriend of the late Bethan. Friend of Rafe.

Evnis is a friend of Rafe and Crain but never seems much interested in bullying the other boys and even tries to get Rafe to lay off sometimes. During the hunt in which Storm's mother is killed, he is drug off and pinned under his horse. He breaks his arm and develops a fever but is eventually nursed back to health by Brina. He declares a vendetta against Storm and Corban because of it. His father wants to marry him off to Edana but he is in love with Dath's sister Bethan. Evnis refuses to allow them to marry though. When the fortress gates are breached and Bethan killed, he holds her dead body along with her father. When Mordwyr is convinced to flee, Vonn follows along. He tells the others that his father does know abou the secret tunnel but he's not sure if anyone else does. He declares loyalty to Ardan, saying that he did not know anything of his father's plans. He escapes through the tunnel with Corban's group and is allowed to stay but will be watched closely.

Travels with Edana's group to Domhain, but slowly starts to lose faith in humanity and become more cynical, distancing himself from the others at times. The group finds out that he stole his father's book, a book that Brina and Heb then use to teach Corban about elemental magic. When Edana is forced to flee Domhain, he goes with her. There is a fight at the boat, Vonn pulls Camlin on board before the ship sails but they are forced to leave Halion and Marrock behind. 

Son of Gramm. When the Hundred come to Gramm's home to collect their horses, Wulf gives Tukul an axe as a parting gift. 

Huge hound belonging to Thannon and Corban's family. 

When Brenin's fortress is attacked by Owain and Nathair, Thannon fights his way toward Brenin with Buddai by his side. They face Rauca and the shield-wall together, but both of them fall before it. 

Cywen finds Buddai alive and guarding her father's body. She takes him home and Buddai becomes her constant companion. He accompanies her to Murias but outside of Murias, he runs into the woods and does not return to Cywen. He had found Storm and traveled with Corban's group into Murias to rescue Cywen. Reunited, he leaves with both Corban and Cywen. 

Crow who is loyal to Brina and capable of some speech, a shadow of an ability animals had before the Scourging. He escapes the fortress with Brina and Corban when it is attacked. 

He scouts for Edana's group several times on the way to Domhain and then on their way to Murias. They are able to find and rescue Corban from Rhin's stronghold thanks to Craf's help.

Raven originally attached to Nemain, Queen of the Benothi giants. Nemain sends Fech with Uthas to scout (and spy) and Fech sees Uthas speak to Rhin in the fire. Uthas tries to kill Fech, but the bird is found by Brina and becomes attached to Edana. When Edana is forced to flee Domhain, she sends Fech to tell Corban what is happening. Fech sees Uthas kill Nemain and agrees to lead Corban and Meical to the cauldron room, as long as they can kill Uthas. 

Horse given to Corban to raise and to train. At one point when Vonn, Rafe, and Helfach are antagonizing Corban, Helfach allows his hunting dog to attack Corban. Shield kills the dog and saves Corban's life, which is how he got his name. Corban uses Shield during his Warrior's Trial, needing to show that he can perform a running mount, and Shield accompanies him during his Long Night, allowing Corban to run ahead of Owain's warriors when they arrive to lay siege. 

Cywen tries to keep Shield with him, though she is forced to let Drust use Shield at one point. She rides Shield to Cambren and then to Murias, he saves her life inside of Murias when she is nearly killed by a wyrm. They are finally reunited with Corban and Storm, leaving Murias together. 

Wolven from the Baglun Forest who was saved by Corban when her pack and littermates were killed by warriors. Allowed to stay and be trained by Corban by the Queen's Justice but her presence is not well accepted by most warriors. When she attacks Rafe to protect Corban, she is banished to the Baglun Forest for her own protection but she follows Brenin's entourage throught the Darkwood to Narvon. When Alona, Edana, and Cywen are kidnapped inside the forest, Corban uses Storm to track the kidnapped women and eventually rescue them. Afterward, Corban decides that they will not be separated again. He fights a duel with Rafe and wins, putting the matter to bed, but when the gates are breached Rafe and his father try to kill Corban. Storm comes to his defense and kills Helfach, Rafe's father. She escapes through the secret tunnel with Corban's group.

She travels with Corban to Domhain, then to Murias where they are reunited with Buddai and Shield. She fights with Corban's group several times.

When men first returned to the Banished Lands, Cambros was sent to fight the Benothi giants with his sons Cadlas and Ard. After dispelling the giants, Cambros split the land between himself and his sons. This is how Ardan got its name. 

Brother to Skald. He murdered his brother Skald in the first murder, leading to the Scourging by Elyon. 

King of the giants from before the Scourging. Husband of Nemain. His brother Dagda killed him in the first murder, leading to the Scourging by Elyon. 

Two born of blood, dust, and ashes shall champion the Choices, the Darkness and Light.

Was once a woodsman inside the Darkwood. Personal guard of Princess Edana, rightful Queen of Ardan.

Is sent on a mission by Braith to kill Dylan's family, leading to women and children dying, which Camlin is not okay with. During that mission, he is captured by Brenin's forces, but is rescued by Braith before he is properly questioned or tried. He is part of the group that captures Alona, Edana, and Cywen, but he later fights with the men from Ardan to protect the women. He leads them through the woods back to the giantway where they join the rest of the people from Ardan. Camlin never leaves the group and becomes one of Ardan's huntsmen - becoming friends with Marrock and Tarben. When Brenin is threatened during the takeover by Owain and Nathair, Camlin shoots the soldier in the neck but it does not save the king, who is later killed. Camlin escapes out of the secret tunnel with Corban's group.

Camlin travels with Edana, becoming a trusted member of her guard and being instrumental in the groups survival several times. He fights with Domhain's forces on Edana's behalf and when Edana must flee, he goes with her. But he gives Rath an idea so that Domhain can fight the shield wall more effectively. Once they flee the keep, he fights with Edana's forces, trying to save the Domhain Prince's life. When Conall and Braith follow them, Camlin faces off against Braith and kills him. Camlin is injured in the process but Baird pushes him toward Edana's ship and Camlin is able to get on board with Vonn's help. Halion and Marrock are not as lucky.
