The Hurricane Wars Study Guide

Shadowforged. Master of the Shadowforged Legion. Night Emperor of Kesath. Son of Gaheris and Sancia. Husband of Talasyn. 

His mother fled Kesath and left Alaric with his father when he was a teenager. His father punishes him whenever Alaric disappoints him, which is often, and the punishments are sometimes verbal and sometimes physical - to the point that he cannot walk. He receives a missive from Coxswain Darius that tells Alaric that the Lightweaver is sneaking into Nenavar to commune with the Light Sever, he moves to intercept Talasyn and they are both captured by the Nenavarene but then escape. He takes a moth coracle from Nenavar back to Kesath and they are able to reverse engineer some of Nenavar's Voidfell technology. After Kesath conquers the Allfold, Gaheris steps down and Alaric becomes Night Emperor, although it is in name only since his father still calls the shots. He travels to Nenavar and becomes engaged to Talasyn, their Lachis'ka. He agrees to train her so they can guard against the Voidfell eruption that happens on the Dark Night when all seven moons are eclipsed. Begins to have feelings for Talasyn before he starts training her, which grow exponentially when he is near her all the time. The two are married and Alaric returns to Kesath before Talasyn comes to be coronated. He offers to look for Khaede in Kesath for Talasyn. When he arrives back in Kesath, he finds out that Mathire has brought Gaheris a sariman and that Gaheris has aspirations of taking over the world. Can create a barrier by combining his Shadowforged magic with Talasyn's Lightweaver magic. 

General in the Sardovian armed forces. 

Brings news of a Light Sever on Nenavar to Vela and Tarasyn's attention. He is in charge of the Allfold's armed forces when Vela is injured.

Coxswain in the Sardovian armed forces who defected with Ideth Vela from Kesath. 

When Kesath takes Lasthaven, he defects back to the Night Emperor - alerting them to Talasyn's name and her mission to commune with Nenavar's Light Sever.

Prince of Nenavar. Father of Talasyn. Husband of Hanan and younger son of Urduja. 

Met Hanan when his ship crashed on her island, they fell in love and she came back to Nenavar with him to be married. Killed his brother Sintan during the civil war, helping to bring it to its end. When civil war broke out and Talasyn was evacuated but did not return to Nenavar, he searched for her but could not find her. Has embraced Talasyn with both hands but does not go against the Zahiya-Lachis. 

Regent of Kesath. Father of Alaric, husband of Sancia (who abandoned him), and son of Ozalus. 

When his father died during Sunstead's attack, Gaheris destroyed Sunstead and killed their Lightweavers - making himself Night Emperor. He then waged war against the rest of the continent of Lir until the Sardovian Allfold was defeated and he ruled the entire continent. At that point he stepped down, becoming regent to Alaric's Night Emperor, but Alaric rules in name only. Gaheris has vowed to conquer Nenavar next.

Lightweaver. Wife of Elagbi and mother of Talasyn. 

Originally from the Dawn Isle but came to Nenavar after meeting Elagbi and they were married. She refused to be named Urduja's heir, causing tension in Nenavar. When she sent a flotilla of ships to aid Sunstead's Lightweavers, the ships were destroyed and Nenavar devolved into civil war. Hanan died from a sudden, quick illness before Talasyn and Urduja were evacuated from Nenavar.

Shadowforged. The Amirante, the person in charge, of Sardovia's armed forces. 

She trains Talasyn as a Lightweaver as best as she can. After Lasthaven falls, she travels with Talasyn to Nenavar to ask them fro refuge. She reminds Talasyn of the power she wields as Lachis'ka of Nenavar and future Night Empress of Kesath. She is currently with what remains of the Sardovian fleet, hiding on Sigwad in Nenavar's strait.

Shadowforged. Legionnaire. Twin to Nisene. One of Alaric's most trusted allies.

Daya of Ahimsa.

Is instrumental in Nenavar's creation of technology using the Voidfell. Helps Talasyn and Alaric train with their barrier. 

Talasyn's Lady in Waiting.

Rajan of Katau. In favor of Nenavar continuing to live as they have and staying out of international politics. Not a fan of outsiders but staunchly believes in the will of the ancestors.

Part of the marriage negotiations between Nenavar and Kesath, mostly present to act as a counterweight since he is not in favor of marrying the Lachis'ka off to their enemy. 

Helmsman in the Sardovian armed forces originally from the Coast. Married to Sol. Friend of Talasyn. 

Her husband Sol is killed on the day of their wedding during an attack by Kesath, leaving her two months pregnant. She tells Talasyn about the Fisherman's Warning, a legend on the Coast of a lavender colored glow that comes from Nenavar's direction that Talasyn later discovers is caused by the Voidfell. During Kesath's attack on Lasthaven, Khaede goes missing.

One of Urduja's staunchest allies and chief negotiator during the marriage negotiations between Kesath and Nenavar.

Commodore in Kesath's armed forces. Accompanies Alaric to Nenavar and assists in the marriage negotiations between Alaric and Talasyn. Helps to perform the sweep of the islands looking for the Sardovian ships. Brings a sariman back to Kesath. 

Daya of Catanduc. 

Acts as envoy to the Kesathese fleet when they first arrive, offering marriage to their Lachis'ka. She takes part in the marriage negotiations.

Shadowforged. Father of Gaheris and grandfather of Alaric. King of Kesath who was killed by Sunstead during the Cataclysm.

WIfe of Gaheris, mother of Alaric. 

Originally from Valisa. She protected Alaric during Sunstead's attack on the Kesath. But when Gaheris inherited his father's throne and slowly changed, she chose to flee Kesath when Alaric was thirteen. She tried to take Alaric with her, but he refused to go. He has not heard from her since she left.

Part of the mission that searches Nenavar's island for the Sardovian fleet. He gives Alaric advice on how to talk to Talasyn. 

Prince of Nenavar and Urduja's elder son. When Hanan sent a flotilla to assist the Lightweavers of Sunstead, Nenavar dissolved into civil war. Sintan used the civil war to his own advantage and nearly destroyed the Nenavar Dominion before he was killed by Elagbi.

Sardovian Helmsman. Khaede's husband and father of her unborn child who dies on the day they are married in an attack by Kesath.

Nephew of Lueve Ramsey and close friend of Niamha Langsoune (possibly more). A critic of Nenavar's isolationism, urged the Dominion to fight with the Allfold against Kesath.

Arrives back in Nenavar after an extended time away to find Alaric and Talasyn engaged to be married. He is a staunch detractor of Kesath and challenges Alaric to a duel. Alaric wins, but Talasyn stops him from killing Surakwel. Talasyn tells Surakwel where the Sardovian fleet is hiding so he will sneak her there so she can speak to Vela. Surakwel will be leaving Nenavar again, but will be present for the wedding since his mother is too ill to attend. 

Lightweaver. Lachis'ka (heir) of Nenavar. Night Empress of Kesath. Her birth name is Alunsina Ivralis. Daughter of Elagbi Silim and Hanan Ivralis. Grandaughter of Urduja Silim. Was a helmsman of a Sardovian coracle.

Talasyn was born in Nenavar and when civil war broke out, she was evacuated. She was supposed to go to the Dawn Isles but ended up abandoned in Sardovia instead. She did not know who she was or who her parents were, growing up in an orphanage until she started living on the street at ten years old. Kesath attacked her town when she was fifteen and she survived by having her Lightweaver powers awaken. She was discovered by Coxswain Darius and trained by Vela. She is sent to Nenavar to commune with the Light Sever but is stopped by Alaric and captured by Nenavar, causing her to find out who her family is. After Kesath conquers the Allfold, she convinces the Zahiya-Lachis of Nenavar (her grandmother) to hide what remains of the Sardovian fleet. When Alaric comes to Nenavar, they become betrothed and he agrees to help her guard everyone from the Voidfell Sever eruption. Alaric trains her and helps her to commune with the Light Sever the first time. The two begin to have feelings for each other, and then they are married. She is torn up because she knows she will betray him to help return the Sardovian Allfold to the continent. Can create a barrier by combining her Lightweaver magic with Alaric's Shadowforged magic. 

Zahiya-Lachis (Queen) of Nenavar, Her Starlit Majesty, She Who Hung the Earth Upon the Waters. Mother of Elagbi and the late Sintan. Grandmother of Talasyn.

Urduja plans ten steps ahead and agrees to shelter what remains of the Sardovian fleet on Sigwad in exchange for Talasyn returning to Nenavar as the Lachis'ka. She had thought Kesath might threaten Nenavar and prepared to offer marriage to Talasyn instead of allowing Kesath to attack. Once the offer has been accepted, she reveals that the Void Sever is set to erupt in four months time and will kill everything it touches. They expect it to cover the entire continent with this eruption. Alaric and Talasyn both agree to work together to create a barrier to stop the Void Sever's eruption. 

Nenavar Kaptan of patrol divisions who finds Alaric and Talasyn fighting after they enter Nenavar illegally, Talasyn to commune with the Light Sever and Alaric to kill Talasyn. He recognizes Talasyn because she resembles her mother.

Bird native to Nenavar that can nullify an aethermancer's ability. 

Small primate native to Nenavar that is able to disappear when startled. When they disappear, they travel into a small pocket between dimensions.

The beginning of The Hurricane Wars, Sunstead attacked Kesath and killed King Ozalus. In retaliation, Gaheris destroyed Sunstead and killed all of their Lightweavers. The Allfold says that Sunstead gave warning before they attacked Kesath, trying to destroy the stormship prototype that terrified them. Kesath says that Sunstead attacked unprovoked and without warning to steal the stormship technology that they wanted for themselves. 

When all seven moons are in eclipse, the Void Sever erupts and kills everything it touches. It only happens once every thousand years or so, but the area it affects gets larger every time. The next eruption is in a matter of months and is expected to cover all of Nenavar as well as the entire continent that Kesath just conquered.

Country who created stormships and was attacked by Sunstead. They retaliated and destroyed Sunstead and the Lightweavers who lived there. They want to eradicate all Lightweavers. When their aether heart mines began to dry up, they attacked the Sardovian Allfold and eventually conquered the whole continent. Their emblem is a chimera.

Ozalus Ossinast - Kesathese King who was killed in Sunstead's attack.

Gaheris Ossinast - King who adopted the name the Night Emperor and declared war on the Lightweavers and the Sardovian Allfold. Currently regent of the Night Empire.

Alaric Ossinast - Current Night Emperor, although it is in name only.

Very secretive country consisting of many small islands. Capital - Eskaya. Does not permit aethermancers to live within its borders since channeling aether is a threat to the ruling house. A matrilineal country, the crown passes to the Queen's eldest daughter, or eldest daughter-in-law if she has no daughters of her own. Their emblem is a dragon.
