Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas

Here we are, the last book in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas. It has not always been a smooth road but it was enjoyable regardless. The series is a favorite of many fantasy readers and while I'm not sure it's my favorite, it was excellent. Heavy in political politicking, this book is the culmination of everything that has come before. It deals with body horror, torture, death, slavery, blood, grief, murder, pregnancy, fire, colonization, and war.
Aelin's friends have been scattered to the furthest corners of the continent - and some of them even further! And Aelin herself has been captured. Her captors want her to yield to them, give them the information they're looking for and put on a collar, but Aelin is holding out for as long as she can. If she gives in, it would doom not only her own county and people, but everyone in Erilea, possibly everyone in the world. Can her friends come together in time to fight the huge armies of their enemies? Can they make a stand without Aelin's help? Can they rescue her from her captors? Aelin wonders if they're even looking.
This book was excellent. One of the few books series that seems to wrap up all the loose ends, at least all the ones that I can think of. Sarah J Maas charter her course starting from book one and everything comes together in the most satisfying way in Kingdom of Ash. The writing was great, the plotting was superb. The characters were in depth and likeable, each with a very unique personality, which is hard to do with such a large ensemble of characters. Kingdom of Ash moved me to tears more than once, and considering it was such a long book (nearly one thousand pages), it kept the plot moving and it never felt like I was slogging through mud.
I'm giving Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas 4.75 stars out of 5. It was not my favorite book in the series, that honor goes to Tower of Dawn, but it was a great book and an excellent series. If you have been toying with the idea of plunging in, I would do it. But I would not read the novellas first. Follow the author's preferred reading order, you can find it on our Throne of Glass series page.

Pairs well with oatmeal bread and bringing down your enemies, every last one of them.
