The first novella in The Powerless Trilogy takes place during the events of Powerless. It is a #1 New York Times Bestseller and a short read that allows you to delve into one of the secondary, important, but not showcased characters in Powerless. It deals with death, child abuse, blood, kidnapping, grief, murder, sexual harassment, injury, and classism. This is a review of Powerful, if you are looking for a summary or study guide for the books in The Powerless Trilogy, please check out our summary page here.

Adena has relied on Paedyn ever since they met a few years ago. Adena would sew and sell the things she made but whatever they needed that Adena's sales would not cover, Paedyn would steal for them. That included fabric for Adena's work. Now, faced with stealing or starving, Adena decides to do what she must to survive. She's so bad at it that she's immediately caught and is only saved from the whipping block by a stranger with a face of dreams and the attitude of nightmares. But he comes with a proposition for her. Help him get into the palace so that he can say goodbye to one of Pae's fellow contestants. In exchange, Adena will be able to see Paedyn and he will make sure that Adena eats.

This novella was surprisingly emotional for me. I think because I knew what was coming, I had to take a break at the end before finishing. The book was not phenomenal. It was nice to get to know Adena a little better, and I think Mack will be an exciting character. It was very fast paced but I don't think it detracted from the story very much. My biggest issue is the narrators, who were not very good and I had a hard time with. Overall, I don't have anything to complain about and it's a nice little accompanying story to the main books, but it was nothing I couldn't have lived without either.

I'm giving Powerful by Lauren Roberts 4.25 stars out of 5. Again, it bummed me out a surprising amount at the end but the rest of it was fine.
