Fearless is the final full length novel in Lauren Roberts' Powerless trilogy, although it also contains two novellas including Fearful which takes place just after Fearless. It is an Amazon Editors' Pick for Best Romance and brings Paedyn Gray's story to a close. It deals with references of child abuse and child death, mental illness, grief, murder, fire resulting in injury, death, and terminal illness. This review will have some spoilers for the previous books in the series so read with caution. After killing the previous King of Ilya and running from his son, the current King of Ilya, Paedyn has been captured and returned to the kingdom at the hands of Ilya's Enforcer, Kai Azer. Not knowing what to expect when they return to Ilya, Kai struggles between his duty to his brother the king and to his country and his love for Paedyn. Imagine the surprise of both Paedyn and Kai when they return to Ilya not to a death or prison sentence for Pae, but a proposal of marriage that she does not have the option to refuse. Now Paedyn must find a way to win the hearts of the Elites who see her as weak and expendable, as well as forge a path for the rest of the Ordinaries to return to life in Ilya, all to save the growing kingdom from itself.
After the second book in the series, Reckless, I was not looking forward to this book. I had not been a big fan, finding Reckless redundant and a bit boring, and the beginning of Fearless really didn't catch me like I needed it too. However, a few chapters in, I was back in it after a fun twist I didn't see coming. I was excited and ready to see where the story took me, but was ultimately disappointed by the trajectory of this novel and the series as a whole. There is so much in this book, and the series in general, that seems like it will be important but ends up being superfluous. Several characters, events, and even full chapters were unnecessary fluff. I still thought the setting and magic system were very interesting but was so frustrated of where the plot went, particularly with Kitt and Mak. There were a few heartwarming moments that I enjoyed between Kai and Pae, and ultimately I didn't dislike their ending. But overall, the story feels like the author didn't have the time to really do everything she wanted to do. It felt like she was setting up events that she couldn't fit into the story either because of space or time restraints. It could have been a much richer story but it just falls flat. And the epilogue is just bonkers - I am not looking forward to the final novella Fearful.
I'm giving Fearless by Lauren Roberts 3 stars out of 5. This book and the series as a whole was very meh for me. If you enjoy an intricate story that doesn't feel convoluted, this is not the series for you - however I think younger people who are just being introduced to fantasy may enjoy it.
